Thanks, good job skrommel!

A tiny requests for version 1.1: please add the according range to the Transparency and Dim speed fields. Now one has no idea what values are allowed.

[Edit]
Another idea: what about excluding DimSaver.scr from the "ScreenSavers" list?

And how do I start the screensaver from another AHK script?
runwait, c:\winnt\system32\DimSaver.scr, c:\winnt\system32\, hide
isn't working...

It might be nice for you to add a few comments, for what purposes you made it, how to use it, etc. etc. :)

 But shouldn't this request be moved to CodingSnacks? I haven't found it if brotherS hadn't informed me.
It didn't start out as a typical CodingSnack request, I moved it now :)

I'm looking forward to test it - you just need to actually put it on https://www.donation...om/Software/Skrommel for me to do so! :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Do you use RSS feeds?
« Last post by brotherS on April 07, 2006, 12:46 PM »
There are a few forums I want to keep track of, so obviously rss feeds are good for that.  The thing I didn't like was that rss feeds don't actually give the whole thread or information, they just give a few lines of the whole thread.  Is this true for all rss feeds?
Yes!

To get the whole feed, you still have to go to the actual website, whether that is supported inside the actual application or using your regular web browser.  Right?  So, basically, I get a taste of the thread, but I still have to go the website to read the whole thing.  That didn't do much for me.  I'd rather be able to have the complete threads from all the forums come into the application where I can read all of them in their entireity in one place.  Was it my setup that was wrong, or is this really how rss feeds work?
RSS feeds can't work the way you suggest, that would defeat the purpose of RSS. While RSS is often translated to "Really Simple Syndication" you want "Really Not A Simple Syndication"...
;)

Many pages contain images, video content, ads (they need to refinance their sites somehow) or articles are spread over more than one page only (I wonder how those newspaper style readers handle those), so it would mean LOTS of bandwith to transfer EVERYTHING when the typical RSS feed reader is only interested in a few % of the feed items.

Living Room / Re: Firm pitches $2,800 64GB USB Flash disk
« Last post by brotherS on April 07, 2006, 12:34 PM »
True but there must be a physical limit on what can be crammed into a Flash disk - and I don't think 64Gb is going to be topped for a while!
-Carol Haynes (April 07, 2006, 10:19 AM)
That's why I said "by the time the product dies (average lifespan, average customer), it will cost the company virtually nothing to replace it for you" Should it die 3 years from now, they just send you $50 to get a new one. :)

a further limitation is the fact that flash memory has a finite number of erase-write cycles (most commercially available EEPROM products are guaranteed to withstand 10^6 programming cycles,)

How can companies (eg. Lexar) offer no quibble lifetime warranties on their Pro products if the item has a limited lifespan?
-Carol Haynes (April 07, 2006, 08:48 AM)
That's easy: by the time the product dies (average lifespan, average customer), it will cost the company virtually nothing to replace it for you - and most will have moved to better and bigger products anyway.

If you now buy a 512 MB USB stick, you'll probably laugh about its size in 3 years - long before it stopps working.

Good lord!

I'd be afraid to leave my house with it!

Luckly it looks like it would be the perfect size: just small enough to fit in my tightly clenched fist, what better way to NEVER loose it....
;D ;D

In case you fear a giant devil rabbit may attack you a clenched fist might not be enough... maybe a tight, stainless steel chain around your neck is better? But make sure it's no Kensington lock!

[...]fear provoked by the attentions of a monstrous, allotment-menacing devil rabbit.

That's according to the Times, which reports that the "Beast of Felton" - a deer-sized, black and brown creature with "diabolically shaped ears" - has already decimated "a market stall's worth of Japanese onions, parsnips and spring carrots".

The first sighting of the Mephistophelean herbivore came back in February. Allotment holder Jeff Smith, 63, recounted: "This is no ordinary rabbit. We are dealing with a monster. It's absolutely massive.

I think that the response to both posts could be a script that you set as screensaver, and that can do all you mentioned.
You can copy powerdimmer's executable twice, each one with different options (for day and night), and the script would run each of them.
Thanks, that got me thinking... one surely could do that OR one could code an AHK script based on A_TimeIdlePhysical that would just start one of the predefined powerdimmer copies based on the current time!

Did you ever try something like that?

runwait, c:\winnt\system32\powerdimmer.scr, c:\winnt\system32\, hide

only brings up the config dialog, it doesn't actually start the screensaver...

And keep in mind: We never have won!
I think DC is winning again and again and again! :D

Thanks for the poem!

JoTo, Thanks for the poem and the effort it took to produce it.  May I suggest a small amendment?  Replace the word "men" with "men and women."  It would make many of us feel much more included. :-*
While that certainly would be 'more right' it would also kill the flow of the poem... :-[

the thing i don't like about the auto cursor jump method is that i often don't want to click the button that is in focus. so, i have to check to see where the cursor has jumped to and also spot the button i actually want to click AND then after that i move the cursor back to the area of the screen i was clicking around - i wouldn't call the 'cursor jump' method the most efficient and i'm sure there must be micro seconds lost where you have to become reorientated as to where the cursor has gone and what you are meant to be clicking on.
I can't share that feeling. You actually get a very good feeling over time about where it will place the cursor and it's actually faster, not slower. I actually had several people thanking me for making them use it long enough to 'see the light'.

it may be microseconds to do all this moving around but it's a massive irritation to me.
Yeah, it's an irritation for sure, but only in the first few days. Been there, done that... :)

i'll turn the auto move cursor thing on for a bit and see if i can get used to it.
Great! I found mostly those resisting change of any kind can't (or won't try long enough to) get used to it (you know, people still living without CDs, DVDs, Internet, ...), so there's a good chance you'll make it!
:)

May the force be with you :D

i know, i know. there are methods for the mouse to jump to the button that is in focus but i really can't stand that way of working. it still requires me moving my attention away from where my cursor originally was and then moving it back again. and, i don't want this to work with all windows so i wouldn't want the cursor jumping around all over the screen every time a new button comes into focus.
Too bad...  :( I love that feature!

Btw, 92.4% of all people do - if you just force them to use it for one week to give them a chance to get used to it :D

Good luck with your request, I'm sure someone will come up with a solution!

Thanks for the info, sounds good!

Maybe you should consider renaming "Movie Collector" to "DVD Collector" then, and "Photo Collector" to "Photo and Movie Files Collector"? Might be more obvious then.

Discussion about PowerDimmer's current flaws and maybe a new, better one:
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3095.0
1044
Hi,

in https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1998.0 LuckMan212 told us about PowerDimmer (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/powerdimmer/). While it is working pretty good, it has several flaws:
  • it doesn't always react on key presses
  • it disables itself even when no key is pressed, for example when another app brings up a new window or popup.

Also, it would be especially cool for such a screensaver to allow different dimming settings for day and night - dimming to the same level makes it now hard to recognize the dimmed screen content at day when it's perfectly set for night use.

So, is anyone here up for the task?

Living Room / Re: BitTorrent - why bother?

Is cFosSpeed built into Azureus or is it one of the plugins? If it's a plugin, where can I find it?
I added the URL in f0dder's post above.

I went to the Azureus wiki and changed my settings according to their Good Settings wiki page. It suggested I put my upload throttle at about 19k, which immediately destroyed my browsing. Downloading torrents doesn't seem to be affected by my upload speed, but browsing the internet does. So I've got it reduced to 10k and it seems to be working well. I'm not downloading anything right now, so I can't tell if my download rates have improved, but at least my upload is twice as much as before. That should help keep my share ratio higher.
Then your ISP probably isn't *really* giving you the speed you are paying for or you are using cable. The AutoSpeed plugin could be interesting for you then. Use the built-in IRC plugin to ask for more help if needed.

Azureus =  :up:

It places two windows in the upper right corner of your desktop, covering the autohidden taskbar if it is on top, or as I use it, on the right.

[...]

Now if only there was a way to protect the scroll bar, too, with the taskbar on the right...
Try to move the taskbar to the left side of the desktop - I love it!

http://calcr.com/

Web site calcr offers users a very simple but useful online calculator.

As you perform your calculations, calcr dynamically creates a tape that tracks each calculation. Calcr can handle parenthetical expressions like (3+2)*5 and can also support several functions (e.g., abs, sin, cos, tan, asin, acos, etc.). In all, calcr is a quick, easy, and elegant online calculator.

Found on http://www.lifehacke...ith-calcr-164360.php

I like it - now I just have to remember another URL :D
