The big drawback to .NET is people won't try your program if they have to install yet another framework.  It tends to make you use what you figure most people already have on like .NET 2.x features.

That might have been a consideration at one point... but that point is pretty far gone.  You can plan on .NET 4 at least currently (and that's what I code to).

+1

I'd go further though. I'd actively discourage people from using 2.0.

.NET 2.0 was just .NET 2.0, but later on MS split .NET into the .NET client profile and .NET full profile.

The problem there is that if you used some methods in .NET 2.0, they might not be in the client profile, and may require the full profile, making them no longer forward compatible for practical purposes for users who don't know the difference.

.NET 4.0 won't run on XP, but, sigh... something has to be sacrificed somewhere... :(

(Tangent: It's one reason I thought Warehouse 13 was brilliant in concept, because the people mostly stayed people, and it's the objects that wandered around and did strange (and usually dangerous) stuff. )

The original was the "Friday the 13th" show.

http://en.wikipedia....the_13th:_The_Series

Warehouse 13 just rehashed the same thing. (Most good stories do that.)
The people concepts tend to be pretty simple.

True...however...

Where would you classify characters like the modern Batman and Iron Man? Wayne and Stark are both normal humans. Perhaps a lot more technologically sophisticated and wealthy than most people. But their 'super' powers derive mainly from the technology and powered bodysuits they employ. If they have any super power it's their high IQs.

Or Doc Savage? His powers derive mainly from a physical and mental developmental training program that started when he was conceived. No super anything with Doc. The implication is he's just a more 'realized' human potential. And that what he is, you could be too.

Where do these characters fit into the general superhero continuum?

Check the GURPS or Palladium or Heroes RPG systems. They work very well. :)

Many other systems also have the same situation.

I think I'd like a polar bear with shape shifting, mimic, transferal possession, and a specialization in snake style kung-fu. Oh, and for psionics, we'll go with mind trap and bio-manipulation.

In the Palladium world... that's just friggin' SICK! :D A TMNT martial artist with super-powers? Yeah... move over... :P

Sigh... haven't played in many years now, but I sure as heck know how to game the system and make the most disgustingly powerful characters you've ever seen. :P ;D

But just think of these characters in terms of some gaming systems or worlds.

Call of Cthulhu anyone?

There are 3 systems where it doesn't matter what your character is:

1) Call of Cthulhu - they all go mad & die
2) Paranoia - they all die
3) kill puppies for satan - uh, yeah... they die too

:D

Movies are little different. With numbering from above:

1) All horror movies
2) All sci-fi horror movies
3) All comedy horror movies

:P

I decided to give out $0.10 USD worth of Bitcoin to anybody who uses ktbyte.com:
  • (Optional) Try our free intro CS class on a desktop / laptop
  • Make an account and login
  • Click the check button after listening to any lecture (or solve a problem). The shortest lecture is the intro. Should take you less than 10 seconds.
  • Go to https://www.ktbyte.c.../progress#freegoodie and send me the redirected url (or paste it below), and I'll send you your bits using changetip!

IIRC, you need GTK# and not GTK. I think 2.12.25 is the current version. But you do need to install GTK# as well. I've not used it in a bit, but last I did, it was a separate install.

I've uploaded MonoDevelop v3.0.5 for you here:

http://cynic.me/Mono...evelop-3.0.5.msi.zip

Let me know when you've downloaded it so that I can remove it.

That should work in XP.

I have a few Mono DMGs for OS X as well if you need, but they're all at least 2 years old. v3.0.3.2 is the most recent that I have.

Sometimes, and only sometimes, I forget the 80s.  Thanks Renegade.  DA reminds me of AMQA:

Hahaha! Good stuff!

But times have changed since the 80s...

The album this song is from may just well put the rapper in prison for life:

Now, some of you may be thinking that the music is so bad, that a life sentence is gentle, but c'mon... let's not be haters. :P

No, instead he's facing life simply for publishing the album. Really.

Anyone missing the 80s yet?

Could you please elaborate on this topic? How do you make cross-platform apps on C#?

As mouser said, Mono. Make sure to use MonoDevelop or Xamarin Studio though. (I'd say go for MonoDevelop -- save Xamarin Studio for when you're making the big buck$.) EDIT - Xamarin Studio is the proper release now. They have free functionality in it, etc. etc.

The GTK# toolkit is actually pretty good.

I put out one very simple program using it here:

http://cynic.me/2012...-linux-and-mac-os-x/

Source code is all there, so you can check it out in a nice, simple and easy application.

It's very different than Winforms, but once you get used to it, it's ok.

That being said, the concepts of gravity and some other things in there are a bit bizarre at first, especially coming from some other toolkits.

I've tried to use Qt, but it's simply so horrible to get working in .NET that I'd rather cut my eyeballs out with a steam shovel.

But, do get MonoDevelop Xamarin Studio and play around. The Mono team is really good, and you can actually chat with them on IRC. (But don't pester them with things that you can search for and look up on your own - they're too busy to answer questions that have been answered 1000 times.)

Seals are mysteriously sexually assaulting penguins — and eating them (warning: graphical and NSFW). Interesting read.

While all of these attacks resulted in penguin injury, in perhaps the most horrific case, the seal gave up copulating with the penguin after 826 anguishing minutes in order to kill and eat the poor creature.

I want the "Beer Goggles" app!

Dude... Stop being such a lazy bum and just brew your own! :P

Been wanting to do that for ages actually!  :D

It's very easy. You can start with sugar, baker's yeast, and flavouring. That's not the best, but it works and is a worthwhile experiment. I posted a crappy recipe here.

Not really music videos, but interviews with the lead singer of my absolute favourite band, bar none, with some really good insightful comments on music if you have the patience to listen.

Great comment here about supporting local live music:

And just for the heck of it, a 1988 news piece:

My absolute #1 favourite song to play on the guitar (when I'm completely plastered drunk) is "Proud to be Canadian".   (Also the only tune I can play hammered. :P )

That tune is just 1,000% insanely fun!

And now, for a seriously just badass tune that is just stupid fun:

Also a really fun tune to play. :)

They put on a great concert with truckload of energy.

Very droll, thanks. The only comment I could suggest is the quote:
"You didn't make that!"
 ;)

(Note that even though I quoted you, IanB, this isn't necessarily meant as a direct reply to you. The quote was just to give context to what I'm blabbering on about.)

It's a satire on the mindset of people who--especially with the anonymity of the internet--claim someone else's work as their own. There's a difference between saying "Isn't this cool?" and not attributing the proper source, and saying "Look at this cool thing I made." Claiming other people's work as your own is just inexplicable.

And full disclosure just in case it wasn't clear: I didn't actually make that image. I was just playing along with the joke. ;)

I think @IainB made a subtle reference there that you missed. Probably best to PM for what it is. ;) But it was simply hilarious!

This entire thread:

http://stackoverflow...best-programmer-joke

I'll post a few.

Q: How do you tell an introverted computer scientist from an extroverted computer scientist?

A: An extroverted computer scientist looks at your shoes when he talks to you.

A SQL query goes into a bar, walks up to two tables and asks, "Can I join you?"

Q: how many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: none, that's a hardware problem

Jesus and Satan have an argument as to who is the better programmer. This goes on for a few hours until they come to an agreement to hold a contest with God as the judge. They set themselves before their computers and begin. They type furiously, lines of code streaming up the screen, for several hours straight.

Seconds before the end of the competition, a bolt of lightning strikes, taking out the electricity. Moments later, the power is restored, and God announces that the contest is over. He asks Satan to show his work. Visibly upset, Satan cries and says, “I have nothing. I lost it all when the power went out.”

“Very well,” says God, “let us see if Jesus has fared any better.”

Jesus presses a key, and the screen comes to life in vivid display, the voices of an angelic choir pour forth from the speakers.

Satan is astonished. He stutters, “B-b-but how?! I lost everything, yet Jesus’ program is intact! How did he do it?”

God chuckles, “Everybody knows… Jesus saves.”
