Ok today I'm posting about a cheap gadget that I think everyone should have.
It's a battery-powered water/flood leak detector.

Screenshot - 12_28_2012 , 8_28_56 AM - cap 00116_thumb.png

I have two of these guys, one in the bathroom and one under the kitchen sink.

You put them on the floor and if water ever gets underneath them they let out the most piercing beeps.

Now if you're lucky you'll never have one of these guys go off on you because of a real problem, and only because you accidentally spill some water.

But they provide me with significant peace of mind when i fill up the tub, etc., that if something goes wrong I will at least have a change at being alerted to it before it's too late.

The brand I use is Zircon: http://www.amazon.co...teries/dp/B002Q8GRPG but have little reason to prefer one brand over another (these first alert ones also look good and are possibly easier to change batteries on).

General Software Discussion / Re: XYplorer ends Lifetime License
« Last post by mouser on December 24, 2012, 10:15 AM »
Well, say what you like, but this is being handled in a courteous and professional manner. Holders of previously purchased lifetime licenses are being grandfathered and there's at least a 30 day heads up to everyone visiting the website, giving potential purchasers the option to buy lifetime licenses and be grandfathered.

You can't ask for anything more than that and nothing to complain about.

As long as a company does not take away the lifetime upgrade rights promised to people who purchased it originally, then there is nothing whatsoever for anyone to be upset about.  And giving a window for new people to jump on the bandwagon before the lifetime stuff changes is even nicer.

I'm starting to get cranky in my old age and worrying about proliferation of script installations in terms of long term maintenance.
I'd love to see another map of Baby Cody's travels -- but isn't there some external service we can use for this -- or maybe just a map image that could be posted to the forum and updated occasionally?

I assume you have a spare sata drive you are also going to put into the pc -- if not i'd recommend you get a nice big sata as well.

I'm speaking as an observer and not someone who puts together machines, but one possible reason to *way* over-spec on power supplies, is that it's so damn hard to diagnose and correct a problem if it turns out that the problem is caused by an under-powered power supply since it could happen sporadically and is so hard to replace, etc.

One of my favorite cheap gadgets is a Swiffer Sweeper Vac:
swiffer.jpg

It's basically a really tiny, light, cheap, low powered battery-powered vacuum cleaner meant for very light duty work on solid (wood) floors.

It has a large flat head that fits disposable dry cloths on it. Each time you use it, you attach a new cloth which picks up dust.

My experience is that it's basically only useful for one thing, and that's cleaning up dust and cat hair from wood floors -- it's too low powered for anything else.  But at that one job, it is perfectly suited, and a pleasure to use.

Chris (creator of Plarker) focused all his efforts on his OpenMenu enterprise and I think he discontinued Plarker.
But I could be wrong..

Looks outstanding

Is memory really that damn cheap?  If so I'd recommend spending more on memory.  I'm sure there is a way to spend more -- either go up to 16gb or get "faster" ram.

I assure you, that configuration *will* work.

Hey this is a really neat idea!

May I offer a really really simple stupid suggestion? Show somewhere near the top of the panel the maximum allowed path size before problems occur in windows?  This might be useful to remind people when they should start getting worried.

Here's another one of my favorite "gadgets".  What it is is an indoor-faucet to garden hose adapter, plus a quick connect hose adapter, and then a short 6ft hose.

I find it extremely useful when filling up things like humidifier, etc.  Is also useful when you want to generate some higher pressure spray to wash something.  The quick connect thing let's me leave the adapter connected to the sink at all times and quickly attach and detach the hose when needed.

Just came across this nice page on diagnosing the "running out of virtual memory" issue on Windows XP, showing how to show virtual memory in the ctrl+alt+delete Windows Task Manager, which I never knew about:

I'd love to hear more about what makes the existing timers not quite good enough, and some idea of what were the main minimal features you are interested in.  As someone who has evaluated that many tools, I think it would be useful to hear what you think would be the ideal one.

While we are on the subject of cat waste, my gadget for this weekend is the Breeze Cat Litter System, which I was so taken with I wrote a mini-review of back in 2009.  I'm still using it.
