« Last post by kalos on August 17, 2012, 06:23 PM »
Hello!

I do alot reading, that requires me to search for specific text in wikipedia, web, google translate, some pdf files, etc

Is there a way to get results from all these in one window?

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / screen for reading and browsing
« Last post by kalos on August 17, 2012, 03:49 PM »
hello!

as most monitors nowadays, my monitor is very wide

this maybe good for movies and games, but my main usage is text reading and web browsing, which should be better to have long vertical dimension and short horizontal (so that eyes wont get tired moving from one edge to the other)

is there a way that can split my screen vertically and display each window to each area?

placing my screen in portrait mode, makes it ridiculously elongated

thanks!

"put them in line sequencially" = place the text of encountered blocks in a page one after the other, as you read

the problem with PDF to RTF/DOC/TXT converters is that they mess up the text because they try to retain the layout

what I want is the text and the graphics (and tables saved as graphics)

General Software Discussion / most powerful web automation
« Last post by kalos on August 17, 2012, 10:19 AM »
hello!

while I am quite (not completely though) satisfied with GUI automation (I use AHK for this), I still havent find an easy way for web automation

learning JS, Greasemonkey and such is kinda cumbersome and has severe limitations (eg. cannot write data to a simple text file)

I have so far, found these tools:
Mechanize
UBot
Selenium
Watir

are there any more?

which is the best? the most powerful? even if I have to learn more

thanks!

General Software Discussion / recognize blocks in pdf, align them and edit them
« Last post by kalos on August 17, 2012, 07:09 AM »
hello!

I want to edit pdf files of textbooks as I read them

nothing special, just remove some garbage sentences, add some text, etc

however, as you all know, working with pdf is troublesome

i wonder if a program exists that identifies blocks of pdf, that contain text or graphics, put them in line sequencially, and let you edit the text as in msword, without messing things up

thanks!

General Software Discussion / lazy click
« Last post by kalos on August 14, 2012, 10:35 AM »
hello!

this firefox addon extends the clickable area around clickable controls, so that you wont miss the control you want to click
https://addons.mozil...le/addon/lazy-click/

it is brilliant and very convenient, so I wonder if there is such thing or similar for general mswin gui???

thanks!

hello!

in an existing pdf file, I want to insert editable forms in specific positions, for example in this :

http://www.walgreens...rescriberFaxForm.pdf

I want to specify the fonts, the wrapping, the input (eg. only digits allowed in specific form and only specific number of digits), etc

how can I do that?

thanks!

General Software Discussion / my pc anywhere
« Last post by kalos on August 09, 2012, 04:58 AM »
hello!

I want to literally have my pc with me, without having to carry the hardware

ie, i want to somehow be able to make in any pc, my own winxp installation to appear, with its settings, its shortcuts, its macros, its customizations, its programs, its files etc

it should work flawlessly in any pc, it should save all possible actions i may do, eg manipulate files, install software, etc

it should leave no trace to the pc i work on, and it should be secure (not being able to be monitored by the host pc, or to get virus, etc)

is this possible?

thanks!

General Software Discussion / mswin vs linux in academia
« Last post by kalos on August 02, 2012, 08:18 AM »
hello!

i know there are numerous mswin vs linux topics, but in a new workplace i am in (computational chem, biology, etc), they use mainly linux
is there anything in general (or particularly in specific sciences like these) that we cannot do it in mswin and can do it in linux?
i mean, okay, there maybe copyright issues that make linux definately more attractive, but practically do they have differences in abilities?
for example, vi, tex, etc are very much used in academia. arent there mswin counterparts that are the same or even better?

thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: scan and seperate
« Last post by kalos on June 06, 2012, 03:58 PM »
then just let it do that, and use a simple tool to take a pdf file and extract each page to a separate pdf file -- surely they exist.

the problem is that a file may contain many pages, so 1 page = 1 pdf is not always correct

browsing pages and splitting them to seperate multipage files is also less convenient than just placing papers with barcode between the documents when feeding them to the scanner

General Software Discussion / scan and seperate
« Last post by kalos on June 05, 2012, 04:22 AM »
hello!

I want to load a pack of papers to a sheetfed scanner, but each document must be seperated

how can I do this?

is there a way to make it automatic, instead of me spliting manually the scans?

I saw some apps that require to place pages with barcodes between the documents, but are too much expensive

any cheaper or free solution, or a program I already own (Abbyy, etc) or any totally alternative solution?

thanks!

okay, I am between powershell or vb or c#

which would be best? definately for this task described in the first post, but also for other tasks as well (eg create a GUI)

« Last post by kalos on June 03, 2012, 10:18 AM »
mm, is there a freeware method, because I need it urgently and I dont have the time to decide for a purchase?

I once saw a tool in gimp, paint.net, inkscape or something, that fills an image with its surrounding, which was amazing
photoshop has a tool like that too, but dont know how it's called

hello!

I want to select some items in a photo (raster) and delete them and then fill the void with colors of the surroundings

I want to draw an area that will not resemble rectangular, circle, etc (it will have complicated margins) and fill it with specific color or color pattern

I want to replace a photograph with its relevant sketch

how do I do these?

thanks!
