General Software Discussion / Favicon Reloader broken?
« Last post by MilesAhead on February 05, 2016, 09:40 AM »
Anyone having trouble with Favicon Reloader?  I haven't used it in a while.  Tried it today with 44.0 and got 4 reds and all the rest yellow saying "try links manually."  I backed off to FF 43.04 but I got the same results.  If it does not work with FF after some version does anyone have a good alternative?

vi vi vi - editor of the beast

Heh heh heh.

Pretty nifty :)

So what's Emacs?

Hmm, other than having its config file in Lisp, my main hassle with Emacs was the fact that it used exotic key combinations that I could never remember.  I had to look them up in the help, which used exotic key combinations I could never remember.  :)

There are Gui menus but it is wicked slow slogging if you go that route.  It has a couple of free Windows ports if you want to try it without booting Linux.

XEmacs for Windows is the one I tried on Windows.  It went on and ran in pretty straight-forward fashion.  There was a schism Emacs/XEmacs.  What it was all about I am not sure.  I post the link to XEmacs because that is the one I tried on Windows.

But you can't because your PC has begun updating to Windows 10.

hopefully that'll stump the universe reboot as well. Or maybe they're using linux....

I heard God still uses VAX/VMS because it never crashes.  All those planets and suns twirling around you don't want a system that hard locks.  We'd be in The Spilled Milky Way if that happened.  :)

Unusual that you weren't able to opt-out of the spyware.  All of the install effort really does make this not worth the bother.

It was strange.  Click the final button to install and no reaction whatsoever.

General Software Discussion / Explorer Favorites Macro hotkey thingie
« Last post by MilesAhead on February 01, 2016, 08:20 AM »
I finally got this Explorer Favorites macro hotkey thingie to work the way I want.

The idea is you have a folder open and you want to do some drag and drop between that folder and one that is in your favorites list.  Alt right click the mouse on the favorite and that folder should end up on top after the current folder is opened in a new window.

I haven't done anything with spacing them on the desktop(yet.) (Edit added MoveIt code to do it)
The hotkey is only active if Explorer is the active window.

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. SetWorkingDir %A_ScriptDir%
  2. CoordMode,Mouse,Screen
  3.
  4. GroupAdd,ExplorerGroup, ahk_class CabinetWClass
  5. GroupAdd,ExplorerGroup, ahk_class ExploreWClass
  6.
  7.
  8. #IfWinActive ahk_Group ExplorerGroup
  9. !RButton::
  10.   MouseGetPos, , ,AWindow , control
  11.   If (control != "SysTreeView321")
  12.         return
  13. Send,^n
  14. Sleep 1000
  15. WinActivate,ahk_id %AWindow%
  16. ;those running MoveIt will have folders
  17. ;staggered automagically
  18. Process,Exist,MoveIt.exe
  19.     Send,^+e
  20. return

... So long story short, if you have had any free storage allocated to your account, you have to go to this link to retain your current storage size else it will be reduced to 5GB.
Now that was interesting. As far as I know, I never had any OneDrive storage space until I purchased an Office 2016 license last October. It included 5 Gb of OneDrive storage space -- nothing extra. So out of curiosity I tried the opt-out link just now and found I had 15 Gb. Maybe I signed up long ago and forgot about it.

Click it again. Maybe you'll have 30GB.  :D

Found Deals and Discounts / NTFS Recovery Wizard [free]
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 31, 2016, 03:38 PM »
As of post time 2 days 10 hours to download NTFS Recovery Wizard.

I am not familiar with this program.  It claims to fully automatically recover data files on any NTFS formatted partition.  I thought it might be worth trying for cases such as accidentally purging the recycle bin etc..

I am going to try installing it, then deleting some files from the recycle bin.  Let's see if it can get them back easily.  Hopefully if it messes things up RollbackRX will bail me out.  :)

Edit: Never mind.  The installer tries to put crap on your system and the "skip all" to bypass the crap seems not to work.  Looks like I will snapshot back to my baseline just in case.  I could not get the install to complete so to hell with it.

You lose Real-Time Protection, Scheduled Scanning and Automatic Updates; but if money is tight (me) this may be one less expense.   :)

Generally I don't like real time protection anyway.  I have been using the free version of SAS for years.

Hindsight -

Real-time protection provides a false sense of security.  Waste of money IMO.  SAS real-time didn't block the FBI hoax.  (Avast missed it as well).

Maybe it should be REAL time protection.  Relatively Effective Although Lacking   :(

I have told this before.  But the only time I ever had a system hosed by malware was an IE BHO.  I had 2 desktops with a kvma switch.  The other PC was brand new and I was still doing the initialization.  Since it was a preload of Vista x64 and I did not have the chance to make recovery disks or a backup image yet, when I could not get the kvma to switch to the PC that was being hosed I just let it happen rather than risk losing the preload on the new PC.

I just wiped the hosed PC and installed XP Pro on it.  So far I have never had a rootkit or anything more serious than prankware(opening a zillion windows etc..)

Every time I tried something real time other than straight VSS based stuff, it hampered how my machines ran to an unacceptable level.  So I really have no choice.  The way I use RollbackRX is similar to ToolWiz Time Freeze.  I just use the baseline to back off installs I don't like.  Time Freeze is free and is OK but it squeezes the write redirects into a 5 GB file.  For some things this is fine but other times you notice a severe performance degradation.  But I would likely not put up with all the hassle involved in using RollbackRX if System Restore worked on my Laptop.  I have to uninstall RollbackRX to defrag and/or backup with Macrium.  Anyway, sorry for hijacking the thread.  :)

Just a reminder for those that have forgotten - https://preview.onedrive.com/bonus/ - you are running short of time.  ;)

Thanks.  I clicked in the nick of time.  (I got a 100GB bonus some time ago for some Bing promotion that I still don't understand.  I've never seen any explanation for cashing in the points anywhere.)  The 100GB is worth keeping.   :Not sure if it would be chopped but no sense taking chances.

https://topwaresale....re-365-pro-giveaway/

As of post time there is 2 days, 17 hours and change to download.  The installer has no registration requirement(or is pre-registered) and is for Wise Care 365 Pro 3.98.

I like the utilities in this package.  My only advice would be to preserve your browser cookies you may want to disable all the Internet cleaning categories before running a clean using the Common Cleaner.  I use CCleaner to clean out my browser history since it allows you to list the cookies you wish to keep.

So far updating to 44.0 the only side effect has been losing the Reader AddOn Button.  A reinstall got it back.

General Software Discussion / Re: Comment Explorer 2.5.0.4
« Last post by MilesAhead on January 28, 2016, 08:56 AM »
It was the hotkey combo. ... I ... checked assignments using Ethervane ActiveHotkeys (might be an old version...)

That's not guaranteed to find all used Hotkeys. Apparently some arent registered or something, and show as free even though they aren't. (To clarify: I dont believe it's a flaw of ActiveHotkeys as such, more one of 'the system'.)

Also I think by default AutoHotkey hooks the keyboard and checks the active windows for #IfWinActive type declarations and lets the keys pass if the window is not active or whatnot.  So it would be just about impossible for a utility to detect all the hotkey settings.  My program is a bit of a kludge but it is one way to go if you like using Explorer as file manager and don't want to set up an explicit comment file with a note Tree type program.  I admit it is just a hack.  But Windows does make it tough to do much better without writing your own file manager.  :)

I do now; still no luck on FF font size too small, but not sure if all my options are aligned; I pick 14 as minimum font but some fonts on some pages still look like 10pt.

Just to clarify, checkcompatibility works more like it should be named 'fix compatibility'; right? That's what it does; right?

I guess it is a fix for the check compatibility thingy.  Afa the fonts I also use ColorToggle for cases when I need light text on a dark background to read easily.  Although I don't use it as often since I switched Firefox to use ComicSans font.  It seems less blurry.

Sometimes I do notice when I use the webcam, this very powerful blue light shines in my eyes.  When I next realize what is going on, several hours have passed.  When I check my debit card it shows I purchased a bunch of MS development tools I already got for free at the college.
