Screenshot Captor / Re: Fixes Size Captor - How to with Minimum Key presses
« Last post by tomos on November 28, 2017, 06:35 AM »
I am still not clear of the purpose of the Favorites or how to use them - you say they "are easily toggleable from the redbox region capture mode" - I have looked in help and forum and cannot find anything on favorites or "red box capture mode".
that would be:
'Grab windows object or scrolling ..etc.' shortcut is normally Ctrl+Shift+PrintScreen
Ctrl+right-click on the instructions will show a menu including those favourites / pre-set sizes.

I think you are saying that you will add code so that wheh I select a preset size I will be able to easily to toggle through the preset sizes  - this will be very useful.
yep, sounds like that

General Software Discussion / Re: New faster Firefox browser released
« Last post by tomos on November 25, 2017, 05:41 PM »
Mozilla is getting some attention for a big new revamp of their Firefox browser that is supposed to be much faster and more memory efficient..
initially it seems to be more memory efficient.
And it is definitely more CPU/page file efficient -- where older Firefox sinned a lot for me.
But on a Win.7 laptop with 8GB memory, I have already gotten this warning a couple of times (FWIW never used get it before)
--------------
Microsoft Windows
Your computer is low on memory
To restore enough memory for programs to work correctly, save your files and then close or restart all open programs.
[OK]
------------------
this after leaving a window open a while with a bunch of tabs -- less than twenty, many of them video (mostly youtube) -- but all video except one either paused or not playing.
Closing Firefox releases ~ 4.5GB.
FWIW on restart it behaves.

^ I managed to log in at one stage but it didnt actually work. Maybe the problem is more this side of the world -- I'm definitely not alone at any rate.

I think that they meant if you had logged into lastpass while you had an internet connection, it has cached versions on your machine.

yes, that's what I understood. And they say that if you log in it will go there -- but it looks to me like you have to (in my situation) disconnect from the internet for that to happen. As it happens I managed to get into the site I was needing lastpass for, so I'm not going to follow up on that tonight. Will try it over the weekend.

This is not something I have catered for -- how can one cater for this, securely?

I don't use LastPass. Does this mean you can't now login to any websites that you have used LastPass passwords for? It needs to contact their servers each time to retrieve your password?

there's supposed to be offline access, but not sure how it works -- quote below gives the impression it would automatically work -- this was not my experience.

Offline Access to your LastPass Vault
How to Utilize Offline Access in Your Browser Extension or Mobile Application

The key to gaining offline access in your LastPass browser extension or mobile app is to have logged into the extension or app at least one time while you have had an internet connection.   This ensures that your computer or device has cached a local version of your encrypted data to the local drive. This is the data that LastPass loads when you login to LastPass while offline.   Any LastPass browser extension or mobile application can be logged into without an internet connection, and will default to this mode when no connection is present.

Please note these special options and conditions:

– In each browser extension, if you clear your LastPass Local Cache (LastPass Toolbar Icon -> More Options -> Advanced -> Clear Local Cache), you will have to log in online once more to recreate your cache before you can log in using offline mode again.

Possibly not working here because I do have an internet connection.

EDIT// I guess this is why people go for a paid version: they do offer something called 'Lastpass Pocket' (I think) that works offline. Will have to check it out.

Lastpass is broken here and seems to be broken for many others too --
I can get to the site but cannot log in -- either get no response, or 'check my internet' or having trouble connecting to the server.

Re colour/s
another option would be the blue-grey + orange/ish type theme

here a couple of variations:

1) Shadow around quote removed, orangeish colour highlight - width reduced on the left:

Screenshot - 2017-11-22 , 13_20_54.png

2) a lighter shade of blue in quote (I didnt do that very well: I couldnt just make it brighter - it changed colour as well); and the orangeish colour highlight - width reduced on the left:

FWIW my vote would be for something like #1 above

hi Tao
been meaning to reply 'properly' ...but time... is [not] on my side

I watched a couple of Kingcrusher's videos a while back:
enjoyed a lot, but they were maybe too advanced for me (I will try them again now I'm a more seasoned viewer!). They had the minor problem (for a beginner bigger though) of not highlighting the squares the piece just moved from, and to. So I kept having to rewind to follow the moves properly. (I should just ask him to do that.)
Will be interesting to see his Sultan Kahn one and compare. (Note that it's the norm to post the moves, but for me it's just better to watch the video twice.)

A story about his accent:
he was talking about the 'King's Indian' in a video I watched. Some commenters took offence, claiming he was saying the King's 'Injun', saying that was racist etc. Of course it was simply his accent -- he sort of says it like 'In-ji-an'.
London accent, innit ?! :D

^ unfortunately I didnt take a screenshot while it was blue - but it did make for a very 'cold' look. (Not saying the brown is 'it', just that it's better than the blue was.)

mouser,
another way of 'de-emphasizing' the boxes (if you wanted) would be to remove the shadow

How's it look now? (Ctrl+F5 to refresh css)

a lot better

Minor details (my speciality):

  • I'd still make the band on the left a little narrower
  • a little white space between that bar and the quotemark would be good
  • I'm not gone on the blue - makes the whole effect quite cold. (Preferred the brown FWIW -- if I get time tomorrow I could mock up a few different colours to see how they look)

Taking Ath's list:

>brown accent color?
this presumably the same colour used for member-names -- it does look much more vibrant though due to the adjacent white.
I think a thinner band on the left would be better.

>larger font?
yeah,
slightly smaller font, as before, is my preference too

>large cursive quoted name/date-time?
I like the cursive,
but I'd prefer this text to be smaller than the body text (within the quote).

>enormous upside-down-quote added?
I think definitely too big -- if font size is going to be requced, this will have to be reduced anyways -- but I'd reduce it even more.

In my browser the quote is serif font, the rest is sans-serif -- this also emphasizes the quote over the other text. To me, the quote is of importance, but of lesser importance than the text of the response -- that's why I think it should have less emphasis all round.

Below an edited sample:
  • quote body text smaller
  • quote 'title' even smaller
  • brown band on left thinner
  • one quote has a (much smaller) quote mark; the other has none

"Jerry from Chess Network" is still "only" a "national master" aka rating about 2300. That's a whole order higher than a 2000 player - the ratings are *exponential*, not "linear*!
I didnt know that, makes a big difference.

Here's a short video with a game I could stand to look art twice, featuring that Bishop to e6 move. I forgot my exact opinion when I spent a week studying this opening in medium depth but I think I chose not to use it.

https://www.youtube..../watch?v=5wvJH_I7yo8
(IM John Bartholomew on the black side of a Panov Bitvinnik Caro Kann)

that was really good -- very enjoyable

I reckon we have different interests here, in this thread, in our approach to videos -- that one from Bartholemew overlapped for me:
you (I think) are looking for instructional videos, I'm looking for entertainment. That, to me, was both. Advanced, pleasing, a good 'explainer', so a good teacher.

Going back to the YT channels you criticise -- I'll only mention agadmator here, because I hardly look at the other any more. He loves chess, he steeps himself in chess, new and old. He tells a good story, he explains well (I think) what's happening. Also looks at historic games, which as you say, (summarizing from memory), would be weak today. But so what! I could compare it to snooker: I love watching a good game of snooker. You go back to the 80's, the pockets were bigger, the standard of play a lot lower than today -- there's still classic games and matches from that time that are well worth watching imo.

You repeat the thing about them getting their info elsewhere: I've already said before it makes no difference to me where they get their info from, (and note btw that agadmator very often does check the moves via engine). If I'm starting to sound a bit defensive here, I think that partly goes back to the above (different interests / approaches). I watch to be entertained. Not to learn. (But I have learned a lot along the way -- which wouldnt be difficult given my standard :D). But also goes to you admitting you haven't watched much (or any?) of his channel, and still being critical. Note that I *completely* get the point that someone at that level would not be good enough to comment off the cuff about a game. So not as live commentators. But as someone who tells a story, and explains a game -- certainly, for my level (zero or so :p) at any rate. For your level, it's natural you would have different interests, and standards.

Not sure what you meant by the accent thing (are they 'cool' or something?)
Oddly, for me, Bartholomew's accent is a lot more foreign, because I have so little exposure to American accents (in media or IRL). But the accent, and moreso the voice, are important -- to me anyways -- if I'm going to be listening to someone, I'll want it to be pleasant (for want of a better word), or at least not grating.

Hope you understand my slant a bit better now!
