General Software Discussion / Re: XYplorer ends Lifetime License
« Last post by rgdot on December 23, 2012, 10:27 PM »
Not really different than what I am saying. Lifetime carries a risk that is not really dependent on 12 years ago or today. Lifetime is always a limiter of upgrades, 12 years ago or not.
For example if you want to account for economic conditions for how you license your software then be ready to ride out recessions when you see benefits in growth times.

Not trying to be argumentative , just presenting a viewpoint.

That angle would be plausible if/when you are making a pricing change, if you want to say there is not as big a market for lifetime licenses.

If someone asks me I would say something not sustainable now wasn't sustainable 12 years ago either. Not my place to question it just saying not a fan of these kind of these decisions. No offense meant to anybody :)

The NRA laid a trap for themselves. The way the NRA guy talked was like video games are not ok but the actual physical device is ok and more of it is needed too.
Once upon a time the argument was both are dangerous and bad...

If you check this Dan.
After years of on and off looking and using the lite version it's probably time to go for the pro one. Not to sound cheap ( :-[  ) but there is an ongoing promotion over at BdJ http://www.bitsdujou...m/software/vueminder should I go for it or by chance there is another bigger discount coming in the near future?

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox CPU usage
« Last post by rgdot on December 21, 2012, 11:30 AM »
Firefox high CPU and RAM usage is as old as the internet  ;) Every version promises improvements, to me the closest thing that comes close to helping is blocking flash as that seems to one of the biggest culprits.

Alternatives haven't made much of a difference to me.

When I got interviewed for a physical newspaper they took my picture and content to them is money, in fact that's the only thing they have to make money.
Devil's advocate here but all these services, your stuff is their only 'income'. Just because they may use your picture as backgrounds in their ads doesn't change it all that much.

The only white screen I have seen using laptops is connector (or power) related. Flaky connection to LCD. If at boot could mean a power draw it can't handle.

From said article

Bing...we can confirm that it works perfectly well for looking at all kinds of explicit images.

Whose job was it to confirm that?  :P

General Software Discussion / Re: General brainstorming for Note-taking software
« Last post by rgdot on December 12, 2012, 05:10 PM »
tranglos says (somewhere on DC) that he finds it necessary to have the hierarchical tree, that (from memory) he's uncomfortable leaving organisation solely to tags.  I'm not sure.  I don't use tags religiously and wouldn't want a system that enforced them, but I do sometimes add words to a note so it contains the form of words I'm most likely to use myself.

That is why tags are 'ok' for personal use not for something blog posts. You may be able to train your own mind to make tags intuitive and meaningful for you. I find I use them sometimes but I think the best approach is to make the title of a node, note, etc. meaningful and give clues as to contents. One thing I like about All My Organizer for example is that you can see previews of child nodes/'folders' contents when a parent is selected. I believe Evernote is the same (?)

« Last post by rgdot on December 11, 2012, 02:08 PM »
If you are going to cede to Apple as the innovator successful then MS has little or no choice. The problem though is this ... making out the computer user to be some homogenous group. Someone who is sitting behind a desk using (never mind developing) the next version of Autodesk software has little in common with someone churning out 100 instagram pics a day.

I knew that but reason I never tried it was the attached PS/2, USB cables. Don't ask why I would think those can be damaged while the keyboard itself would not...
