General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?
« Last post by brotherS on April 05, 2006, 04:13 AM »
I use RSS a lot for reading news while I commute.
I have a laptop, but no internet connection in the train, so I use Omea Reader (free version, my review here) to aggregate all the feeds I'm interested into, and download them in the morning, then read them "newspaper style" while in the train...
So the complete, full articles, including images (if there are any) are downloaded in the morning, yes? Sounds like a brilliant idea for anyone commuting and not having to drive!

Could you post a screenshot of how that looks? I'm curious :)

Hi,

I posted on http://forums.winamp...&threadid=242649 too:

I wonder if it's somehow possible to switch from one DSP plugin to another (or even just disabling one) without having to click through Winamp's config every time, maybe by writing a script to do that?

Any kind of advice is appreciated!

So if you have ANY idea please tell me. :) I guess one could come up with an AutoHotkey based solution for this, but maybe it's even easier.

it would be nice for 'notify' to change to 'don't notify' but did you know that clicking 'notify' in a subscribed thread will allow you to disable the notify feature?
Yes, I know that, but if you are subscribed to lots and lots of threads it's easy to forget which :)

You know, there's something weird about Alfaclock.  The have one website:
http://www.alfasoftweb.com/alfaclock/
and they sell alfaclock 2 and alfaclock classic.  THen they have another site:
http://www.alfaclock.com/
which has a beta version of alfaclock 2 (now betaclock), and alfaclock free, which seems to be a more recent version of alfaclock classic.  They are both free.  I don't get it, are they hoping people go to the first page and get duped into buying the software?  And there's no link from one page to the other.  What's the deal, it doesn't make sense?!

I found this also... why this concept is so allusive?

perhaps you could compare this to ID3 tags with MP3's - wonderful if used properly, terrible if not (not all music is Blues)...

oh, well...
Maybe just more people care about tagging their music than their images?

hahah, i should add a stat to report how often brotherS talks about miranda.
I have to, they all love it!

Btw, I saw 30 users in the channel at some point - new record!

For those of you that have been avoiding minidisc because of this, take another try at it, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Sony did the wrong for too long (again) - waiting until recently to make a great product more user-friendly was not a good idea...

I sure would like if the "NOTIFY" button would change to "DON'T NOTIFY" or something like that when you are reading a subscribed forum/thread. Just to make things a little bit easier...

I have no real need for this tool.

you've obviously forgotten about this:

PC Pitstop offered a financial incentive in its EULA, and it took four months before anyone responded.
;D ;D

Reminds me of that quote saying you can put mean words in the middle of any company profile brochure that is just focussing on the company itself - probably noone would notice!

Living Room / Re: BitTorrent - why bother?
« Last post by brotherS on April 04, 2006, 08:20 PM »
I got uTorrent after reading this thread and after a fresh Windows reinstall and have not felt the need to get back to Azureus yet. I do miss Azureus just because it worked damn well for me and I had it set up to perfection, with plugins, network tweaks and all.. but everything I've thrown at uTorrent so far has downloaded just fine, with totally acceptable speeds, so for now I'll stick with uTorrent. Not to mention uTorrent starts in less than two seconds and I can easily continue to use my computer with it running while Azureus would take up to 20+ seconds to start and would take my connection hostage pretty much, if I remember correctly.
Then you didn't set it up correctly: http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/

Funny idea :) But since I mostly install trusted stuff (lots from http://fileforum.betanews.com/ where many other users already voted and left comments) I have no real need for this tool.

which is why EVERYONE should have a plan in place for this.  Assume you are going to have a hard drive crash and/or bad issue, and have a plan for restoring your computer.  get together the info you need to do this - prepare a list of your main software and serials, a list of any customizations you've done to your pc, etc. anything you would need to recreate if you had to recover from a disaster.
You are totally right!

It's just so damn convenient not to think about that at all  :(

Well, y'all got what you asked for: a huge discount on our products :-) Check out the member section for the discount coupon on our Collectorz.com software. Limited offer, only valid through April 2006.
Thanks for the discount, I'll look into it!

A few questions:

What about your update policy? Are updates free of charge or do users have to pay every x months/years?

Are you planning to enhance the Movie collector program so I can use it to keep track of my "holiday and friends and stuff" videos too (lots of files burned to DVD+R, so I can only watch them at the PC)? If I understand your homepage correctly it aims on DVDs only now, right?

Do you like and use customer feedback to make the programs even better in the long run?

Do you offer beta versions or do you release new versions (with bugfixes and new features) frequently?

On Wednesday of this week, at two minutes and three seconds after 1:00 in the morning, the time and date will be 01:02:03 04/05/06 (at least for those using that date format).

That won't happen again for a hundred years. It will be the only 1-2-3-4-5-6 lineup of the time and date that most of us are ever likely to see.

brotherS, trust me this has not been forgotten! I have been on a very large project with work for the last several months that has finally ended for me. I'm right now in the middle of an app conversion from VB to Delphi for work. Once I get this done, I have full intentions of picking this back up!  I'm sorry it has taken so long.
That's great news! :)

I thought you might have gone fishing... ;)

I'd consider buying a halfkeyboard from http://www.matias.ca...rd/index.php?refID=7 if it just were cheap(er)!

What for are you using RegEx together with RSS feeds?
