Living Room / Spokeo - new stalking social networking site?
« Last post by justice on March 24, 2008, 06:18 AM »
I received the following concerning email today from Spokeo, a site that collects user information from many social websites including picasa, flickr, myspace etc and uses this data to reconstruct friends so you can stay up to date with what they're doing. They stress they only use public available information, i.e. information you can find if you know all the user accounts from certain people and visited the websites individually. However the organisation and collection of this data is automatic and there does not seem to be a way to prevent this from happening. I got the following email (I had never heard of spokeo before this):

As a courtesy, we are notifying you that Spokeo users have found the following accounts for you:

     <account removed> on Flickr
    <account removed> on Digg
     <account removed> on imeem
     <account removed> on Picasa
     <account removed> on Pandora
     <account removed> on Stumbleupon
     <account removed> on Multiply
     <account removed> on iLike

The thing is that many of these accounts have different usernames and personal information, the only way that I can see that hey are connected is via e-mail address. I have not looked into finding other people but if this information is available to them then it makes it extremely easy to hack someone's online life if you somehow retrieve a password to one of these sites (security breach or easy guess). Spokeo also  encourages you (although you don't have to) to register using your gmail / aim / yahoo login details, meaning that your google checkout information could now be linked in to all this.

To retrieve this information manually would require a very determined person to work for at least a couple of hours.. Do you manage your privacy settings on all the services you have ever tried out? Picasa for example implemented privacy options at a later stage - so it's likely that some information can be found. Thanks to spokeo I have now deleted accounts on many of the services it found.

Find your friends. Track your friends. But it's not opt-in, there is not even an opt-out. The meta gathering process in my opinion requires additional privacy controls. Is this allowed by Law?

Am I the only one that finds this very worrying. As far as I can see in the hands of the wrong people this could cause major problems. I'm waiting on a response from spokeo.

Sorry I was also being silly, i just wanted to bring to the attention to Sheer Novelty (great name by the way) that Microsoft has thought along similar lines and added the information to the copy dialogue. Just in case they were not aware. :) Jpgaiva it displays for all copy operations however it's initally hidden until you click on "More Information"

Living Room / Re: A new paradigm as the ultimate defense
« Last post by justice on March 20, 2008, 07:25 AM »
By now you should get the idea: the IMGolden PC is a Linux Based PC with no hard drive. When you start it up it boots a version of Ubuntu Linux that's stored in a non-volatile memory module. It's kind of like running Ubuntu from a Live CD except that the Live CD is actually in permanent memory. As is the case with a Live CD, there are a whole bunch of programs pre-installed and ready to use, including Open Office and Firefox.

It's a clever idea with some immediate advantages. Every time you boot the PC it comes up in exactly the same state as the last time you booted it. Indeed, in exactly the same state it left the factory. And of course the operating system running from memory is much faster than running from a CD.

As there is no hard disk, there is nowhere for malware to hide. Any infection resident in normal memory (RAM) is destroyed when you power the machine off.
tada ;)

If you are running as a restricted user / vista then it probably doesn't have permissions to create files in the folder you installed in and Barnacle needs to do that to function correctly. If you are running barnacle from a folder within program files then these restrictions apply. Try moving Barnacle to a folder such as C:\utils\barnacle and try and  run it. If this fails and you're in vista try right clicking the shortcut / exe file and run as administrator once.

What are the alternatives? I can think of a few but surely the people who implement captcha must have thought of them too?
The problem with any alternatives that if they're used that is rolled out of millions of people then it's very difficult. On your personal site you can stop spam by asking what color grass is, but as soon as yahoo does that then it's worth for people to automate it. I guess if OpenId was more userfriendly then it would be worth using that instead. or Cardspace.

Yep I'm using office 2007 / vista in the work place although most of the workplace is and will be on 2003 / xp for at least another year.

I would really like the interface if there was also a search tool built in that would search through all options. It was there in the betas but then removed as research found that people didn't need it. But the help is extremely good so I can always find what I want through that. Apart from that, and the fact that office is getting more resource intensive (not a problem on modern pcs that are supposed to run vista/office 2007) it works really well and especially Outlook 2007 is very much improved and an excellent tool.

Desktop apps will come back as soon as they learned their lessons from web apps.
Instant gratification of web-apps will hopefully encourage desktop apps to come to the point without installation, splash screen, registration code, welcome box, preference setting, file management, menu systems, context menu crapification. Maybe they'll become task based and maybe even the os will become task-group based to facilitate the software ecosystem instead of just providing for the helper tools. Windows Server's role-based framework I'm looking at you. Jees I need a break lol.
1090
I'd love to run an alternative desktop OS to Windows, because I believe things can be a lot better. Whenever someone says linux is ready for then masses I'm excited, but then I read about things like stopping audio stuttering and jerky video; and fixing hibernate and suspend and the lack of commercial ecosystem for multimedia and design software that I'd like to see. And every year is the year of linux for the desktop, but last year the most media-profilic person that created desktop orientated patches stopped working on it.

So I'm hoping for a new competitor, maybe desktop bsd or yahoo will come with a desktop os that keeps the person in mind. (beos) Windows works for a lot of people because they learned how to sidestep many issues. Everyday I depend on software to make the desktop experience less flawed (farr, arsclip, roboform, clickoff, foldershare, anti virus, anti spyware, logmein etc) and i guess it's a bit grating. it certainly motivated me to become involved in IT, it's really bad (on windows) and it's really hard to make a program/website that's as effortless to use as your tv. Perhaps better middleware is now coming available (.net etc, I'm not aware of competiting technologies on OSX or linux except for similar implementations like mono).

Yep wonder how they add in all those inclusions / exclusions, add in a general one for authotkey then exclude all the false positives reported by checksum? Wonder how it works, it would mean that if I change a line in my AHK file and recompile it then it would show false positives again..

General Software Discussion / shoutcast / icecast host recommendations
« Last post by justice on March 10, 2008, 08:39 AM »
Anyone got recommendations /experience for a shoutcast hosting? Prices seem to be rather steep, so perhaps it's a good role for a server you got lying around spare ;) Can find plenty of opinions on website hosting but nothing on shoutcast / icecast.

If it's a small project you can look at something like BeanStalk. Or if you're adventurous try something like JungleDisk and a subversion repository on the webdrive.

alternatively if you don't mind uploading a small textfile to your server, try http://uptime.openacs.org/ its more bare bones but its free it seems. testing this too.

I just found this website: http://host-tracker.com/ if you want to get reports you can sign up for a free 30 day trial, after which it will revert to the free version. For two or less servers and weekly reports its free see http://host-tracker.com/order-page/ seems alright to check server performance but for uptime notification you need to sign up to one of the price plan.

Try vVsta, it can stop and start device drivers and most updates without requiring a restart. It's really a lot better. :)
If you're stuck with XP, try net stop "Automatic Updates" and continue working until you want to restart.
