General Software Discussion / Re: Just discovered a HUGE annoyance in Windows 7
« Last post by cmpm on January 18, 2010, 09:23 AM »
I really didn't have problems, except for loading incompatible programs, and playing around with things I knew nothing about on the OS. Which was just to experiment.

All my data files are on my seagate 640gb external, tranglos is dealing with internal drives that has data, I'm quite sure.

With a custom install, which I did, w7 doesn't try to migrate xp anything into w7. It archives it into a file called windows.old. So it's a clean install, and windows.old can be deleted.

A safe way to turn off Windows Defender if you want to-

Open it in the control panel-
Go to options.
Uncheck
Automatic Scan
Real time Protection
every box in Advanced
every box in Administrator

This will stop Windows Defender without removing it.
Windows Defender could be causing trouble.

-edit-

Gizmo must be reading this, lol....

btw, it took 3 installs on my desktop and two on my laptop to get it right

I screwed up some things and had to reinstall, but I learned a couple of things I hope.

lol...yeah, I know how it is.....
with xp it would take a day to be ready for anything (within reason)
and be up and running quickly after a format and install

Perhaps partition 100gb or so, and put W7 on it, keeping XP.
Rebooting will want to go to W7, unless you choose the 'old version of windows' as it states on bootup. Kind of cocky with their own old OS!

Then when your ready, run W7, perhaps leave it up while you are away so it can update. Check the screensaver and power settings to your liking. They were not right on both my laptop and desktop at first.

One more thing, any third party software should be investigated before using it with W7. Outpost has some incompatibility issues I saw in a google search. Don't know for sure why.

Let W7 run with it's own security for a while till it's updated. I received numerous compatibility updates after the install. Give it a few days to adjust I'd think.

Something's screwy on the install of W7.

A few questions....

Why would a language bar come up without an office program?
Did you update any drivers through windows update-
ie-device manager-right click-update drivers.
Video controllers and ide controllers and network cards.
Are you running as admin? Even then sometimes I have to right click and choose 'run as admin'.

It would be smart I think to disconnect any drives that you are not installing W7 on, then reconnect.

W7 works best to use a password to logon, a requirement for some things to work right.

Also is this an upgrade W7 dvd? Then you have to have vista or xp already on the drive and working. The install options will let you do a clean install by choosing custom install. It will save your old version as windows.old.

And as xp it may take a bit to get the auto updates, or you can run windows update manually through the control panel where it has it's own update program, it's also in the start menu. But that will not cover all your hardware like via device manager. Stay away from third party driver updaters for now as well. Unless you have to, like I did for some things on the laptop. amd/ati needs too much attention.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ready Boost?

Does ebooster disable windows built in Superfetch?
Also the limits of Vista are removed in W7 (which is really a Vista overhaul) from what I read.
Of course anything can be said on the net.

I had to disable UAC a couple of times for it to work.
Reset UAC to it's default, reboot, then disable and reboot.
Programs installed with UAC enabled will cause the problems I think.
Even after UAC is disabled, might require a reinstall as admin.

Or dropping the UAC default setting down one notch will stop the dimming of the screen, and not allowing any other things to be accessed.

I disabled UAC cause Synergy is killed when the UAC prompt is engaged, mainly....
+I really don't like UAC at all, except that it would show changes made to your computer in the details, if expanded. I suppose that's for compatibility and stability.

General Software Discussion / Re: Ready Boost?
« Last post by cmpm on January 17, 2010, 09:30 AM »
ReadyBoost is built into Windows 7. Inserting a usb stick will trigger the option to use the stick for Ready Boost if the stick can be used for it, which mine can. Perhaps there are some usb sticks specifically designed for Ready Boost, I don't know.

This SanDisk 4gb stick works with W7's built in Ready Boost option.
Is there another type of usb type booster for W7?
I don't know.

as a side note-
Intel Turbo Memory driver will not work with this laptop.

http://downloadcente...ntel+turbo+memory%22

Most report not much gain from it anyway.
I don't have the proper options in the bios for it to install.
It's an amd computer and not intel AHCI capable.

http://downloadmirro...18011/eng/readme.txt

Anyway, at this point Ready Boost on this stick is helping.
It's set to write caching, for better performance.
I don't know of any other settings or tweaks to speed it up.

It's doing ok for an amd 1.8 with ati graphics though.
Just slower then my desktop, by a good margin.
The desktop specs are much higher though.

General Software Discussion / Ready Boost?
« Last post by cmpm on January 16, 2010, 07:32 PM »
Does ReadyBoost actually help?

I've looked it up, and found stats saying it helps if your memory is at 1gb.
2gb and up they say it doesn't help much at all.

Anyway, I have a single core amd sempron1.8 laptop with 1gb of ram.
And a 4gb usb stick, which I dedicated to readyboost. Running Windows 7.

It seems to help with speed and less delays on opening programs.
The default sounds were even delayed a bit, which was kind of funny.
But better with readyboost.

This is not my primary computer so I'm not intending to buy more ram for it.
Just wondering what you think and your experience with readyboost performance.

Thanks.

I liked that little dude, used it with XP, and forgot about it after going with W7.

Thanks for reminding me, it works fine, although I didn't explore it full potential. I just used for quick access to folders of programs and mail, sites, and some specific programs. It is cool.

Will have to try on 7 and see if it complains any.

Are they all using there own software or what?
Seems that there should be choices.
If not it could get outdated quick.
If better readers can't be used or alternates.
Whatever software one prefers.

I don't mean to sound like you don't know any suggestion out here.

But have you unplugged your router and modem and let them reset, takes a minute or two. The settings are still saved, but they seem to get fubar for some reason, especially with security products.

The paid version of Malwarebytes is the full time protection, or at least always on. And it has an ip blocker that can be enabled and on all the time. It will notify of what they have determined to be a bad address trying to connect.

I would run the sophos rootkit detector-free.
Look for anything you don't recognize as legit.
Random letters with alternating capital letters,
like 4 or 5 maybe more. maybe all lower case too.

And I know about the files for amd and i386 have that,
but this will look different.

http://www.sophos.co...os-anti-rootkit.html

I had 2 ips following me around. Malwarebytes blocked them but I couldn't find the cause after scanning with every gun I could, till I came across Sophos rootkit.

And I tried the other rootkit detectors but nothing showed itself to me like Sophos did. Smitfraud, combofix, others-no help at all.

@4wd
Maybe it's an update.
Heard about the one for MS Office that's supposed to do something.
It was about that lawsuit settlement.

Also if you have an ip blocker like Malewarebytes has,
enable it, sounds like something following you on the net.

Living Room / Re: How can we market Donationcoder.com better in 2010?
« Last post by cmpm on December 31, 2009, 05:58 PM »
I think 'market' is not what zridling is thinking of, in it's commercial world, which DC is not a commercial project.
A community think tank sort of to me.....

A definition of terms would be useful, but his ideas are what is more 'marketable'.
Word of mouth is always the best and the internet is that means.
the way it's worded or spoken of is the key I think.

anyway, zridling, 'marketing' used in a commercial sense is kind of funny to me, seeing your posts and shoot, using Linux for pete's sake!
I get what you are saying.....more involvement would be a good term...

I had to update the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers after upgrading to w7.
I didn't have those symptoms but I was checking all my drivers anyway.
Right click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and click upgrade,
let it search ms.
And ms/w7's choice of video adapter driver was poor.
Went to the manufacturer's site to upgrade it.

Yes, too small, I know.
I think they will get bigger.
Not necessarily this brand either.
More talk and competition will bring it around.
