Living Room / Re: Any MiniDisc people out there?
« Last post by brotherS on April 03, 2006, 02:46 PM »
I used to love MiniDiscs, I was the first one around here that bought one (got an additional mobile device later too), and back then (10 years ago?) it sure was great!

Now I'm only listening to the MDs I own, I don't record stuff to MD anymore. Since there are so many good (and cheap) mp3 players I doubt MDs will be able to attract lots of new users.

For those who never heard of this at all (you probably are out there): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc

That would be OK, but it seems a little silly to have a program running just to check if the system has been idle when windows already does that.
Not at all! :D

AutoHotkey is checking LOTS of things here all the time, it's very helpful.

You could use something like "If A_TimeIdlePhysical > 9000000" to do what you asked for, check http://www.autohotke...om/docs/Tutorial.htm and feel free to ask if you want to try it.

Try looking in the "Specials" section under Current Discounts, or a forum search on "PS Tray Factory". Works great.

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?

I use Website Watcher for my RSS feeds, because I haven't found anything that does it better (or rather, does it better without an insane memory load or huge executable files).
Here's what you need: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3015.0 :)

Freeware

avast! Home v4.6
BN rating: [4.6/5.0]
Pros: very low resource usage, very stable.  one of the only free AVs with x64 support.
Cons: slightly cluttered GUI.

Please where to download this version ? The url you typed lands on the version 4 download page and I can't find the 4.6 version you said . . .
Just click the URL that you quoted :D

Btw, I like this AV a lot!

I believe many are by now :)

Btw, I'd love if you'd include the BetaNews/FileForum ratings like LuckMan212 did on https://www.donation...66.new;topicseen#new

When asked if a phishing site was legit or a spoof, 23% of users use only the content of the website to make the decision! The majority of users ignore the address and SSL indicators in the browser. Some users think that favicons and lock icons in HTML are more important indicators.

Oh my...  :(

Thank you Moerl!
Great review, very complete. I was going to install it too, after reading this review. I only won't because of the "distraction" problem you mentioned
Nooo, don't let that scare you! He offered the solution as well:

imagine yourself actually trying to be productive, trying to complete work at your PC. With a more traditional newsreader like FeedDemon or Greatnews, you are in control of when you will read newsfeeds. With AlertBear, on the other hand, you will be interrupted at regular intervals, and not just with harmless popups from the tray, but with extremely potent distractors! They are newsfeed entries after all, and you know how efficient RSS can be at robbing you of your much valued time, right? Of course there is a mirror image to this "complaint", which really is no complaint at all. After all, this is a question of philosophy, not an actual deficiency in AlertBear itself. I can think of at least two ways to render this "problem" sterile. You can set the feed update time to something very high.. like one hour, two hours, or even more.. that way you will barely ever be interrupted by AlertBear, and its updates and stack slide-ins may even serve as a way to relax you at regular intervals. After an hour of work, you may even want to read a feed here or there, to take your mind off of what you're doing and learn something new.

I'm having trouble getting things done. ;)
Then you should read my post in https://www.donation...index.php?topic=2928 :)

Wow, great review!

The preferences tabs and all of its content should be self explanatory and do not demand further explanation, save for one exception: Bearkey. I have no idea what that is myself, so if anyone wants to add that in a later post in this thread, please do.
Bearkey seems to be an older, more wider approach that wasn't successful:

Bearkey Alerts is the easiest way to keep up with the latest information from all over the web. News headlines, sports news, computer news, and most importantly - all your Bearkey service updates These include notifications for topics or boards being updated, a user wanting to speak to you in IRC, specific users posting, or even posts which contain certain words or phrases.

Map tracks cereal around the globe

Worldmapper is a one-stop shop for dozens of specialty maps. Depending on your interest, you can view world maps that illustrate such categories as births, tourism, aircraft departures, population in certain years and even cereal imports. (Why cereal? We have no idea.)

I didn't test it yet, but it sounds good. Needs at least Firefox 1.5.

Great find!

While I won't be able to use all of the hints in there, at least I found this:

Something else I do is to do a series of exercises created by a gentleman named Pete Egoscue.  These exercises are designed to improve flexibility and range of motion and prevent injury.  And many of them can be done while reading, on the phone, etc.  I'd highly recommend Pete's book Pain Free for anyone interested in these.

Not only he seems to like that book a lot, it has raving reviews on the Amazon site! Just click the link above and see.

Also, there's this:

36 Hour Day Strategy #4: Get Organized

You really owe it to yourself to get organized because it will save you both time and stress.  There are a number of different ways and strategies for getting organized.  One of the best that I've found (and use personally) is David Allen's Getting Things Done methodology.  GTD, as it is more commonly referred to, is a system for capturing and managing the things that you need to do and remember.  It's remarkably effective in that it gets all of the little things out of your head which frees up your “psychic RAM” for more productive thoughts and results in increased creativity.

That's a book I read myself, and while I didn't master its techniques completely yet it's great, I can only recommend it.

At PC Forum 2006 in Carlsbad, Calif., Barry Schwartz, the author of "The Paradox of Choice," talks about why greater freedom and more choices often make us feel worse.

5 minutes 11 seconds

I read about this topic before, this video has examples from shopping at the super-market, speed-dating and fund-picking: http://news.com.com/...606-2_3-6054793.html

Now how do I download the video?
