It's a polyrhythmic sort of thing like you'd hear in the Thelonius Monk Quartet and some of those other old bebop bands.

In fact he led off with Monk's Played Twice.  I enjoy the Jazz concerts they do at MDC here especially because they are usually about 70 minutes long.  I don't feel like I am sitting in the seat too long.  I like to get there 1/2 hour early as it is so that I can sit on the end of the row that has a nice spot to park my suitcase.  No worries about it getting in the way.  But back to the rhythms, they were "getting in my body" as Miles used to say.  It was almost work because I had two wrists and one foot going to different rhythms.  I definitely felt involved in the experience.

All I can think of is google is providing hosting to these guys?

Their domain name is registered with Realtime Register in the Netherlands, and their IP is on a block owned by (RIPE Network Coordination Centre) a provider in Amsterdam ... That don't sound like Google to me. Also the code in the error message page is nowhere near fancy/nosey enough to be Googles, it looks kinda mom & pop-ish to me.

Then I have no clue why they would say google did not like their 32 bit exe and had to host it on MajorGeeks.  I don't think I'll run the installer for the 32 bit one.  Just something wicked this way may come if I do.  :)

Adam Nussbaum played at a free concert at MDC Wednesday. I don't know the technical drumming term for his style. But he plays many different off beat rhythms mixed together. The solos were shorter and more varied than expected. The composition of his he played that I liked most was "Hey Pretty Baby." He said it was inspired by the old time blues men. A funky bass line with vamping by the other players. Not your basic walking blues. It sounded quite original.

Edit:  I am not a musician so terms may be defined differently by people who know what they are talking about.  Kind of like the automobile side view mirror thing.  You get an idea what I mean but it is probably distorted.  :)

I don't know what is going on if Google has the power to blacklist individual files.  Seems peculiar.

BlackBird's site does not appear to be hosted by Google.
I do not (read never) use Google's DNS.
Google was not used to search for the program.
Google was not a referrer for the page request.
Google did not have Jack Shit to do with anything even vaguely tangentially related to the electronic communication between me an BB's website ... So if Google managed to block that download we have some epically Orwellian Big Brother class serious shit hitting the fan.

(That was fun) But seriously, I don't think Google is involved in the errors we're getting.

All I can think of is google is providing hosting to these guys?  I know every time somebody sends an email to Hawk Host that one of my programs got a red flag or 2 out of 60+ malware scanners they pull the file first and ask me about it later.

I tried the MajorGeeks download link for the x64 version of Blackbird just now and the Miami Dade Public Library blocked it as "a known malware site."

Looks like more trouble than it is worth.  But I have the feeling it is going to end up like the certificate crap.  If the $100 or $200 payment clears, then all your software is certified malware free all of a sudden.

I seem to be running out of Joe Haldeman.  He is supposed to have authored some 60 odd novels.  But what is convenient to get out of the public library is drying up.

I am trying another scifi author Elizabeth Moon.

Error 503, seems strange that it serves up the virus page though - web host AV software flagged it as a virus perhaps?

I don't know.  In their text it says something about "Google not liking the 32 bit version" so it had to be hosted on MajorGeeks.  Maybe they will have to host the 64 bit version there also?  I don't know what is going on if Google has the power to blacklist individual files.  Seems peculiar.

I posted a question/comment on Facebook but I don't use it often enough to have any idea if there will be a meaningful response.  :)

In fact I think it is my first post.  I just got it for quickie login to sites I don't want to formally join.

So after looking at all these excellent recommendations, something like this looks like a good bet too (assuming your "in" includes "on")...

I used the BlackBird link you posted above to go to their page, used their download latest version link to get to their download page, and then clicked their Download Blackbird V6 link. Which resulted in the above error.

You know what though, if Blackbird does system tricks to protect your system it may be seen as a malware.

That was my first thought as well, until I tried the download ... That's not a Windows error message - and nothing on my system is in Russian (or whatever language that is). So I'm thinking it's coming - odd as it may seem - from their end.

I don't remember getting anything like this.  It seems like the network itself is sticking this page in.  The web just get weirder all the time.

Really strange.  I don't remember Start64 having weird links like that.  Perhaps some where you click the product and it is not linked to the page.  You know what though, if Blackbird does system tricks to protect your system it may be seen as a malware.  It could be similar to the 32 bit Snadboxie that patched the kernel in memory.  I believe Sandboxie got flagged quite often until the author registered it as a false positive or whatever he did to get if off the blacklists.

Edit:  I am getting that same virus blocked screen even in Opera 12.x.  It must be getting flagged right on the backbone or something?  Weird.

I noticed Blackbird on Start64.  I am just curious if anyone is using it and, if so, what are your impressions?

I have the feeling it uses Windows Update to update, which would be a deal breaker for me right there.  But I am curious.

Right now I am running without RollbackRX.  The system just seems smoother without it.  Otherwise I would be more inclined to stick it on and see what happens.  :)

Maybe I'll fish around and see if I can wangle a free government issue smart phone or something similar.  :)

I'd send you one, (I've got two I don't use here, both have FM), but it'd be sans battery - AusPost do not accept Li-Ion batteries in parcels.

A suggestion: There's usually phone/electronics recyclers somewhere, ask there.

I haven't had much luck with FM around here.  Which is kind of strange since I can walk to the source of WLRN radio in about 5 minutes.  Out of 5 radios tried I think I got WLRN for about 5 minutes when there was an education(the LRN in WLRN) issue being discussed.  Never when there was jazz being played.

Even trying to listen to Eric Jackson on WBUR in Boston streaming never seems to work.  All I can listen to are podcasts of old shows for some reason I cannot fathom.   Anyway another reason I was thinking of getting a smart phone was to program apps for them.  The Desktop ago of Dos/Windows is over.  So I need to either switch to Linux, program devices or some combination.

It is very frustrating when I cannot even keep up on the jazz that is on the air free for everyone else.  There used to be an FM station that played classical during the day and jazz 7 nights a week.  I used to scratch down the names of tunes in the middle of the night when I heard something good.  The main jazz DJ was there 30 years.  I don't think he wanted to retire so they sold the station out from under him.  I think they stopped broadcasting but I am not sure.  Strange to buy a radio station to not broadcast but maybe it was some billionaire who hates jazz?  :)

Living Room / Touchy touch screen rubs me the wrong way
« Last post by MilesAhead on February 10, 2016, 05:53 PM »
After a lot of web searching I found an MP3/FM radio with 8GB storage for less than $40.  So I was very curious how it would go when I picked it up from Walmart today.  I have never owned or used any touch screen type of device.

After today's experience I feel my worst fears were justified.  I got the thing to play a few mp3 tunes.  Didn't sound bad.  But the touch screen business drove me crazy.  I could not try the FM radio because instead of just disabling the Bluetooth automatically it pops up a message I have to do it.  But it won't let me.  Scrolling of files in a folder as well as settings jumps all over.  As soon as you take your thumb off the screen the scrolled list of files starts to scroll back in the opposite direction.  After about 15 minutes or more of fiddling I got the Bluetooth setting back to Off.  But the setting will not "stick."  No matter what I do it stays set to "on."  I even tried resetting factory settings.  That did not work.

Nearly all the user reviews for this player were  very positive except for the note that the screen seems to require an abnormal amount of pressure to "click" it and that there is a time lag.

In my case I think the touchscreen software was corrupted as I could get it to do almost nothing.  Pressing the menus at the top did nothing at all.  I guess I am still in the market for something with more than 4 GB storage to play my tunes.  Maybe I'll fish around and see if I can wangle a free government issue smart phone or something similar.  :)

Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so that will give me an excuse to get more treats to eat while I am at Walmart returning the item.  :)

I guess I didn't need to fill out that security thingie.  It only shows the space I have used in Drive.  While going through the various info pages for my account one pane had the sentence (paraphrased as I could not find it again) "Everyone in MyMDC.net can use unlimited storage."  Apparently they sold schools some free software that comes with sky is the limit online storage.. or something.  There was an article in PCMag in 2014

I don't have a Google Drive account but I scan the giveaway sites and noticed this one:
http://sharewareonsale.com/

It makes me think they sell 17GB for 99 cents?  But the giveaway gives it free?  Seems weird.  I suppose I could go through the process and see what happens.  17GB is enough to put a few files on.  :)

$0.99? For a free Google Account? Methinks that site is just adding a price so people jump at the chance to get something for free.

Heh heh.  Like those guys who sell stuff out of the trunks of their cars.  I remember one time I guy I worked with wanted to get a backgammon board from one of these guys because it had a price tag of $19 and the guy was only asking $8.  Of course the same board in the department store sold for about $8.  :)

Btw my school email is hosted on google so all I had to do was hit the Apps Menu and click Drive.  One thing good about chrome I can just drag and drop file folders to upload.  Unlike FF.

A little late, but if you are interested in a GUI solution, XYplorerFree (freeware -- http://www.xyplorer.com/free.php) has it. Just drag (with right mouse button) a folder(s) anywhere and select "Create Branch(es) Here" to replicate the directory structure(s) without the files. (No control over the levels though.)

As a side note I have seen the Pro version on giveaway lately.  I installed it a couple of weeks ago from a promotional download.  But I notice it continues to pop up now and then on the giveaway sites.

Since I got rid of my roll-around toolbox and its contents years ago(to discourage me from accepting yet another job as a mechanic) if I bought a new car the most important items in my emergency kit would be:

a) charged cell phone
b) charged debit card
c) jazz tunes to listen to while waiting for the service vehicle to arrive.  :)

Keybase gives 10GB to everyone.

I am no math expert.  What is the name of a billion times a GB?  If they give 10GB/person and there are 7 billion people then it is 1024 * 1024 * 1000000000 * 7 bytes of free storage.  That is one hell of a big USB stick.  :)

Microsoft was crying about giving OneDrive users 15 GB.  This keybase is going to have a directory for everyone in the world.  Roughly 7 billion people.  So every byte ends up costing them somewhere between 6 and 7 GB of storage.   Ouch.  That's a lot of disk farm to air condition!

I meant that in the same tongue in cheek manner as the rest of this thread, especially as there are macs vs vi battles all over (I fall more or less firmly on the emacs side)

I suspected something may be a foot.  I handled that one badly but I don't know any of the affectionate insults hurled at Emacs.  :)  Other than the curious occasional boot I haven't done much Linux in quite some time.  :D  If I could have gotten some of this vhd boot stuff to work on my Laptop it may be been otherwise.  The boot mechanism seems to be severely restricted on this particular machine.

Edit:  Although I did hear that for voice input editing to work in Emacs you have to speak with a Lisp.  :)
