Google Chrome has built-in ad blocking?

Who knew, right?  I'm not sure if there was some sort of Chrome hooks in there for that or something.

Microsoft just released preview versions of its Chromium-powered Edge browser today. If you’ve downloaded it to test it, you’ve probably noticed it’s very stable and performs surprisingly well. It even performs better than Google’s own Chrome browser on Windows 10, despite being built on the same Chromium open-source project. While it’s early days for Microsoft’s new Edge, the company has revealed all of the Google services it has replaced or removed from its new Chromium-powered browser to optimize performance.

Microsoft has removed or replaced more than 50 of Google’s services that come as part of Chromium, including things like ad blocking, Google Now, Google Cloud Messaging, and Chrome OS-related services.

More at link: https://www.theverge...hromium-edge-browser

I'm actually looking forward to trying it out.  I haven't been able to get past the middle-click problem in Brave, and Vivaldi seems to be slower than it used to be, so I'm back to Chrome.

Yeah. The site was working for me yesterday. But today I actually tried to use it and it failed. :(

Actually, I just tried again and it seems to be working for me now.

When it is working, Malwarebytes prevents me from going to it with a Trojan warning.

That sounded really cool, but I am not able to get to transfer.sh, it seems to be down :-(

I noticed that yesterday and went right to the github.  That address worked.

The best tool is a Premium membership...  :(

https://www.youtube.com/premium

I have a membership, and I can say that the best tool isn't a premium membership.  I download videos even though I have a membership because of this stipulation:

Download videos and music on your mobile devices to watch and listen offline for up to 30 days without being connected to the internet. For more details on how to download videos and music, please see this Help Center article.

I don't download normal music that way- but unique things that could disappear and are not available elsewhere?  Yeah, I download those all the time.

I created something like that using Nancy for the company that I work for- it's nice to see an alternate implementation.  I use SyncThing and Synology Cloud Station, but it's nice to have a simple service where you can just perform a put then a get to retrieve it sometimes- especially hitting it using cUrl or something similar.

Specifically, in case he was being too obtuse, this in the code.

Code: PHP [Select]
  1. Prerequisites:
  2.   * PHP
  3.   * GeoIP as described here: http://php.net/manual/en/geoip.requirements.php

Though I wouldn't disagree that a bit of obtuseness was perhaps warranted in this case.

I used to use MachForm for this.  The pricing was pretty straightforward, and having the code was a plus.  It's strictly a form submission type of deal though.  The form builder is pretty straightforward, and easy to use.

So are you saying that you want a contextual keymap based on the application that is foregrounded?

No, I don't think so.  He wants to automate, with a hotkey, the "right-click > choose some context menu action" one does after, typically, selecting files.

@MourningStar: Because right-click shell stuff like this is quite tricky to automate, you might want to look at Cautomaton, released by Worstje, one of the coders here on DC.

Cautomaton DC forum page here: https://www.donation....msg223716#msg223716

Worstje's site here: http://www.dcmembers...whitehat/cautomaton/

Ah Ok.  Thanks for the clarification.  I was asking because I know that the Logitech is on a per-application basis (one of the reasons that I use it) and I know that particular screen that he capped changes based on the application that's foregrounded (because I use the same thing on my g13 to change the key assignments per application).  But it seems like you have a handle on it so I'll bow out. Onward!

This is probably the most painful bug report I've ever read, describing in glorious technicolor the steps leading to Knight Capital's $465m trading loss due to a software bug that struck late last year, effectively bankrupting the company.

The tale has all the hallmarks of technical debt in a huge, unmaintained, bitrotten codebase (the bug itself due to code that hadn't been used for 8 years), and a really poor, undisciplined devops story.

Read more here.

In the meantime I decided to try out one of the free providers, though I'm a little hesitant to put much data on one of these free providers because I'm not sure what kind of security they use by default. Does anyone know if Nextcloud uses end-to-end encryption by default? I don't want the free provider to have access to my data.

I am not sure, and it was one of the reasons that I haven't checked more deeply into it.  I can upgrade to the version of PHP, but the space requirement is what keeps me from hosting my own.

What's the point of a 3-color display?

Why not get a real display for around the same price, such as the ones found here?

https://www.hardkern...ct-category/display/

The fact that it's e-ink instead of LCD.  Different tech.  They have LCD screens on that site also.

I'm thinking about tackling this.  Of course, I have so many projects in flight right now, not sure when that will be...  :-[

What actually happens? Nothing? You might want to right click the executable, look at properties, and see if it is blocked if so.

^Nailed It!

(Ultimate Corporate Cloud Control) Anything can be taken away at anytime for any reason … But the consumer can keep on a payin', because it's all being done - by the mothership - "for their own good"...

That's the reason that the tech behind shadow appeals to me more.  I have a machine that I can game on, but I don't have to use that machine.  Of course, most people don't think that way...

Any alternate service suggestions?
From what I've seen so far, imgur seems to work alright most of the time and doesn't ask for money.
-ConstanceJill (March 19, 2019, 11:15 AM)

It is possible for us to have different experiences. Maybe Imgur is running a test to see if it drives revenue. You may shortly find yourself in the same position, so it is best to explore the alternatives now.

Edit:
It turns out that my problem was that I supplied credentials for my account. If you note my first post with the issue, mouser verified the problem. In a later post he noted that the problem disappeared. The key is not to log in.

To clarify what ConstanceJill was saying, imgur is a different service than imageshack.  You were asking for alternatives, and she was suggesting imgur.com as an alternative to imageshack.com.

Yep, we just keep plugging along.

I suppose for some its an outlet, but for the rest its just circuitous...

As long as the posts are positive, and not negative, I'm happy to continue.

Well, hopefully none reverse the polarity of the thread.

For that, where do I need to sine the petition?

Let me reach out to my contacts, and I'll get back to you.

I think it'll require a three-pronged approach to cover the ground.
-cranioscopical (March 14, 2019, 01:56 PM)

But after that you'll feel transform...er, converted.

What on earth do you mean?

-cranioscopical (March 15, 2019, 03:07 PM)

I'm not certain he has the capacity to trace that line of questioning.

Maybe we should take a pole?  Find out if in this cycle there will be any power in the conversation?
