I hope she is doing well. It looks like her best apps were created a several years ago.

Unfortunately, she died back in 2011.  :(

I had the same need, for the same reason, and wanted to supply my ISP with a log of all the disconnects. When I asked here on the forum, Karenware 'Net Monitor was suggested, and it did exactly what I needed.

Brand new book from Sitepoint/Learnable (I think it was released Saturday Wednesday):

Jump Start HTML 5 Basics - If you already have an understanding of HTML, this book is intended to give you a crash course in HTML 5, teaching you the basics in about a weekend. You can preview a sample chapter for free.

Canning or barrelling? :D

Canning...unless you know a lot of people that want to buy a loaf of my yummy pumpkin bread, because once I open a barrel, I'd have to use it all.

Thank you!  :)

In my very state, Montclair State University was the first college in the country to require students to purchase a cell phone from the school (it's included in the cost of tuition), even if they already have a cell phone. The purpose of this "school phone" is so campus police can track students via GPS.

It's supposed to be for their own safety....protecting "kids", blah, blah, blah. But as we all know, most college "kids" aren't technically kids any more. They are adults, over the age of 18. When the program started, turning on the GPS was at the student's option, and if they didn't turn it off after 20 minutes, campus police would be dispatched to their location. It's a "safety thing".

http://usatoday30.us...lair-state-gps_N.htm

They say that a frog in a pot of water doesn't notice it's being cooked to death if you heat the water slowly.

So, the first step is making the phones mandatory to own. Next would be mandatory to carry, then mandatory to have turned on.

And I guess it's no big deal to someone that has been tracked by their parents since birth to continue to be tracked by police, as adults, when they go off to college.

So, how many of you here have had your privacy violated by a spying parent that thought they had the right to do that? How many of you had a parent that went rummaging through your "private thoughts" looking for something to hang you for? How many of you can really speak from the violated child's point of view? How many of you know first hand how damaging that is to a child, the relationship with that parent, what it does to any trust that child has in that parent, and how difficult it is to fix the damage once it is done? How many of you know first hand what happens after the child finds out?

Let's see a show of hands.

Am I the only one with my hand up?

For those of you that couldn't put your hand up, let me tell you what it feels like. It's mental and emotional rape. It shattered any and all trust I had in that parent. I felt set up, betrayed. And I never got over it. And our relationship has never recovered. That parent instantly became the last person in the world I would open up to and share anything with, the last person in the world I would go to for help if I was in trouble. And oh, boy, did I get into a ton of trouble in the years that followed. To be perfectly honest, I am pretty lucky to be alive today.

You want to go there with your kids? You think it will be different? You think somehow you are a better parent or your kids won't react like I did when you betray their trust in you? You think they will get over it and it won't do permanent damage to them or your relationship with them? You think they will still care what you think and feel about anything that has to do with them and their life, afterwards? You think they will still want your respect? Work hard to live up to your expectations? Try not to disappoint you?

I hope for your sake and the sake of your kids that you are right. But if you are wrong, don't say nobody ever warned you.

Is it a bad idea to monitor small children that are prone to getting lost?

No, it's not a bad idea to monitor small children, in fact it's a really good one. But what's wrong with monitoring small children the old fashioned way? You know...actually watching them? Small children rarely get lost when they are properly supervised.

Is it abnormal to have a dyscalculic rear end? I'm pretty sure my bottom never learned any mathematics. . . :P

Well, that depends...

Do you know your left cheek from your right? Or do you have to think about it?  :tellme:

Not necessarily true.  I see what you're saying.  But there's also the other side of what a child does under the scrutiny of an adult vs. not.  If you tell them you're going to be monitoring them, you've already poisoned the well.  And when you *can't* monitor them, you then don't know what they'll do.

I have heard this one before. Isn't this basically the same justification that governments use for spying on their citizens?

Have we really sunk to the point where Orwellian monitoring of our children is considered proper? Instead of taking the time to build a rapport of respect and trust with them??!?

The real key problem here is that if the kid has a GPS target painted on their back, then they're just as easy for anyone to find...and not all anyones have said child's best interests in mind. But yet we have obviously been trained to accept the idea of Big Brother-esq monitoring systems as righteous and good ... Because it's... For. The. Children.

How do you teach your children that spying on others and/or being spied on is unacceptable, if you are spying on them? What kind of privacy are they going to have as adults? What kind of erosion of their rights will they put up with? What type of rights will they not think a big deal to give up, never having actually had them since birth? (you can't miss what you have never had)

I have always felt that if a parent believed or that if a child showed that they are not mature or trustworthy enough to handle the responsibility of something, the parent shouldn't give it to the child, be it a key to the house, their own TV, their own computer, the responsibility of staying home alone without a babysitter, or a mobile phone.

If you don't think your kids are ready for the responsibility of a mobile phone, don't give them one. And if you think you have to spy on their usage of that phone, that's a pretty sure sign that you don't think they are ready for it.

Maybe we could work something out in that case. I thought you were going to do it on donation coder space. The only reason I'd want to keep the domain name is so links such as in readme files would work. (I did a perhaps inadvisable  thing and put caps in the readme links such as "FavesSoft.com/Whatever.zip" to make it easy to see there were 2 's's in FavesSoft, because I had an .htaccess line that set the domain portion to lower case automagically.)  Also I'd be able to update pad files.  That would be cool.  :) Mouser can always just delete the page if we go ahead.  I'd only want to offer program utilities for download.  I can recycle the wallpapers.  None were particularly artistic anyway.  So total space used should be only a few MB.

We should probably continue this discussion privately.

Oh, ok. I was going to set you up on some free space I have, with a free .tk domain name to point to it, like I did for Tom's site. A simple, free Wordpress theme appropriate for the purpose, fully secured, with automated offsite backups, too. And I would maintain it and keep Wordpress, theme, and any plugins updated for you.

You'd actually be doing me a favor. Don't think you'd be getting away with no strings attached, just because I said it's free.  :P

I'd want an honest testimonial for my site, in exchange for the work. That way when I start offering my services to the public, it doesn't look like I just started yesterday.  ;)

Does it have to be a Photoshop Plugin? Perhaps it might be better as a stand alone application. It certainly might be easier to find someone willing to make such a tool, if Photoshop wasn't part of the requirements.

I hate to say this, but in a locked down environment like that, you'll probably have to hand code it, unless you can find some already existing application installed on the system capable of doing some of the work for you, such as word processing software capable of exporting as HTML, to make the text formatting work faster. (or you could use Google Docs for that part) and then fill in the links by hand.

If this is something you plan on putting on the web, accessible to the public, let me know. I'd be happy to help set up something for you, with a domain name & all. (all for free). All you would have to do is supply the files and descriptions and I could turn it into something similar to Skwire's software page for you. It would be no trouble at all.

No, I mean switching it so it acts as only a modem and not as a router at all.

In case you don't know, you can use ANY desktop email client for AOL mail.

http://help.aol.com/...amp;externalId=73219

I suggest if you plan on switching back and forth between using desktop email software and the AOL software (or webmail), that you configure your email client to use IMAP instead of POP3. That way your mail stays stored on their servers, like you are used to.

Does AOL even offer a stand-alone mail client that you CAN make the default?  As in, a client that is non-browser based?  If so, does it show up in the list of programs (on the left side of the Set Default Programs window) you can choose from?

They used to, but they killed off AOL Communicator (which was actually quite nice) when they opened up IMAP access to their users, allowing them to pretty much use whatever software they wanted.
