I read this post yesterday and breathed a sigh of relief because my Firefox wasn't affected. 8)

Then sometime later in the day I had to reboot and Firefox updated itself and lost my extensions. :'(

Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia
Trollhunters.jpg

It's one of those "magical creatures actually exist in the modern world and the kids need to keep it a secret from everybody else" type shows. While it is ostensibly geared towards children, it's actually really clever with a decent plot and plenty of humor that should keep even the adults entertained.

It features the voice talent of the late Anton Yelchin as the main character. Anton's untimely death happened after just a few episodes into the final season had been recorded, but Emile Hirsch did a good job as a replacement; I didn't notice the difference. (My wife did, but didn't point it out to me until we had finished the series.)

It's good, clean fun for the whole family.

I currently have the Sennheiser RS 185 RF Wireless Headphone System and a Blue Yeti.  The headphones are good enough to roam the entire house with the added benefit that I don't have to remember to mute when I walk away as the mic doesn't travel with me.  But it's good enough to be heard in my whole office even when I'm at one of my other computers or the whiteboard.

Wow, those look very nice! I wish I had $500 to spend on headphones and a microphone. :D

Maybe I'll go for one of the lower model Blue microphones, such as the Snowball iCE and just use my CozyPhones. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

That's strange... mine only uses one port, whether wired or wireless.

https://smile.amazon...phone/dp/B003VANOFY/

That third image shows the dongle; when it's connected for charging, you only use the one cable still and get the sound also. (Note that the prices have gone up a lot seemingly since they're hard to find; I paid nowhere near that price).

I don't use that anymore; since most of mine use is seated at a PC, and I don't need to speak when getting up, I got a good pair of wireless monitors and a separate desktop mic.  The stand for my monitors also charges, so I don't have worries about keeping it charged.

Ah, I see you have the Logitech G930.

Logitech G930.jpg

Technically that's still 2 ports. It's just that the charging cable comes with a mini, 1-port USB hub for the dongle. :D

I also have the Logitech G930 headset. But it frequently disconnects and reconnects, even though the dongle is a mere 2-3 feet away, with an unobstructed line of sight. And every time it does that (which can be every few seconds), it seems to forget that the microphone should be muted while it's in the up position. And the battery has bit the dust, so I'm basically tethered to my desk anyway because it only lasts a minute or two when it's not plugged into the charging cable. And, like mouser said, the pleather earphone covers have been disintegrating for the past couple of years, covering the area around my ears, and my clothes and chair, in tiny black flakes.

For these reasons I've been on the lookout for something different, and I'm hesitant to trust Logitech after every one of my recent purchases (keyboards, mice, headsets) from them has failed (or begun to fail) within only about 2 years.

I'd be interested in seeing links to and/or info about your wireless monitors and desktop mic.

I ended up getting a Bluetooth headset from MonoPrice in February.

MonoPrice BT Headset.jpg

It works fine for audio (if you don't mind the seemingly unavoidable audio delay BT always entails), but the microphone doesn't seem to play nice with my system, which to the best of my understanding is on account of it being a Bluetooth device. But in addition to that, I just find it very uncomfortable--painful to wear, even.

So I think the MonoPrice headset was a bust, and I'm usually very pleased with MonoPrice branded things. Maybe that's because I usually stick to just buying cables from them. But these are so bad that I almost never use them.

In the meantime, I've been using the Original Sleep Series CozyPhones when I need only earphones (so I'm on the lookout for a good desktop mic), and I've gone back to using my G930 when I need voice chat.

CozyPhones.jpg

The CozyPhones are pretty great. As advertised, you can even lay down (and sleep) while wearing them without much discomfort. I think the CozyPhones, paired with a good desktop mic, might be as close to my ideal solution as reality will allow. My only real complaint about them is that because the placement of the earphones is adjustable in the headband, they naturally tend to get pulled toward the back from repeated tugs on the cable. This means they need to be repositioned every so often. At first it was every few days, but as I became aware of the problem and have been more careful not to allow the cable to get tugged so much, it needs adjusting every few weeks (~1.5 months) for me now.

That said, their newer models appear to be more form-fitting and may have taken care of that issue.

This is a nice small usb stick I just plug in when I want to use the headset and it instantly connects, no muss no fuss.  Unplug the usb stick to disconnect.

Can you use it wired with just the power cable? Or do you need 2 USB ports, one for the wireless dongle, and one for the charging cable?

Wireless is nice when you need to get up and move away from your PC, but I use my headset 99%+ of the time while seated at my PC and hate the inevitable connectivity issues that occur with wireless headsets.

Brave just launched their Brave Ads, so now you can get paid in BAT for watching Ads which respect your time and your privacy.

Starting today [April 24, 2019], users of Brave’s latest release of the desktop browser for macOS, Windows, and Linux can choose to view privacy-preserving Brave Ads by opting into Brave Rewards. These users will receive 70% of the ad revenue share as a reward for their attention, which they can auto-contribute to publishers under default settings. Brave’s platform is a new path toward a better Internet, where users can browse the web, earn rewards, and support their favorite content creators while preserving their privacy.

[...]

[Brave Ads are] Opt-in: Users who choose to see Brave Ads are presented with offers in the form of notifications as they browse the web, at a time that the browser finds appropriate and not disruptive. When users click to engage with these notifications, they’re presented with a full page ad in a new ad tab. Users can also customize how many ads they would like to see.

[...]

Brave Ads are launching today in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, and the U.K. More geographies will be available soon. Brave Ads will be integrated in Brave’s Android and iOS apps in the coming months.

EDIT: I was given the opportunity to view an ad for the first time about 10 minutes ago. Now the Brave Rewards dashboard shows my estimated earnings at 0.05 BAT (~$0.02 USD). I'm gonna be so rich!  :P

I've used woof a few times now, and I'm pretty happy with how it works for me. Super simple to install, no configuration necessary, and a simple command handles everything to transfer the files I need.

You see, it's practically impossible to make my website abide by the new EU GDPR without annoying my websites visitors.
-The Code Queryer (April 19, 2019, 10:37 AM)

That's the only practical outcome I've seen from GDPR.

Hence, have decided to block all EU visitors altogether.
-The Code Queryer (April 19, 2019, 10:37 AM)

And that's the only logical choice for "small fry" to make. (And even some of the bigger companies have made that choice as well!) Aside from ignoring GDPR altogether and hoping you're too small to be noticed by the regulators.

I didn't know hidden pinging in links like that was a thing! Worrisome that all the major vendors are enabling it by default, with no way to disable it! :'(

But there is some good news for folks who use Firefox or Brave:

Going forward, if privacy is important to you and you want to reduce the risk of being tracked online, then you will need to use Firefox or Brave.

DC Gamer Club / Assassin's Creed Unity free for a week
« Last post by Deozaan on April 18, 2019, 10:54 AM »
In support of Notre Dame, which was badly damaged in a fire earlier this week, Ubisoft is giving away Assassin's Creed Unity, which prominently features the cathedral, for a week on their Uplay store.

They've also pledged to donate €500,000 to help rebuild Notre Dame.

As the smoke clears on the events that unfolded on Monday at the Notre-Dame de Paris, we stand in solidarité with our fellow Parisians and everyone around the world moved by the devastation the fire caused. Notre-Dame is an integral part of Paris, a city to which we are deeply connected. Seeing the monument in peril like this affected us all.

In light of Monday's events, we will be donating €500,000 to help with the restoration and reconstruction of the Cathedral. We encourage all of you who are interested to donate as well. In addition, we want to give everyone the chance to experience the majesty and beauty of Notre-Dame the best way we know how. For one week, we will be giving Assassin's Creed Unity away free on PC, for anyone who wants to enjoy it. You can download it now for Uplay PC here: http://assassinscree...com/unity-notredame/

When we created Assassin's Creed Unity, we developed an even closer connection with this incredible city and its landmarks – one of the most notable elements of the game was the extraordinary recreation of Notre-Dame.

Video games can enable us to explore places in ways we never could have otherwise imagined. We hope, with this small gesture, we can provide everyone an opportunity to appreciate our virtual homage to this monumental piece of architecture.

In the meantime, I found out about another option that I think I'll have to give a try: Woof.

$ sudo apt install woof
$ woof ./somefile.txt
Now serving on http://192.168.0.117:8080/

Looks like it's built using Go. I'm not sure I have the proper access/authority to run Go services on my host.
1071
And it's down again for me.

It never works when I need it.  >:(
1072
I second WinMerge if you only want to compare the contents of two files/folders (and subfolders). It may not be as nice as some of the other options listed, but it's free and it is good enough for a comparison now and then.

I also suggest you change this thread's subject to something more helpful. Something which would give people who are browsing the forums the idea that they should read this thread if they're looking for a way to compare two folders.
1073
Google Chrome has built-in ad blocking?
1074
When it is working, Malwarebytes prevents me from going to it with a Trojan warning.

That's because it's a file hosting site. So somebody probably uploaded malware to it at some point in the past and it got flagged by Malwarebytes.
1075
Yeah. The site was working for me yesterday. But today I actually tried to use it and it failed. :(

Actually, I just tried again and it seems to be working for me now.
