Living Room / Re: The Dvorak Zine - fun comic telling story of the Dvorak keyboard

I'm almost convinced about making Caps Lock a backspace. Is it possible to do that without affecting the rest of the keyboard?

AutoHotKey!
I changed app key to Ctrl key once but never got any further with it
but I'm sure someone here might be able to help - would be a good way of just trying it out as well

Heres a search for "That Pesky CapsLock Key" :) looks like a few good possibilities there
http://www.google.de...amp;client=firefox-a

and it's true f0dder, there was a thread here lately about changing keys :-\ had a quick look but no find

IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection for Files ($42)[/b]
http://www-306.ibm.c...ous-data-protection/
.... it may not offer all the full/differential/incremental/zipped/encrypted options we are used to
ahhh,
I posted/quoted about that in the other synching thread - there's always another similar themed thread isnt there ;)

IBM's Tivoli Continuous Data Protection http://www-306.ibm.c...ous-data-protection/.
...
Be it Tivoli or Diskstation software....they both use the same approach....a real time data copy based on a set of rules.  So I tell it what files to copy (be it filename matches, filetype matches or folder matches) and as soon as I save a file which meets the criteria, it copies it to a backup.  It also can save multiple versions and target files require no special software to open.....meaning the files are not imaged but real file copies.  I prefer this real-time backup as opposed to a scheduled backup

Living Room / Re: Save the Earth! From evil parasitic power packs...
« Last post by tomos on November 12, 2007, 09:47 AM »
I'd say you'd have a market here in europe at any rate..

But those wee little black power bricks just piss me off.  Individually, they're nothing... but add together 10 or 15 of the beasties and you're talking about some serious current, all going to waste.

I read (somewhere :-\) a while back that,
if all the people in germany turned off everything that was on standby,
the energy spared would be equivalent to that produced by one nuclear power plant (average sized I presume!).
That's 80ish million people here, now how many there in the states...

I generally try to have those "blackbricks" on an extension lead with a switch...

Oh and I wish there was a cable modem with wake-on-lan... so it can turn itself off and then back on when you use it again.

Times I'd love to be able to turn off the dsl router but our incoming calls come through the internet connection -
this can be changed (would also have to be changed back) but it is a bit of a pain & the box is so bloody delicate I'd be afraid to plug things in or out too much..

it breaks almost every shortcut my computer has!

using english software on a german keyboard:
Z and Y are interchanged. Now that's a pain where you cant change shortcuts
When I've time I plan to check out the Colemak one more -
they have international versions as well

EDIT: no they dont:
Will there be versions of Colemak optimized for other languages?

I won't have time in the near future to work on that.

There's no proof you type faster/more accurate using Dvorak.
I think the main idea is it's easier on your hands..

In some years we'll all use computers the way Johnny Mnemonic did and won't need keyboards anymore.

soon as i saw it i thought of Neuromancer by the same author which i read in late eighties (hadnt read the Johnny Mnemonic one or seen the film..) - the internet has never lived up to it!

here's another one I came across in the comments (Lashiec's link)

Colemak
Colemak is a modern alternative to the QWERTY and Dvorak layouts.
It is designed for efficient and ergonomic touch typing in English.
... Colemak is now the 3rd most popular keyboard layout for touch typing in English, after QWERTY and Dvorak.

What's wrong with the Dvorak layout?

    * The main problem with Dvorak is that it's too difficult and frustrating to learn for existing QWERTY typists because it's so different from QWERTY. Colemak has been designed to be easy to learn.
    * Placing 'L' on the QWERTY 'P' position causes excessive strain on the right pinky. Colemak doesn't place frequent letters where the pinkies stretch.
    * 'F' is on the QWERTY 'Y' position which is a difficult stretch on normal keyboards.
    * 'I' is very frequent but isn't on the home position.
    * 'R' is very frequent but isn't on the home row.
    * It is significantly lopsided so that the right hand does too much work.
    * It's not comfortable to use Ctrl-Z/X/C/V shortcuts with the left hand while holding the mouse with the right hand. Colemak conserves those shortcuts in their QWERTY positions.
    * Even though the design principles are sound, the implementation isn't optimal because it was designed without the aid of computers.
    * 'L' and 'S' form a frequent same-finger digraph on the right pinky. Same-finger for the pinky is very rare in Colemak. In particular, Unix commands such as 'ls -l' are very uncomfortable to type.
    * Some punctuation (in particular the curly/square brackets) is less comfortable to type on Dvorak. This affects mainly programmers and advanced Unix users.

notice anything odd?

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to track the time you spend on each project
« Last post by tomos on November 11, 2007, 12:06 PM »
To help clarify what i'm interested in.. im more interested in properly billing people for time, rather than in figuring out what kinds of things i do on the computer.

have a look at SQL-Notes (Beta) e.g.
http://sqlnotes.wiki...es.com/Time+tracking
https://www.donation...32.msg84924#msg84924
http://www.sqlnotes.net/

I'm only getting to grips with it but certainly has lots of potential (I think, once i figure it all out..)

I'm more interested in something where i can quickly click on tray to say "i'm working on project X now" and then "i've stopped working on project X" etc.

Thanks! I'm asking because I didn't find that SFFS's delta backup technology accelerated my backups by that much, if any acceleration.

on my last computer I was using a usb1.1 connection sometimes -
partial file update made a BIG difference there :)
but also notice a speed difference with usb2

but I just have it running in the background anyways &
while I synch some big files, there's not many of them & I've never bothered timing them..

anyone here using this?

"Find And Run Robot" "Clipboard Help+Spell", "Drag and Drop Robot"

me,
i like the robot theme too
of the three there CH+S is the only one I'd change -
who want to sound...

like a German megaconglomerate (CH+S, AG) that specializes in making precision grommets for Mercedes.

(unless of course you actually make...)

from the surfulater archives :)

IBM's Tivoli Continuous Data Protection http://www-306.ibm.c...ous-data-protection/.  Note:  I DO work for IBM, so I get this software for free vs the $36 USD normal price.  If I had to pay for the Tivoli software, I'd likely just use the free software that came with my Diskstation....not because Tivoli software is lacking.....my impression is it is top notch but I am just cheap and typically lean towards freeware if available.

« Last post by tomos on November 09, 2007, 08:32 AM »
Surely some small utility that does this must exist.

or a BIG utility: Directory Opus :)

First just the file name is selected
Control+E selects just the extension
I think theres a shortcut to select name + ext
10341
[SFFS] still requires checking each file in the "monitored" hierarchy for changes, instead of using filesystem event notifications?

I believe so

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by tomos on November 09, 2007, 03:55 AM »
Think of it as:
1- a large spreadsheet. The grid is used to filters which row are displayed and which column is displayed, and/or
2- As a filing cabinet. You place items in folders (fields here). Selecting a field as a grid source, displays items in the folder (This is the Ecco Pro metaphor)

Hope this helps!

this is helpful

I've been struggling with the underlying concept
not having used database type software before is probably a handicap...

If I follow the logic and metaphor of point one -
lets see... using SQL-Notes, I dont understand (yet) how (exactly) you filter things so it's probably too soon to be asking questions -
but I'll have a go anyways :)

  • Would it be possible to filter one item+subitems (i.e. one of many items) for example from ToDo to another grid?
  • Is it possible to make new columns - I see there's a long list of them already.
  • Is it possible to open a new "spreadsheet" ?

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: My System - Index Card Centric
« Last post by tomos on November 07, 2007, 02:12 PM »
Instead i seem to mostly just organize things by project.

that's the way I've been generally thinking too
might give that a go myself - I did do project grouping before but didnt have proper homes for them...

When I did use cards by project, & then planning - say,
today & the next couple of days,
I enjoyed being able to lay all the "active" cards out on the rug & move them around a bit to help get an overview

Dont know whether that's a throwback to childhood or just my "visual" preferrences  :)
