Another vote for SoftMaker Office  Kingsoft is also an excellent choice, but (if memory serves), it's heavier on resources and more a feature for feature copy of Office.

Keep 'em coming  :)

Crap - not available from the Canadian store yet (and I can't order through the US site - they check your "zip" code to calculate taxes and I don't have one!). Guess I'll try again mid next week.

I can tell you in no uncertain terms that this is a "just do it to be safe" suggestion, but rather a "do this now or there are not enough words in the world tot ell you how sorry you will be if you continue" mandate.

I assume that "this is 'just a do it to be safe suggestion'" was meant to read 'this is not 'just a do it to be safe'"?

Crap! The memory leak is what has kept ME from using Actual Windows Manager for years as well... I was hoping it had been fixed by now. At one point, I was offered a 50% discount to buy AWM after uninstalling a demo of it, but I didn't jump at the time (because of the memory leak!).

Curt - I'm using Metapad under Vista 64 bit with no problems! I've been using it since I was on Win 98SE and love it. There are editing and search/replace features that are awesome in such a little package

I don't know if they still teach it this way, but back when I was in school, possessives that ended in an s were written as an s+apostrophe. As in: Hans' hands were holding Hoss' horses' saddles. (Hmmm...not bad!)

Definitely the way I learned it in school!

(Which reminds me... the overuse of ellipses - my own included!)

OK... I'm definitely guilty of that one  :-[

I find that error really (real?) annoying.

Ah! I thought of two more (that could possibly start a mini-flame war - so be it):

1. Pronouncing the "i" in Multi, Demi, Semi, etc. as "eye" instead of "ee" (heh, heh - I used a good illustration of why this is wrong in my paranthetic comment above: it's min-ee, not min-eye, no?)
2. Statements that go something like: "she's real pretty" instead of "she's really pretty"

Oddly, I can't think of any others, but there are more.

I pass this hand painted sign on my morning bike-ride and it never fails to make me laugh:

"Slow kids playing on road"

This one doesn't annoy me so much because it's very entertaining  ;D

Is that the bald truth?

Sorry, that's a millinery secret.

As in you could tell us, but then you'd have to scalp us?

Uh-oh, closet Grammar Nazi confession time... :nono2:

These things make me facepalm repeatedly:

Lose vs. Loose
Should've (should have) vs. Should of
One and the same vs. One in the same
Case in point vs. Case and point
Tremolo vs. Vibrato (40Hz, please tell me you know what I'm talking about...)

The list goes on, I'll expand as I collect more...
:wallbash

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop! Those are like finger-nails on a chalkboard to me...

How about adding:

"Couldn't care less" vs. of "Could care less"

Oddly, I can't think of any others, but there are more. Many more. No doubt I'll remember more as soon as this is posted (which always annoys the snot out of me as well).

EDIT: Corrected crappy editing. Doh! ANOTHER thing that annoys me no end...

Hi Jamey - welcome to DC and good luck with those exams! I went to two uni's in the UK (and one in Canada) - make the most of the next few years - no matter where you go, you only get out of the experience what you put into it...  ;)
1067
ActiveWords and SpellCatcher Plus are both working fine on my Vista 64 install BUT I don't really use either much/often.

Welcome, heayanae! I'm glad you've found DC and are finding it a nice place to hang out

Team America: World Police - So over the top that no one could actually think it was gross, (although I'm not sure whether to class this film as an actual documentary or not ).

Don't get too rone-ree under that chair, 4wd... you might break into song!

Hmm... I use 8 of the programmes on the list - more than I anticipated. Note that ProcessTamer is listed as the BEST FREE PROCESS MANAGER.

Thanks for compiling this and welcome to DC, Johnny! Hope to see more of you around DC

Hmm... now that I see the jpg "full-size" here, maybe it's not the best test candidate... The font looks big in the jpg. rjbull - do you have an image file that you could post for me to try to convert or is this what you were looking for?
1072
Nuance does very well, as far as I can tell. I had a scanned image from a Casio calculator user's manual on my harddrive and used Nuance to convert it to editable text (Word docx format). I t can't attach the pdf or Word doc, unfortunately. The result is very good. The font in the Word doc is 7.5 in size. I've attached the jpg so that you can see the original size.

fx570 USER MANUAl_3.jpg

EDIT: couldn't post with either pdf or docx attachments - rewritten to reflect this.
1073
Darwin, how does Nuance fare on PDFs with small fonts?  Able2Extract tends to fail, not altogether surprising as PDF seems to handle fonts differently from Windows.

I'm not sure I understand the question - do you mean when creating a document or in searching a pdf or...?

Excellent idea, innuendo  I'm in your camp - that is, I own a licence but have barely scratched the surface of this great file manager.
