General Software Discussion / extract data from pdf
« Last post by kalos on October 02, 2012, 04:37 PM »
hello!

pdf manipulation is really cumbersome, but I really need to do the following:

- identify text blocks (editable or not), tables, photos, etc (draw a rectangular around them)
- extract them in their original size (for photos) or take a screenshot of them in the best possible resolution

how can I do these?

thanks!

does it try to close (forcely) the window, or it kills its parent process?

I am trying to re-get acquainted with latest linux (due to some ankyloses at work)

does that pain to install a single app still exists? compiling, getting dependencies, etc?

I hoped that it would become someday easy to install software in linux, like in winxp, but I saw so many people in the linux community that seemed they were excited with such long install procedures, so I gave up

VMWare and such are very slow

my solution would be to utilize live cd's, but without running them from a cd player, which makes them sluggish

is there a virtual cd player that can load a live cd?

I'm surprised QemuPuppy didn't work for you.

It's been awhile since I tried it but it is the most thought free Linux OS I've ever tried.

No knowledge required. Not even what resources to cut when a virtualized window is open. Just copy paste to usb and click like a regular portable app.

it sounds very nice

however I need ubuntu
basically, I wont to run some linux programs, which I know they run in ubuntu
if I can be sure they will run the same way in QemuPuppy, it would be fine!

I tried that, but it wants me to have at least 20GB free, which I dont :/

Just because it says it wants 20GB doesn't mean you have to give it 20GB.  Did you try it with a smaller amount?

but I can only give it 1GB, will it work?

@40hz
thanks for the great info! btw, is there a ready to deploy usb ubuntu image file to just extract it to a usb and make it work?
UPDATE: unfortunately this requires me to boot from USB stick
isnt there a way to have it in a usb stick and run it from there while I am on winxp?

hello!

I want to have a linux OS on my winxp, without a boot live cd or something, just as I run a portable app or it would still be ok if I have to install it

it must be 100% functional and I should be able to install and work with any linux app

any hint?

thanks!

hello!

at lab, there is an ubuntu pc that many people use
I am logged in and when I physically leave, I just lock the screen (that means I am still logged in, right?)

the question is, can I have access to that pc from my home pc?
preferably without anyone can see it

thanks!

General Software Discussion / learning programming
« Last post by kalos on August 31, 2012, 06:35 PM »
hello!

I have difficulties learning programming, although I have written various autohotkey scripts myself

just now, I found this website:

http://www.programmingbasics.org/
http://www.programmi.../gettingstarted.html

I think it is what I was needing! it is brilliant and excellent!

it explains programming without any prerequisites

my question is: is it complete/enough? are there any general programming concepts not been covered?

thanks!
