Living Room / Re: Does DRM Kill the End of a Movie??!?
« Last post by J-Mac on May 31, 2010, 05:06 PM »
I have seen the same problem only when I connected my DVD player via HDMI. I think my HDTV - though it claims to be HDMI-compliant - was very poorly designed WRT HDMI. When the DVD player failed to work well on HDMI I switched and put my Roku player on the HDMI connection - same problem. The TV is the common element here.

Just a thought.

mcurran,

Here's the website of the Cloudberry Explorer developers:  http://cloudberrylab.com/ . It's pretty decent and it's free!

Also here is a link to a review of the various Amazon S3 Clients at the labnol site: http://www.labnol.org/internet/amazon-s3-clients-roundup/8286/ . It's about a year old but most of the info is still valid.

Living Room / Re: Ergonomic mouse and keyboard
« Last post by J-Mac on May 22, 2010, 12:34 PM »
I purchased the Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard and my only real problem is the same one that apparently all users have with it: this doggone Space Bar. It is extremely hard to depress unless you hit it right in the center; I mean, you can certainly press the sides of the bar but as often as not it doesn’t go all the way down because of how stiff it is. And regardless where you press the space bar it is LOUD! The first time I was typing a lot of text and tapping away at the keys fairly fast - well, as fast as I do which isn't really that fast! - my better half stopped in my office to see if I was beating the keyboard to death. I wasn’t hitting any keys harder than normal; it's just that the space bar makes that loud of a click each time you press it - and you press the space bar a lot when typing. I have seen this mentioned in virtually all reviews for this KB, some a number of years old, so Microsoft is surely well aware of the issue. Apparently they haven't seen fit to fix the design.

I have removed the space bar three times now and tried to apply fixes I have seen in various forums to no avail, though admittedly I have not tried any that actually involve cutting or snapping any thing off in there.

I also got myself a Logitech Marble Mouse track ball.  I have used it for a few weeks now and I do like the feel of it. My only problem with it is the lack of any way to scroll pages with it. Of course you can use the scroll bar and hold the left button while you do so but that doesn’t quite make up for a mouse scroll wheel unfortunately. I also installed UberOptions so I could modify the left extra button, just above the regular left mouse button, to make that  act as a "middle mouse button", so I can press that  and scroll like if you press & click on the scroll wheel of a regular mouse. But again that's not quite the same. Also, I have finally given up trying to do any fine, detailed mouse work with the track ball; I was getting to be OK with it but I just cannot use it quite as finely as I can I good quality regular mouse. So I have both types attached and I switch to the regular mouse only when I need finer cursor control than I can get with the trackball.

Thanks!

Thanks mcurran. I'll have to get ahold of Tobias and ask him what's up.

BTW, that was the Cloudberry Explorer I was referring to in the other post. Is that what you  are using?

Thanks again!

When potentially interesting articles get pulled because somebody "expresses concern".
re: the above-referenced article.
Hello Everyone,
A big thank you for all the interest in this study guide. It was
originally created as a fun introduction that took the Cognitive
Bias wiki and tried to make it easier to memorize.
However, the authors of the wiki article have expressed some
concern over the accuracy of certain entries. The document is
being taken down for the time being until that can be
corrected. Thank you for your interest.
Sincere apologies for any troubles this caused!
Eric

 :(

I "bolded" the line in your quote that says the authors of the wiki article themselves are the ones responsible for it being pulled. That's a little different than someone else having it pulled. Unless I misunderstood that paragraph.

Thanks!

Hello there Mr. Sirlimpalot!

I remember you from when you first posted about your program. At the time I asked you about using it for a family history research project - and that is still what I would use it for. At the time IIRC you said about some users using it for that but then you went on about how big a subject time itself is, etc. and I got the feeling that you didn't really want to discuss such usage. Might have been wrong about that though.

I did recently visit your website and I couldn't find a price for the software anywhere on the site. I though that was kind of strange.

Anyway, welcome back!

wraith, I posted this as MY annoyance; why are you soo annoyed by my annoyance that you find it necessary to post your own annoyance with my annoyance here in the Annoyance thread?  (Let's see someone diagram THAT sentence!)

I don’t see other folks counter-posting against other members' annoyances! This is my own personal, petty, seething annoyance! Let it be already!!   :P :P

Soo... a software developer can create a program that we trust to run on our computers but he/she cannot figure out how to make the installer work? Hmm... Makes one wonder...   :-\

Developers which decide that:

A. think their application MUST launch at system startup, regardless of the option I choose during installation
B. choose to create a start menu folder which contains the VERSION number without deleting or detecting previous versions thus resulting in APP V1.0, APP V1.1, APP V1.110, APP V1.2, etc in the start menu.

No to mention developers who insist on naming their company something entirely unrelated to their - or any - software and then using that name in the installer pkg. Which ultimately results in you looking for APP V1.0 and finally finding it in C:\Program Files\Pepito's Pizza Factory and Software Inc\.

C'mon! Get off the high stinking horse and just use the software app's name!

Wow !!! Thanks superboyac for such a nice testimonial.

As far as my level of commitment to this project, no need to worry. I'll bring it to v1.0 and beyond !
Glad to hear.  I've been working with Armando the last couple of weeks, and I was continually blown away by what he was able to do with the program.

Well expand a little on this! I've never quite been able to master IQ well enough to make it my "daily use" data collection/organizing tool, though I do have a license and would love someday to be able use it more, or even to learn more about using it.

I usually need a good reference for (almost constant!) referral, like a comprehensive manual or a good Help file. When it is all on the forum or a wiki-type help system I flounder quickly and then drift back to my current standby info manager.
Let's hear how you are using IQ; are you using it for all your info collecting/organization? Or just for a specific project at present?

Thanks!

WOw - that is indeed scary. And actually, I think that down deep on some level I knew that copiers had some capabilities like this. I remember when I was still working we got Canon copiers that were connected to our company network; we could scan documents to PDF and distribute/email them right from the machines. I just never considered the personal privacy risks inherent.

Thanks!

I use Chameleon Startup Manager. It stops all programs from setting themselves up to start with Windows automatically, and asks me if I want it to be in the startup config. Or I can configure it to just deny without asking me also. There are some other apps that similarly control what goes into startup config.

Hmm... strange, Jim. I fired up XYplorer on my system and note that I have it set to dual pane with a preview of a jpg open. I checked the CPU usage before minimizing to tray - fluctuated between 0 and 2%, for a few seconds. After I minimized it, I watched it in TaskManager for about five minutes and it is absolutely steady at 0%. I maximized the window again and even with the preview displayed there has been absolutely no CPU activity for the past three or four minutes.

Win 7 64-bit on a notebook running an Intel Core 2 Duo processor (T9300 @2.5Ghz, though I am also running granola on this machine).

Heh, heh - just had a brief "blip" to 1% CPU on xyplorer.exe *32 and it's back to 00...

I never noticed it until just recently. Perhaps it is something to do with the latest build? Well all I can do is keep an eye or two on it.

Thank you.

I notice that when I have XYPlorer open and minimized to the tray, it eats up some CPU: always 5 to 8% but occasionally jumps to 20% or more. Shouldn’t be active in any way. Maybe it is auto-refreshing periodically? Still seems to use a bit much CPU for that.

Thank you.

I don’t know - he claims to never sell or give out info to any other entity; he already has my email address from the daily deal email subscription and he appears clean on that front.

Looks like he wants to run a active forum. Oh - I think I see. He mentions in his forum that he will have a record of which software apps each "member" purchased or viewed. Looks like it might be a way for him to "customize" deals for individual people. I don’t think I want yet another organization tracking where I look and what I buy so they can tailor ads to what they perceive as my interests.

Is BDJ Nico's personal company? Or is there a group backing him? Anyone know?

Thanks!

Hmm... I just dropped in at Bits duJour earlier to see what deals are coming up for the next week and - I could only see a couple days of deals. They just put a lock on their Future Deals page and you must register and log in to see more than two days of deals now. No explanation given that I can find. There is a link for "more info" but it just took me to their forum where a thread about this was filled with a lot of folks complaining about having to log in and allow cookies. The admin there, Nico, mentioned that he wants to "…incentivize people to sign up and log in". Why the hell would he want to motivate people to have to log in to see his Future Deals??  (I'm not going to use that neologism Nico used!).

Tim,

I understand that companies should - and hopefully most do - test all new software/versions before rolling them out to the client boxes, however we are talking about virus definition files here. It is not reasonable to expect any IT dept. to test every virus def. update as they are often released several times daily. Heck, some companies - like Eset which I use - send out definition files hourly and even more frequently if needed!

I do agree that McAfee is remiss in not having tested the subject release a bit more thoroughly before foisting it on their (former??) customers.

Thanks!

This is what happens with mickey mouse personal 'anti-virus' software. With professional anti-virus programs this has never/will never happen.
It's a shame home users never get to experience this.

Uhhh...  the McAfee screw up DID affect "professional" users; the false positives occurred in Enterprise versions; very few home users were affected.

I use DOpus but I also have XYPlorer (lifetime license) and TC (also a lifetime license). I use DOpus mainly because it has a lot of features and is easy to operate. XYPlorer also has a lot of features but TBH I Don’t know how to use a lot of them. I do know that early on a lot of its features were available through scripting, but I often have problems with scripting: mainly that developers seem to leave the learning of scripting up to the users. I Don’t want to have to learn how to code before I can use a program. I'm not saying that XY is quite that, but any app that requires a knowledge of scripting in order to use it effectively should, IMO, teach the scripting to its users and/or just provide a UI to overcome that.

I agree that DOpus has slowed down a lot since I started using it, and I would definitely switch to XY in a minute if I could do so without a large learning curve.

Thank you.

Your circumstances sound similar to mine: I agree with you on Newegg's search and reviews - both are excellent resources. I also use Amazon Prime (though more and more I notice that the Prime "free shipping" price is equal to the best overall price from non-Prime vendors on Amazon plus their shipping).

Tiger Direct - I'll have to check them out. This is what I am looking for; some alternatives to Amazon and Newegg for when I can't find an items at either place. I haven't gained full trust in Google Shopping yet; I have seen a few vendors listed there that I know are trouble sometimes. I have heard the name "Fry's" mentioned a lot also.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: NewEgg

Not irrational at all. Sounds like a process problem - who is supposed to initiate and complete a task, how quickly they should get it done and note it as such in their tracking system, and very importantly - how they manage their communication of such issues to the customer. I've seen similar process problems in the past with Newegg. Not so bad that I refuse to use them but TBH I usually only buy there if Amazon doesn’t have the item available through my Prime account.

I wouldn’t dump them altogether; and I'm pretty sure you would still buy there if the price was right. But I agree that this wasn’t handled properly.

I'm curious:what other online vendors do DC members use regularly for tech purchases? I usually get all my tech items from either Amazon or Newegg, and most of that at Amazon. But Amazon isn't really geared up to sell tech/computer stuff. Their site search sucks and they don’t offer any decent drill-down feature. E.g., if you are looking for USB flash drives the search results page doesn’t have the ability to select size, like 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, etc. And their search results often have all other sizes mixed in if you search for a specific size. Who do you all use?

Thanks!

Ouch! I haven't lost anything with Dropbox, but I thought I did on a few occasions. Dropbox has occasionally done some weird things. Every now and then an empty folder will appear in my Dropbox. Named the same as another folder somewhere on my computer. I don’t know how or why that happens and neither do the Dropbox folks apparently. They look into it and upon finding no reason they kind of imply that perhaps it was user error. Not so. In one case a folder mysteriously appeared in the parent Dropbox folder that was named the same as another folder I had within a subfolder in my Dropbox. I initially thought it WAS the existing folder and freaked a bit because it was now empty. I finally realized that it was not that folder but an odd duplicate that I certainly never created. Anyway even though there have been a few mystic folders appearing, no data has ever been lost.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: How to work with stupid people
« Last post by J-Mac on May 03, 2010, 10:45 PM »
Of course the initial premise depends largely on what is considered "reasonably intelligent" and "stupid". I imagine that most here have read this little nugget by Isaac Asimov:

What Is Intelligence Anyway?

by Isaac Asimov

What is intelligence, anyway? When I was in the army, I received the kind of aptitude test that all soldiers took and, against a normal of 100, scored 160. No one at the base had ever seen a figure like that, and for two hours they made a big fuss over me. (It didn't mean anything. The next day I was still a buck private with KP - kitchen police - as my highest duty.)

All my life I've been registering scores like that, so that I have the complacent feeling that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering the type of academic questions that are considered worthy of answers by people who make up the intelligence tests - people with intellectual bents similar to mine.

For instance, I had an auto-repair man once, who, on these intelligence tests, could not possibly have scored more than 80, by my estimate. I always took it for granted that I was far more intelligent than he was. Yet, when anything went wrong with my car I hastened to him with it, watched him anxiously as he explored its vitals, and listened to his pronouncements as though they were divine oracles - and he always fixed my car.

Well, then, suppose my auto-repair man devised questions for an intelligence test. Or suppose a carpenter did, or a farmer, or, indeed, almost anyone but an academician. By every one of those tests, I'd prove myself a moron, and I'd be a moron, too. In a world where I could not use my academic training and my verbal talents but had to do something intricate or hard, working with my hands, I would do poorly. My intelligence, then, is not absolute but is a function of the society I live in and of the fact that a small subsection of that society has managed to foist itself on the rest as an arbiter of such matters.

Consider my auto-repair man, again. He had a habit of telling me jokes whenever he saw me. One time he raised his head from under the automobile hood to say: "Doc, a deaf-and-mute guy went into a hardware store to ask for some nails. He put two fingers together on the counter and made hammering motions with the other hand. The clerk brought him a hammer. He shook his head and pointed to the two fingers he was hammering. The clerk brought him nails. He picked out the sizes he wanted, and left. Well, doc, the next guy who came in was a blind man. He wanted scissors. How do you suppose he asked for them?"

Indulgently, I lifted by right hand and made scissoring motions with my first two fingers. Whereupon my auto-repair man laughed raucously and said, "Why, you dumb jerk, He used his voice and asked for them." Then he said smugly, "I've been trying that on all my customers today." "Did you catch many?" I asked. "Quite a few," he said, "but I knew for sure I'd catch you." "Why is that?" I asked. "Because you're so goddamned educated, doc, I knew you couldn't be very smart."

And I have an uneasy feeling he had something there.
