Living Room / Re: Am I the only one who finds the new Apps-based world boring?
« Last post by Target on September 29, 2010, 06:37 PM »
There are many types of computer user, but there are two key ones for this issue; the content producer and the content consumer. The producers will always need a laptop or desktop, you really can't even write blog posts properly on an iPad, never mind a smart phone. Consumers only need internet and a touchscreen. The new 'app' revolution is aimed at the consumers, and that makes perfect sense, the vast vast vast majority of people are consumers only.

this is it in a nutshell - the idea that appliances like ipads or 'smart' phones provide anything like portable computing is patently ridiculous.

These things are largely gimick, and they are only successful where the end user doesn't require a portable computing solution.

Sending emails, (inane) tweets, playing (lame) games, watching video. listening to music, reading documents, browsing, or updating facebook do not (IMHO) qualify as computing - try running a big spreadsheet or database, or drafting a substantial document, or coding and see how far you get (or how long your patience holds out)

You could probably draw a parallel with consoles - I've never been a fan, but I know several ordinary households that have versions of ALL the available platforms, apparently because each offers something the others don't (though a single PC could provide all of them and then some...)

looks like your case has connectors for some sort of 'surround sound', ie Front LEFT/RIGHT, rear LEFT/RIGHT

My take would be as follows (but don't quote me)

  • MIC IN/GND - MIC2_L/AGND
  • MIC POWER - MIC2_R/NC
  • LINEOUT FR/RR - LINEOUT_R/NC
  • LINEOUT FL/RL - LINEOUT_L/NC

I can't see the cabling from your pictures so I don't know whether all the connectors are wired, or for that matter the wire colours so while it shouldn't matter if you cross them over I'd check first in case there's something peculiar to your board/case

Living Room / Re: Does Flash or java make websites suck?
« Last post by Target on September 12, 2010, 06:11 PM »
I think lack of information/organization is a problem at most sites.
Yes, I agree that this is a problem on many sites, but I was focusing on sites where Flash and/or java were a large part of the problem, and all too many high falutin' restaurant sites seem to be good examples.

e.g. The local Dominoes Pizza site is all Flash... And unusable. You have to enter credit card information BEFORE you can see the menu... Ahem... Idiocy piled upon idiocy.

And... to top it all off... the front page now plays a loud video right off the bat...

try acessing these sights on dialup - I understand that broadband is almost de-facto, but if I have to wait 10 minutes for every page to load (or even worse, a banner to load before I can even enter a site), I'm gone and they've lost my business.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but any of the web learning I've done emphasised that you should consider your audience (ALL of them).  Sadly this does't seem to be a consideration these days...

FYI here are some alternatives to the pensuites you've already quoted

I've used both Lupo and WinPenPack, but the others I googled.

There are others, but no doubt you can do the search as well as I can

The trouble with these things is that they are all somebody elses collection, so while there will always be some overlap, there will also be a lot of stuff that you don't want

I would use portable apps more but having to constantly update them can be a real pain in the butt

there are apps around that supposedly do this, though whether or not they would work in a portable environment I have no idea

but do you really need to constantly update?

Unless there's a requirement (ie AV tools), or there's a significant bug or functionality gap you shouldn't really need to, and if it's buggy or function poor then you'll probably be looking for a replacement instead of an update

FWIW I never use launcher.  YMMV, but most of the time the first thing I do is fire up the file manager of choice which gives me access to all the apps anyway - if I was really pushed I'd probably knock something up in AHK...

Target, I hear you.  But there are dozens of lists all over the place.  It's a lot of work and time to set up a USB stick.  If I did it the way described above, it would all be done using freeware apps and best of all, it uses the LBC as a launcher, and not some very specific portable launcher.  For example, the launcher that comes with portableapps is nowhere near as nice as LBC.  I don't know, it was just an idea.  I may do it just for the fun of it.  Maybe I won't....haha.

don't get me wrong, I wasn't trying to discourage you, just get around the potential issue of redistributing someone else's app's.

and you're right, there are lists all over the place - but they are lists of what suits the respective publishers.  What I was suggesting was collecting details of everyones must haves/favourites which could then be distilled down to a core set of apps, or that would at the very least provide a pick list of proven tools...

FWIW, some of the apps included in the Liberkey distro have .NET dependencies...

I wonder if people here would find it useful if I made a rar or iso file that contained my entire LBC setup in one download?

perhaps just a list of the included apps - these things (like anything) tend to be pretty personal so what's a must have for you may be of no interest/value to others (I've tried several different USB distro's and I invariably end up with a ton of apps that I'll never use but just can't bring myself to delete just in case...).

Actually there could be some value in collating a (definitive?) list of must have apps for a USB key - what say you?

This time next century you'll have cutting-edge internet access from last century  :P

now that we have a new government?  ;)

we're in a rural area (10k from town), and on a rim, so broadband is unlikely - nor do we have access to 3G radio.  We do get 2G, but it's not terribly reliable...

Tch, tch ,tch - haven't you been listening to all the moaning about the internet access, (or lack of).  :D

yeah, and with my bleeding edge dialup access I felt really bad for those poor unfortunates :'(

I moved to Melbourne last November. :) But I really do miss Korea... Especially restaurants and shopping there!

I have a vague recollection of you saying something about that, but you're profile still says Seoul...

Hope you're enjoying Oz!

Living Room / Re: Simple way to connect two computers (both XP) ?
« Last post by Target on August 17, 2010, 01:01 AM »
Assuming the XP defaults of DHCP & APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) both machines will self assign IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x network range when the cross-over cable is connected between them (time-outs being what they are, this tends to take a while 5-10min) This should work fine for your (quick-N-dirty) purposes.

I'd just set the IP's on the alternate config tab and you're done - as I understand it the machine will use DHCP, but if there's no DHCP server it will use the alternate IP's.  It doesn't sound like you ever use the machines on other networks so this should be an easy solution

simply substitute the returns in your ifwinactive statements for the send routine (and of course you'll need to amend the AHK classes as appropriate)

here we don't have the choices you probably do - and yeah, I suppose it is largely aesthetics

There are handsets available that don't include all the extra gewgaws, but they generally look like something you'd give you're toddler when they're teething...

but we digress...

Do *you* see a need for this? Can you explain what *you* would do if you could "build your own phone"? I can all but guarantee that a phone exists that does pretty much what you want.

well, given the option, I'd build a phone that doesn't look like a crappy childs toy, and doesn't try and incorporate every damn gadget and/or function known to man (that I've never used and probably never will), ie no radio, or media player, or camera, or net access, etc, etc etc
