Living Room / Is technology killing old loved books?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 25, 2014, 02:41 PM »
In this age of electronic books, are we losing the magic of passing on a well-thumbed paperback, perhaps with a name scribbled inside - or even notes in the margin that tell a story of where a book has been? Or can the two happily co-exist, giving us the best of both worlds?
Josh Spero, author of Second Hand Stories and editor of Spear's Magazine, and the author Erica Wagner, a former literary editor at the Times newspaper, mulled over the question of new tech and old books.

Oh, ffs, this is like being back at school :D

* Stephen66515 posts a video about commas, in spite of the fact it might remind us of school :p (good use of commas, innit?)

I'm reminded: I joined the donationcoder fan club a couple of years ago - where you get stickers, membership card, etc. in the post.
I can still remember the envelope from Jesse, it had a stamp on the back saying:
; Semi-colon

Living Room / Watch A Hornet Be Cooked Alive By Bees
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 25, 2014, 02:38 PM »

A single Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica) can kill forty honeybees a minute. A small group of them can decimate an entire bee colony. The hornet’s scissor-like teeth can wreak havoc on their prey so swiftly that Japanese honeybees had to adapt to survive.

Instead of stinging the intruder, the honeybees swarm the hornet and begin vibrating, raising their collective temperature to 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47.2 ºC) and turning their crush of bodies into somewhat of a convection oven. While the honeybees can tolerate temperatures of 118 degrees Fahrenheit (47.8 ºC), Japanese giant hornets can only tolerate 115 degrees (46.1 ºC).

Watch the honeybees save their colony in a three minute video below.

Felix Baumgartner shattered the world record for highest-altitude jump when he famously plummeted 128,100 feet to Earth on October 9, 2012. Sponsored by Red Bull, the event was an international phenomenon as 12.6 million people watched the event live. In the early morning hours of October 24, 57-year-old computer scientist Alan Eustace quietly broke that record by completing a jump from over a mile higher at 135,890 feet.

He had partnered with Paragon Space Development Corporation and was testing one of their life support spacesuits; the event was not done merely for publicity. The suit protected Eustace from the drastic temperature changes as he ascended and then descended through the atmosphere, and provided pure oxygen for him to breathe.

Information Update: 25th October 2014

DrWeb AntiVirus confirmed that their report of SlackyApp was indeed a False Positive, and have resolved the error!  Very VERY happy with their response time.  Now just need to wait for the final one to report back and I will have 0 hits on VirusTotal!

Living Room / (Video): When to use a comma.
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 25, 2014, 01:44 PM »
Let’s Begin…
It isn't easy holding complex sentences together (just ask a conjunction or a subordinate), but the clever little comma can help lighten the load. But how to tell when help is really needed? Terisa Folaron offers some tricks of the comma trade.

Heh - I take the list at face value, none of the A/V companies are interested in false positives, it might compromise their ranking scores!  Those first three probably just send reports to the bit bucket anyway  :P

Also, fwiw, you don't mention VMware vCenter Protect (which used to be Shavlik until they were bought out... and a sorry story that was). They license the Vipre engine, or at least used to, for the product.

I will add that one to the list once I make some more edits.

FWIW, I e-mailed Dr Web about a False Positive flag on my software (SlackyApp) and within a couple of hours, got this back from them:

Dear Stephen,

Your request has been analyzed. It was a false alarm. The error was fixed.

Thank you for the cooperation.

Living Room / Re: auto wifi

Android wifi with credentials doesn't auto connect?

The WiFi does connect, but the proxy/router asks for confirmation or credentials before you are allowed to access the outside world.

I can confirm this one - Recently tried to connect to a BTOpenZone WiFi network the other day, not even an hour after disconnecting, and it had already forgotten me and wanted my e-mail address to login again - Not really much of an issue to be honest.

ofcourse it is an issue, because your phone is supposedly connected to wifi, but it is not! and it doesn't automatically switch to 3G! It is in a state with no internet access!

Well, for me, I only have WiFi turned on IF I have 3G turned off, or didn't topup and have no data allowance ON 3G.

DC Gamer Club / Re: Are Ubisoft trying to kill PC gaming?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 25, 2014, 12:46 PM »
This is status quo for PC gaming. Remember when Crysis came out? A top-of-the-line, brand new PC couldn't run it on the highest settings. AC:U will likely be used for benchmarking purposes for the next few years until even CPU-embedded graphics can run it and then the next bigger and better thing will replace it.

This.

See, that's the thing...Crysis actually NEEDED those specs in order to run on max settings...people from all over are reporting that this game actually completely locks out at 30FPS even on some incredible SLI setups using some really top spec graphics cards.

How can we say that AC:U doesn't before it comes out?  And those minimum specs are nowhere near a 2k machine.  Even the VC on the higher range spec isn't terribly expensive.

Also, the title of this thread sort of reminds me of linkbait.

No intention of a Linkbait/Clickbait style title...I hate Clickbait and have unfollowed about 50 different people/pages on Facebook this week alone just for doing crap like "OMG MAN GOES OUTSIDE, YOU WILL NEVER GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT" - "FAMILY BUYS SON A PUPPY, AND WHAT HAPPENS NEXT IS UNBELIEVABLE - THEY NEVER THOUGHT ANYTHING LIKE THIS WOULD HAPPEN"

My answer to both of those is..."No...I won't...and I won't ever find out, cause I ain't clicking ANYTHING from you" :P

I mean...I can understand the need for x64, that much I won't dispute...that's common standard these days for the higher tier games (Due to the obvious limitations within x86 in terms of memory) so...yeah, can't argue with that...but the rest of it...why lock out at 30FPS?  Seems a bit dodgy to me.

Personally, I always saw Assassin's Creed as one of those titles they can't sell so give away with every new console just so people might play it.  I have NEVER bought a copy of it, but always ended up having a few copies in my collection that never got opened (Usually got sold or traded in) because it happened to be packaged in with a console...or given to me by somebody else who bought a console and also didn't want the game in their collection.

Further to the above, consider these 2 images:

1Rupeem.png

They are both exactly the same image, but have 1 vital difference between the 2.

The top one is Hotlinked from Imgur.com where the second one has been uploaded to, and now hosted directly by DonationCoder.com

I did this by doing the following:

[img]http://i.imgur.com/1Rupeem.png[/img]
[ attach=1 ]

Things within the [img][/img] tags are Hotlinked - Meaning that the forum simply pulls the image from the website where it is hosted, and shown here.

Things that are linked with the [attach=#] tag are hosted by DonationCoder.com itself - This is shown by having to use the "Attach" file option when making a post, which uploads the file directly to the DonationCoder.com server in order to show the file here.

It means there is no attack or malware hosted on or coming from DonationCoder.
It could mean that you just happened to see these alerts while you happened to be browsing the DonatinCoder forum.

--

Another thing to check is if this alert pops up when you view certain posts on the forum -- it's always possible that someone has a photo in their signature or in a post that is linking to another site and that that site is pinging your machine when you load it.

'I'm not clear what you are saying...' you're not hosting if it's a photo or link here?

I will keep track of where i see it and what tabs are open.

Some user avatars are hosted on external servers for which DC has no control over (Like mine...it is hosted on Imgur.com and NOT DC).  Linking & Hotlinking are NOT the same as Hosting.

After checking the IP addresses above, I came up with the following:

80.82.78.166 - Takes to a website which just has the text "Oh hi there" - The IP is hosted by the ISP: Ecatel LTD

89.248.168.46 - Resolves to offshore20.tronichost.com - Also hosted by the ISP: Ecatel LTD - However, when checking the website for content, the resolution link takes to a "This website may be for sale" and the IP takes you to an Apache2 Test Page.

Neither of these IPs are connected or affiliated with DonationCoder.com AT ALL.
1066
If you can get this list filled in and kept updated, it would be extremely useful

I will be doing as soon as I get 2 minutes to add more lol, currently trying to compose an e-mail - work out a bit of code in SlackyApp and fix my Sig that you keep moaning about...so gimme a moment!  ;D

Some of these company websites are in languages I don't understand - so if people who do, can help find links for those - that would be SUPER helpful!

DC Gamer Club / Are Ubisoft trying to kill PC gaming?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on October 24, 2014, 04:18 PM »
Ubisoft has since confirmed that PC owners wanting to play Assassin’s Creed Unity should have at least a GTX 680/ Radeon HD 7970 GPU and an Intel Core i5 2500K/ AMD FX-8350 CPU. a 64-bit OS is also required. Also, laptop GPUs aren’t “officially supported”. It is still recommended that you own at least a GTX 780 or an AMD R9 290X along with an Ivy-bridge Intel Core i7 3770 CPU.

Would YOU build a $2000 system just to play "Yet another Assassin's Creed" title?

Original Story:

The official Assassin’s Creed Unity PC specification requirements may have leaked and they are pretty high. Minimum CPU and GPU requirements may restrict the game to those who built a fairly high end PC sometime in the last two years. Minimum CPU requirement features Intel’s Sandy Bridge Core i5 2500K or an AMD FX-8350. The recommended CPU is an Ivy-bridge Intel Core i7 3770.
PC owners will need at least 6GB of RAM, a trend that began to surface just last year. On the GPU side of things a GTX 680 or Radeon HD 7970 are the minimum while the recommended GPUs include a GTX 780 or R9 290x. The game will also require 50GB of free hard drive space.  The overly high minimum Processor and Graphics Card requirements restrict the game to those who built fairly high end PCs sometime since 2012.

I have nothing to contribute that will help...but I must ask something...

You said "She" a couple of times as if you are referring to somebody...but make no indication as to who...care to enlighten us?  :D

I mainly ask because the start of your post makes literally no sense...it is almost as if you brought us all in half way through a conversation:

She also is not fond of spending big bucks on anything and in some cases I have to agree.

Thanks a lot from out team! It works! Just one feature request: notifications!

I assume you mean Desktop notifications?  If so, that is something I am working on adding already :P - This is a difficult one to get running however so I cannot promise...but I CAN promise to try...after all...I didn't think Cookies would be possible in this...but those are now here, so who knows!

Thanks a lot from out team! It works! Just one feature request: notifications!

Optional! And no balloons!

Perhaps use a small toaster style alert that won't activate your taskbar.

If I can get them working, I can give you lots of options on how to receive them :D

Previous bugs reported to you on IRC seem to be fixed.

Awesome!  :D
