Yeah, the first time I tried it, I don't think it even ran.  The last time, it ran, but with a few caveats.  I'm chewing turkey at the in-laws for the nonce, so can't say what at the moment, though my foggy memory recalls it something to do with 32-bit, and I see they have a 64 bit build available now.

General Software Discussion / Re: Are you going to wait for Windows 9?

At the risk of sounding flip, I wasn't even waiting for Windows 8.  :-\
;D

Try to remember DOS 3.0. No 'undelete' command. Peter Norton made some cash.
Fast forward to IPhone OS. No 'cut-paste'. Many programmers made some cash.

Great observation, anandcoral.  I always suspected that's why many of Windows' built-in tools left so much room for expansion or replacement.
That could be due simply to a "it works, don't fancy it up" design philosophy, but I often wondered...

No multiple window support?
Write tiling or floating window manager for Win8; make some cash.

In fact, if that's the design philosophy for Win8, a tiling window managerw would fit in quite nicely, though I'm not a big fan myself...

It's still Windows only.  :-\
Dude, check my links, there may be no need:

Swiftfox still had a few glitches on my system (don't recall ATM what), but 64-bit Nightly has been running like a champ from day one.
Nightly updates and all...

Dear Santa,
I've written you for three years now asking for a fire truck.
Please, I really really want a fire truck this year!
Love, Joey

Dear Joey,
Let me make it up to you. Tonight, I'm gonna set fire to your house.
Then you'll have more fire trucks than you'll know what to do with!
Love, Santa

I found out the secret to electronics a long time ago, it's "Blue Smoke" that makes it all work.  If there's a break and all the blue smoke escapes, the electronic item will cease to work....

AKA Magic Smoke or Factory Smoke:

Thanks, I'll keep them handy in case I need to buy space. Apparently all those coupons are for purchasing a paid account, not for extra gigs on new Free accounts.

Tried InSync, though I had to tweak the install to fix a bug and remove the dependency on Nautilus as the file manager (I use Xfce so I don't use Nautilus). Making a softlink to Thunar works a charm after that.

I'm limited to services with Linux clients, but I've tested them all...
Dropbox "just works" for me on my Linux system, even though it has the least introductory storage space.  Wuala's features look very cool and it works well, but the client takes forever to start up (I'm suspecting Java issues more than anything).  Spideroak takes for-freaking-ever to sync (and I've seen lots of threads about that; I'm not alone).  InSync is just a limited front end to Google Drive, which I must admit I haven't given any spin.
Downloading InSync now, report later...

General Software Discussion / Re: Aviary advanced suite now officially offline

Don't worry, I didn't take it badly, just pointing out the difference.

What I mean about caveats, however, is just what was pointed out in the other thread.  An Open Source project may never be gone, but dropped projects are embarassingly common.  Much of Sourceforge.net could rightly be called an elephant's graveyard for abandoned code...  :-\

That's the thing, I understand if they weren't making money, I understand that Flash is not the technology of the future for this kind of thing, and I understand if they wanted to reduce and refocus.
But to simply pull the plug?  Rather on the rude side, IMO...

This reminds me about this thread. Same basic deal, just about open source and not commercial/proprietary.

The difference, and I mean THE difference is that if Aviary were open source, it would never go away.  It may languish and stagnate without a dedicated team of maintainers, and users would complain ad nauseum, but it would never be simply and suddenly GONE.  Plenty of caveats either way.

ATM I think it's Windows SkyDrive at 7GB.

General Software Discussion / Aviary advanced suite now officially offline
« Last post by Edvard on November 11, 2012, 12:35 AM »
I only noticed this today, but apparently it happened 2 months ago.
The tools were very good, the community was huge, and the buzz was almost unstoppable.
Then came this blog post in July
Hi folks,

As you might know, Aviary officially changed directions in September 2011 to focus more on helping developers of photo apps. We currently power the photo-editing of third party apps on mobile and web through Aviary’s simple plugin for iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and HTML5.  Over the past 10 months since turning down this path, we’ve grown to 11 million active users, editing more than 150 million photos in Aviary, each month. And our tremendous growth under this new direction is showing no signs of slowing down. Even our developer showcase app “Photo Editor by Aviary” has been a smash hit, shooting up to #2 in iOS’s Photos category and breaking into the Top 25 free apps in the App Store (with a 5-star average rating).
...
We therefore have made the difficult decision to retire the advanced suite of multimedia Flash editors for artists (located at advanced.aviary.com) on September 15th, 2012.
Now it's just... gone.

OK, I understand, it cost too much money, Flash is going the way of the buffalo, etc., etc., blahblahblah, ad nauseum.

To those of you inconvenienced by this announcement, I am truly sorry. I hope you understand why this is necessary and will continue to support the company on its current path.
Inconvenienced?
Guys, you dumped an entire community of millions of musicians/students/teachers/artists/designers/regular Joes who came to rely on the ease of use and ubiquitous availability of your tools daily with no alternative path and you ask for support?!?!

I hate when these things happen. :nono2:

1979. The Shadows and Light Tour. Here's Joni Mitchell in a performance of her song Free Man in Paris accompanied by Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias, and (the much missed) Jaco Pastorius on bass.

With a band lineup like that nothing further needs be said.

Nice clip, 40.  I really like this song, and I have a story behind it.  Years ago, I was talking with a friend about music groups and their inspirations.  He told me that he had read in an interview that Talking Heads really just wanted to be a white version of K.C. and the Sunshine Band.  I scoffed, until one day I was listening to K.C. and the Sunshine Band's first album (scored the vinyl at a Goodwill record bin) and tried to imagine David Byrne singing "That's the Way (I Like It)" and somehow, it clicked.  This same friend also told me he had read that Led Zeppelin's main influence was Joni Mitchell.  I didn't believe him on that either, until one day I happened to listen to Led Zeppelin II in it's entirety before flipping on the radio and "Free Man in Paris" was the next song.

Bingo.

Now I can't hear that song without imagining it's Robert Plant singing...  ;D

As mentioned before, the main story has already been told.
