General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by tomos on December 05, 2007, 06:48 AM »
If I need to read the manual, then the user interface has not been optimally designed. Ideally, the interface should be completely transparent for a user familiar with the functional domain to which the software applies.
you can forget about DOpus then too...
in fairness when I got DOpus I wasnt "familiar with the functional domain to which the software applies"
but I still think you'd need to read a good bit in order to be really able to use the programme or to configure it (I havent used DOpus9 but certainly with 8 they could have made a lot of stuff a lot more accessible - on the other hand I think over 2 years it has easily repaid any time invested to figure it out)...

So if I schedule backup daily of all important files & folders, there really no sense in even running RAID-MIRROR?

am i correct in thinking the advantage of raid-mirror is that if your main drive goes you can work away with the other (do you have to physically swap the drives/connectors?)

Re drives:
having gone with 2 x 320GB drives
I wouldnt mind having three, :) a relatively small one for OS+programmes and two more
-
dont really understand the atttraction of fast drives if they need more fans/get very hot but then I've never used one.
(I mean I'd prefer quieter machine to shaving seconds...)
am considering something like a hotswap bay in the future (I only have the option to add one more drive i think..)

thanks justice

just seen your thread about it
ThreatFire - aka Cyberhawk - free behavioural blocking

yes Avira antivir does seem like very good value and gets very good test results what I've seen,
used to use the free one a few years ago..
10255
Threatfire sounds interesting justice - is that free or paid version?
I see paid version has "AntiVirus engine with signature updates"
http://www.threatfire.com/download/ (with free/paid comparison)

also curious :):
are you using the free version of antivir? - reason i ask is..
as far as i know the unpaid doesnt check incoming mail?

This one might be more user friendly? Prob good to read both..

as a tea drinking snob i object to coffee and tea being lumped together.
i think they should be separated.

I only need two cups a day, but if I dont get them people think I havent had any sleep the previous night.
Good irish tea (they grow it on the misty mountain slopes - no, actually they blend it from indian & african teas i think. ah well..)
drink with milk

or when abroad (in cafe, etc) a good strong cup of assam. ahh, it's great to enjoy legal drugs

General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis True Image OR maybe not ???
« Last post by tomos on November 30, 2007, 07:15 AM »
tomos - can't you just set up a scheduled job (at the bottom of the window) but rather than schetting a schedule time just choose run manually later and then when you want to run it you just click on the job and hit run ?
Yes,
I'll try that-
that's what I was thinking here
solution might be to schedule a backup, deactivate it and then reactivate it manually when required ?

to give it a bit of context:-
I was posting after reading in the other thread about "bored programmers" at Acronis adding bits & pieces..
and was thinking here's something they can sort out/make more user friendly.
It's minor but when you're using the programme for the first time it's a pain to have to dig so much to figure this basic stuff out

I must say I'm fairly disappointed with True Image's interface -

the thread about new Acronis Workstation got me looking at this again

this Post is either a complaint or I simply havent figured out this programme yet :-\

if I do a manual backup:
actually I'm just after doing one, was overdue :)

and I counted:-
After opening the programme
I have to go through TWELVE panes before clicking on the final "Proceed"
Excluding files that were previously excluded: FOUR clicks for each file, more if not previously excluded
"Settings" - I have to set each time, there's ELEVEN "pages" of those in the settings tree to be adjusted.
There's no obvious way to save all this for the next manual backup (incremental).

In fairness I've only skimmed the help file.
If this possibility is there, well and good, but they could make it a bit more obvious

If it isnt there, all i can say is WTF  :tellme:

it's possible the solution might be to schedule a backup, deactivate it and then reactivate it manually when required ?
I havent scheduled anything cause I prefer doing it manually (but not because of all that above :P)

well I'm certainly getting places,
but no success with the chosen file for some reason
ignore the first few lines :-[
bitmaprip01.png

the file is two scanned (A4) images
they arent very high resolution, not sure how file was made (could find out tomorrow)

I did try using "PDF Image Extraction Wizard" (trial) software earlier -
it was able to extract the images but reduced them to half their width (kept same height though )
I've gotten round it by taking screenshots of the maps but would like to figure this out all the same if possible
At least it found the correct file and windows found it so I've learned quite a bit for an IT-analphabetic as Curt says.

:) also, thanks for your patience Marko

hmm..

cd "\program files\bitmaprip"
gives the message -
cant find "cd"

could this be a problem with my relatively fresh windows install.. :-\
indexing is turned off; search works okay;
help is turned off in services too I think, cant think of anything else that might be relevant.

This is the first time I've tried to run anything "non-windows" from command line -
windows stuff seem okay (regedit, perfmon.msc, etc)

You need to change to the folder where you unzipped/put the bitmaprip.exe file.
So, assumed that you unzipped the package in a c:\bitmaprip folder, you need to do something:

sorry Marko,
I'm not fully clear there -
should I move it to c:\bitmaprip ?
(I would prefer to have it in a programme folder of sorts but wont loose any sleep over it :))

If I have it
C:\Program files\bitmaprip\

Should I type:-
CD Program files\bitmaprip bitmaprip F:\TIFFs\ASI\ASI_CorkVol5\MAP0100.pdf

or
because of the space, with "*" (or '*')
CD "Program files\bitmaprip" bitmaprip F:\TIFFs\ASI\ASI_CorkVol5\MAP0100.pdf

First, the bitmaprip files are in
C:\Program files\bitmaprip\

I never use command line stuff so maybe I'm doing something wrong:
Win+R
then type:
bitmaprip MAP0100.pdf

I get the message:
---------------------------
bitmaprip
---------------------------
Windows cannot find 'bitmaprip'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

or, for
F:\TIFFs\ASI\ASI_CorkVol5>bitmaprip MAP0100.pdf
which is - the parent folder>etc filename
I get:

Windows cannot find 'F:\TIFFs\ASI\ASI_CorkVol5>bitmaprip'. etc

PS thanks for quick response!

for a diplomatic/studied response (also very critical - from the comments to same article in nontroppos last post)

http://commentisfree....html#comment-941965

There is another strawman that floats in this same area: the notion that homeopathy treats the whole patient instead of narrowly defined diseases as recognised by conventional medicine. It shouldn't bother them that the study gives them a pool of similar patients. The homeopath only needs to define ahead of time what they would regard as being a measure of a successful outcome
...
The homeopaths' requirement for individualisation and 'holism' is no obstacle to trialling.
...
Mr MaqcEoin should find us a 'rational' homeopath who can answer for all of these problems.
-
I have quite a basic understanding of homeopathy,
yet off the top of my head I can think of a few possible "scenarios" for clinical trials that could take into account the different approach of homeopathy.
Which begs the question why arent these happening or being organised...
(no smart answers to that one please :P)

Tomos : your black swan image is nice, but it doesn’t say much without any contextualization. What proposition are we trying to refute here : “all swans are white” ? “most swans are white” ? etc.  In the same manner, if there should be any meaningful debate about homeopathy, evolution, etc., it should always be about precise aspects, and IMO it should be backed up with serious studies (preferably multiple) ..

eh,
I think you got me and the black swan out of context there Amando -
I didnt say anything about a white swan :) or a black one either... :D

The first couple of paragraphs and the last probably contain what you feel is offensive.
true, designed to put off any one with any homeopathic sympathies
WHY put an article in an offensive sandwich???

Someone said in an earlier post it would be nice if there was more debate
I say simply:
this article will not encourage any debate.
He says it is not an attack.
The Lancet article, if you have read it, is not an attack - it is a model article - brief, succinct, referenced, to the point.
The Guardian article unfortunately is an attack.

First sentence:
"There are some aspects of quackery that are harmless - childish even - and there are some that are very serious indeed."
nontroppo -
imagine if someone said something like that about your career for example or something you believe in?
Maybe you are the type to smile nonchonantly but most people arent - they get their backup

I am not defending homeopathy or attacking this facts quoted in this article.
(so there's no need to argue them with me at any rate)
I am simply saying he is damaging his own case if he really wants to get talking to the homeopathic community
