That's funny. I was actually thinking of 'buying' it for $10 or $20, not because I need it, but because it just seemed rather cool of him to do that! I'm guessing that he's bang on the money there for getting the 'underdog vote/buy'.

That's a very cool little utility! :D

This is my 2003 Server box at home:

Windows-Install-Date-Time-Up-Renegade.png

Not 4 years, but it's never had anything except the original install.

I've had 1 problem the entire time - the graphics card crapped out in 1 output so I can only use 1 monitor with the box until I replace it.

The machine runs 24/7 and is only ever rebooted for updates or if I'm going to do any audio recording, then I reboot (usually).

General Software Discussion / Re: What are Your Top Tech/Software Podcasts?
« Last post by Renegade on October 29, 2007, 02:17 AM »
I've always liked the magazine Maximum PC, and I almost always find their podcast entertaining.

http://feeds.feedbur...r.com/maximumpc/1337

At first glance there I thought, "WTF are you smoking?" Then realized that I was thinking of Maxim magazine and not "Maximum PC". :)

I suppose that I could imagine ways for Maxim to come up with a podcast... I just don't know how you'd encode pictures of big-breasted women in skimpy bikinis into an audio format??? Guess you'd need some LSD to help out there...  :tease:

For Cranky Geeks, I've never listened to it, but I like John on TWiT. I'll have to give that a spin too.

Thanks to the suggestions here (IT Conversations ROCKS!) I'm sooooo full with content that I won't be running out anytime soon and I'll have to prune out those that don't deliver the content quickly or are just lower quality. I think Digg Nation may go as it is seems to be mostly 'entertainment' and not more than just for fun. (Only heard 2 or 3 shows so far though.) I'm not really looking for 'entertainment' type stuff.

Again, thanks for the links!

I picked up a cheap watch at Narita airport last year on my way to the US. It was quite plain but had all the numbers in traditional Chinese, and was very attractive. Unfortunately the cheap band gave out and finally broke. I haven't replaced it so my 'watch' is now my phone, a Samsung SPH v9900:

Now isn't that much prettier? :D

Living Room / 8 Hour MP3
« Last post by Renegade on October 28, 2007, 09:45 PM »
So I've got a fellow with a feature request that stems from his having some very long MP3s - one is 8 hours long! (The direct download is here.)

It's pretty good at that too. :)

I've got some 1 & 2 hour MP3s (e.g. ASOT), but 8 hours is just off the hook.

Kind of makes me wonder a bit about the future of media and what kind of stuff we'll be seeing in the future. e.g. I get a lot of information from podcasts on my commute. Our behaviour patterns are seriously changing a LOT thanks in no small part to advances in technology and all the new gadgets that come with it.

Now I want my hovercar, holodeck, replicator (ST, not SG ;) ), Cherry 2000 (  :o ) and a Death Star to top it off would be nice.

If they keep up the development, it would make perhaps the best open source language ever since the entire fun behind it is to have fun source code that you'd want to show off.

Don't be so sure that just because you sign up at a site that they are spamming you or selling your email address to spammers.

I've got a domain with 1 email address. I have NEVER used the email address except at that site and it's not publicly available unless you sign up, in which case you get an email from it. But even before 1 person had signed up, I was getting spam through that address.

One of the most common ways (and indeed the best way) to gather email addresses is through bots on a computer. Once you've got an infected client, you search through their email client for addresses. All these addresses (mostly) are guaranteed to be real people or at least live addresses. You don't need to clean them either, e.g. removing 'dontspamme' from [email protected].

In short, if you use an email address, you WILL get spam because the people you send email to will eventually expose your address to spammers. It's only a matter of how long it is before you start getting spam.

Ok - enough of that - here's a brain fart...

Imagine an experiment where several people sign up for domain names then get email addresses at them. The email addresses are obviously not in any spam list if chosen properly, e.g. [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and others like those are obviously already going to be spammed. But '[email protected]' or '[email protected]' are unlikely to be in that list. So... Everyone emails each other at least once, an perhaps uses an automatic program to send everyone in the experiment an email once a month (or whatever). How long is it before those addresses start getting spam? Can you track the source? Does everyone use a different email address for everyone else and the server uses forwarding to help track it, e.g. mouser has '[email protected]' to send email to me, but Ralf Maximus has something like '[email protected]' to send email to me.

Too much trouble to setup really, but it would be interesting to know.

Living Room / Re: Password Cracking Made Easy Thanks to the GPU
« Last post by Renegade on October 26, 2007, 08:36 PM »
Ralf asked and then answered the real question - "Where is this important?" It's not for password cracking. It's for non-parallel and distributed computing for things like he mentioned, DNA sequencing, etc.

For example, it would be very useful for all the gamer Star Trek fans that donate CPU to SETI to find aliens.

If SETI is on course to find ET inside of 100 years, this could cut it down to 4~10 years. Now wouldn't you rather be invaded within your lifetime?

Ergo, the answer is that this new technology is best suited, and perhaps even designed to help intergalactic slavers invade planet Earth and sell humans into either slavery on distant planets, or to setup new restaurants that charge exhorbitant prices with humans as a special delicacy on the menu.

See how easy that was? ;)

...
In practice however, and this is the thing i am really starting to feel strongly about and really starting to understand the import of, I just don't have the time or energy to learn someone else's code just so i can fix something or add a small feature.

In practice, i'd be much happier being part of a user base that can provide enough financial support to the project so that the developers can spend their time working on and providing support for the project.  In terms of cost-benefit analysis, my time is much better spent coding on my own projects and supporting these developers with a little money.

Amen!

For server/web software, I have a strong preference for open source (commercial or otherwise) because it guarantees me a degree of insurance in case I really *need* to get in and start coding. However, this is rare, and really only an insurance policy for me. Web server software often needs to work in cooperation with other stuff - that's my reasoning there. And one of the major reasons I really like DotNetNuke.

For desktop apps - I really could care less if it's open source or not - as long as it does what I need.

I wish the devs would fix the huge memory leaks in FF, its the only reason I ever restart FF (that and adding an AddOn).

Has anyone here licensed WMA DRM for playback from MS?

Not for encoding or anything like that. Just playback, and maybe tag editing.

I'm looking for some clarification there regarding the 9/9.5 and 11 licenses.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Living Room / Re: The worst thing about Macs
« Last post by Renegade on October 20, 2007, 01:28 AM »
Wow - got a lot going on here since I've had time to post...

The zealotry thing will never go away. There are zealots everywhere, but I think that we can mostly agree that it is the zealotry that pisses us off, and not the object of the zealotry. We all know that the Mac/OSX (object) has more zealots than the PC (object).

The same goes for Firefox in a reduced manner. My Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera rant is here. Just like the Mac zealots, the Firefox zealots drive me nuts.

I certainly don't mind hard facts that can be clearly illustrated. Blind statements with little support are annoying.

Ok - Let me jump off at this point and become a zealot for anti-zealotry. ;)

*** CAUTION - ZEALOTRY TO FOLLOW!!! ***

Whether it's an OS, a browser, or a particular piece of software, or a religion, or a political party or whatever... The object (tool) serves a purpose/function. An OS lets you run software. A browser lets you surf the web. A religion lets you communicate with g/God. A political party lets you decide how you get butt-pirated... Etc.

Inside of any of those functions there are specific things that need to be done. Different tools will perform different tasks with varying degrees of effectiveness or efficiency or style. How efficiency, effectiveness, style or *insert property/function here* ranks inside of a priority list varies by individual.

If you want to encode audio/video, Joe Blow encoder may suffice, but if you're doing it for DVD production, you're going to use something from a company like Sonic or Avid, otherwise you're an idiot - plain and simple. The priority for DVD production isn't encoder price or ease - it's quality all the way, and there are only so many products that will satisfy that requirement. Conversely, if you're making a home made DVD that you're giving as a present to your friend for their birthday and buy a $100,000 system to do it, you're also an idiot. Nobody goes rabbit hunting with nuclear missiles.

Choosing a tool for a job will depend on those priorities. Choosing the wrong tool given a set of priorities is simply a mistake. e.g. You don't use MS Excel to create documents. You don't use MS Word for spreadsheets. You don't use Photoshop for an image viewer.

It is ONLY when a task and tool are VERY simple that you can definitively say, "X is superior to Y." I have a swiss army knife, a kitchen knife, and a sword. Simple tools. I need to cut some carrots. Simple task. For that task, the kitchen knife is clearly the superior tool. Period. No debate.

Web surfing... So many things to do there... So many complex tasks... So many different aspects to it... Not a simple thing. IE vs. FF. vs. Opera vs. Netscape vs. Safari vs. *insert browser here*... There is no clear winner. There is ONLY what I prioritize as important. (As in the link to my rant above.)

I value mouse gestures for navigation very highly as I use them all the time. I value speed. I use Opera primarily. It's not a "right" or "wrong" decision - it is what it is. I'm close to switching back to IE for some reasons that I outline briefly here. If mouse gestures aren't important to you, then that just doesn't make sense for you.

Imposing one's priorities on another is most often insane. A graphic designer needs Photoshop. But when the graphic designer forces *computer illiterate friend* to use Photoshop to resize photos to print out and put on the fridge, that's just stupid.

A similar thing goes on with the Mac zealots. They berate others for having different priorities or making a different choice.

I'm hungry. I think I'll have a pear. Does it make me an idiot because I didn't choose *insert favorite food here*?

The zealots are begging for the rest of us to make fun of their insanity. I don't think anyone needs to apologize for berating zealots for that. They're asking for it.

On the other side, it is hypocritical to berate the object of the zealotry because of the zealots. That doesn't make sense. However, we still do this. I think its more often in jest or as "bait" for the zealots - just to piss them off and lure them into being the funny extremists that we love to make fun of. It's really kind of cruel. It's not very rational. But then again, the rational thing to do when you're dealing with someone that isn't rational is to become irrational yourself. (Yes - ironically strange but true, that is the best argumentation tactic.)

The problem I see is when you actuall mean something or believe something when you become irrational with the zealots. I'm all for making fun of Macs or whatever else - heck - it's all just a fun game. The zealots aren't going to sway me, but I can get some twisted fun out of the whole thing. It is in some ways rather perverse as there is nothing to be gained.

The defining characteristic is irrationality - it's just hard to pass up stomping on it. :D

Oh heck... I'm just rambling on and on... Time to shut up.

Most people that I know that have Macs know how to... Wait a second! They don't know how to do anything on a computer!  :(

Ok - truthfully - most people that I know that have Macs know how to use a Word processor, email, surf, play music/movies and look at pictures. Not much more. I am not kidding. Really. Honestly. Ok - maybe a couple of them can crop pictures on a Mac or resize them. With help.  ;)

I don't know if I know anyone that uses Windows. Windows users don't wear their OS on their sleeves and trumpet it out at every chance they have, so I may not know any Windows users. :D

Living Room / Re: Interesting...50x Faster Than BitTorrent
« Last post by Renegade on October 17, 2007, 09:05 AM »
Excuse me as *coughbullshitcough* I clear my *ahembullshitahem* throat.

50x is not possible. He's claiming 50x faster than Bittorrent at DVD quality. Not possible through a protocol.

Assume that you've got connection and bandwidth parity - remember, we're talking about the protocol here - for whatever he's talking about (Blin) and for BT. He is then saying that the bittorrent protocol adds in overhead that slows it down by 50x, comparatively. That's total BS.

You can't factor data compression in (as that doesn't talk about the protocol) because it's already video and audio compressed (if AC3 or DTS and not LPCM). Data compression doesn't significantly reduce the size of compressed audio or video in most cases. So data compression is out even if someone wants to try to factor it in - it's irrelevant. Remember... DVD quality... (Lossey compression degrades quality.)

What's left? Overhead? Nothing is that bad. You would have to TRY to make the protocol as horrible as possible. Only government is capable of doing something that badly. ;)

The ONLY thing that makes real sense is that in China fewer people use BT while many use the other program (Blin). More clients means more places to download from. THAT can result in faster speeds like 50x, but not a protocol.

Here's some simple math:

1 DVD = about 4GB (4,294,967,296 bytes)
Running time = about 2 hours
Download speed is then 596,523 bytes per second

Which is entirely believable (I get MSDN downloads at much faster speed than that), but it also says that BT speeds are then 11,930 bytes per second (as it's 50x slower), which is true in some cases, but it's not hard to get a few hundred thousand bytes per second with BT.

That the protocol is 50x faster is simply false.

That the Blin P2P network is much larger than the BT network in China is entirely believable. Those are VERY different things.

The losers are generally easy to pick out.

They can't type proper English to save their lives.
They ask obvious questions.
They ask extremely general questions.
They didn't read the article.
They ask for completed solutions.

I email them something useful if they work at it. I don't give candy coated solutions. I don't have time for that.

e.g. In this thread the guy wanted everything. It's a common enough request that I did a show for it (basically). That way I get to recycle my efforts and not have one person be ungrateful for doing a ton of work, which is often the case.
