Living Room / Re: Favorite TV Episode???
« Last post by nosh on March 13, 2008, 06:39 PM »
Probably the Buffy episode where she and Angel (or was it Xander?) get possessed into reenacting a tragic scene where a guy had killed his girlfriend.

Perhaps it's a corrupted pagefile. Disable paging, run without one for a while and see if the errors persist. If they stop you'll know it's not a hardware issue and could enable it & get a fresh pagefile.

Here's a nice FF extension I came across today.

Fission incorporates the navigation info (that you usually see in the status bar) into the address bar so you can see it all in one spot.

It modifies the Firefox address bar to show load progress in the background using a color or a texture (any image).

Fission.jpg

It can optionally:
Move the normal progress bar to the right of the address bar.
Show the connection status in the address bar (depicted in screenshot)
Display links you hover over in the address bar.

3. My mother.

2. A friend of a friend who sent an email to the address [name]attheratehotmaildotcom.

1. A girl in an accountant's office I once apprenticed in - this is during the Win 3.1 era when mice were relatively new - she holds a ball mouse in the air and waves it around... "Why isn't anything happening??!"

True. Everytime I see yet another "new/unique/groundbreaking" web service I say a little prayer for the "idiot "angel investors" behind it.

The craze will hopefully pass sometime
Not as long as there's this little thing called "greed" - everyone wants to win the Teh Intraweb Sweepstakes™!

I hear you but don't blame you at all. The problem I face is info-overload and forcing myself to let go.
There's just too much to do and too few hours to do it in - I've had to unsubscribe from several interesting blog feeds, for instance - there just isn't enough time to go through everything. I have even forced myself to stop upgrading software that I'm happy with. I don't know how to describe the feeling, it's just a slow-kill kind of frustration, there's a constant conflict between the perfectionist within who wants to do everything to the last detail and the pragmatist who is (by definition, smarter) but weaker who's feebly trying to let go. I probably sound completely insane so I'll just stop. :)

Nothing special really, Darwin - Like D, I just followed those little horizontal guidelines at the side of each box for max top/bottom limits. I used a black permanent marker, BTW.

Thank you Gothi[c], mouser & anyone else who helped get the site back up again.
Firefox had started giving me those "What? You don't love me so much anymore?" looks.

Call me adventurous but my room is always painted a matte white! If it's good enough for most ICUs, it's good enough for me!  :P

Thanks tomos, I'll be sure to check it out - from my initial inquiries at the shops today, the newer red/GT ones cost three times as much as the regular ones so I'm fairly certain of buying the latter. Neither are in stock so I'll probably have to wait a couple of days anyway.

Thanks for the link. I'll obviously take your word on the speed difference since you own both but here's something interesting I read in another review...

The red Flash Voyager GT that landed on my desk was pretty much the same as the blue Flash Voyager that was sent to me in February. If you can find yourself a blue regular Flash Voyager manufactured toward the end of 2006 you might get lucky as you will be paying the price for a regular Flash Voyager, but actually getting a Flash Voyager GT!

Was reading a review about it in another tab as you posted. I'm trying to figure out how the GT makes it different - not paying more just coz it's red. It does look better but still - red and black with a _yellow_ company logo & a _blue_ LED? :'( This thing is more colorful than Richard Simmons!

Thanks everyone!

I was thinking along the lines of Kingston/Transcend/Sandisk but after reading Lashiec's links & some online reviews I've decided on the Corsair Flash Voyager 8 GB (some interesting links to flash storage info on their home page.)
[external review]
It has excellent ratings everywhere I've looked & seems to be ahead of most on both speed and durability. They also have a 10 year warranty, which is twice the norm. As Tinjaw mentioned, the actual warranty period is not significant these days but it does say a lot about the manufacturer's confidence in their product. The only thing that sucks about it is the ghastly blue! Methinks it's well worth a slight premium. :)

PS: I rarely lose things which is strange coz I'm very absent-minded. Before I installed a security software on my phone I used to have a startup note identifying me as a member of the police force. :P

I'm probably picking up an 8GB pen drive tomorrow. Should I be looking for anything besides a good manufacturer? Or are they all plain vanilla - "one does no more or no less than the next"?

Hank, they have a rather large manual but it's a quick read. :)

Xplorer² lets you sort on multiple columns very easily. Just sort on the first column as usual and shift-click more column headers to sort further.

Edit: You can save the sort order on a per-folder basis.

Anyone know if SP3 carries IE7 as:
1. An optional component
2. An IE6 upgrade/replacement or
3. A mandatory install side-by-side with IE6?

Check out this thread.

Even if it disobeys the "stop on error" you should be left with a crashdump to analyze

Clutter & a lack of organization - on and off the PC.

The "on PC" stuff has mostly been taken care of but there are some cupboards/shelves that really need to be taken care of and I've been in some serious denial and have chosen to look the other way for well... years! I know I'd be better off if I just put my mind to it one weekend and got it sorted out but that hasn't happened yet.  :(

Also, I've got into this horrible habit of holding onto my old PC hardware, just can't digest the fact that I'll be getting like .05% of the value back if I sell it and don't have a completely functional PC that I can donate.

No more pampering the stupid CPU. I don't expect it to burn out but if it does - great! I'll have no option but to go for a dual (or quad) core then! :)

btw. this is not the best place to make suggestions.

Sorry, I'm lazy!  :-[

Maybe popup window for that list?
Yes, a popup window. Do take a look at FileTracer which does this. Ava Find shows the changed files & recently launched files panes.
