General Software Discussion / Re: Opera Dragonfly
« Last post by Renegade on February 25, 2008, 03:27 PM »
My guess is that they're getting Yngwie Malmsteen for the Opera project ;D

Hahahaha~! :D

You KNOW that we'd expect it to download the entire Internet somewhere between bar 2 and 3 then!

(For those that don't know Yngwie, he's the guitar speed God and can play all of Wagner's "The Ring" in under 8 seconds instead of 8 hours.)

I like where in the ZDnet article comments someone points out an article from the same author where he says exactly the opposite! :)

This really annoys me. Its people who force themselves into your lane by riding up as far as they can in the ending lane. You know, the lane that had a sign 2 miles ago stating that it was ending in 2 miles. These people choose to push as far as they can past the end of the lane only to cut in front of everyone else. You mainly see this when there is a lot of traffic and people just have to get that extra 10 seconds saved by not merging where they should have.

Hehehe! NEVER come to Asia... Just trust me on this! (It's not just cars...) ;)

In this article I’ll try to explain why software patents are necessary, and in the sake of fairness I’ll look at the other side of each argument.

Bull****. (As per the first comment.)

The article is little more than a quick argument followed by zero support for it and lots of debunking it. The author is CLEARLY against software patents.

I report, you decide.

That was completely disingenuous to say the least.

The title, "In defense of software patents," would better be written as, "There is no defense for software patents."

I'm not taking a side, but that article was SOOOO slanted that it wasn't even funny. It was a very very thin veil...

General Software Discussion / Re: IE8 Beta 1 coming soon
« Last post by Renegade on February 24, 2008, 03:51 PM »
IE8? Man... Korea is so screwed... IE7 and Vista totally broke everything here... I suppose that's what you get for coding specifically for IE6 and using tons of ActiveX though...

I can't wait to hear all the moaning when the beta is publicly available. No matter how good it is, you know it will all be nothing more than, "IE8 sucks. Firefox rulez. I love my Mac." :)

In any event, it's nice to see that IE is being actively developed.

So, who is crazy enough to participate in the testing?

+1 for that!

Not so sure that I'd say it's a rip off, but...

I have some Rhino Software licenses. I can login to the Rhino site and download the old version where my upgrade insurance expired. Very nice touch and shows that they "get it" when it comes to customer service.

Then again, it may make sense for some people to try and compete on price, but gain additional revenue through "protection" plans. It's just shifting the revenue model somewhat. I don't think it's a very good direction to go in, but I can understand why some might do it. It sends a "customer service" red flag up for me.

Phrases like "cheap software" and "OEM" in email titles trigger my instant delete finger. Most of the other triggers aren't very polite. :)

I'd be very very very weary of using various people's (even if made by reputable companies (for what that's worth)) components for public web-facing sites. It's OK with issues and minor bugs for user interface components, but for stuff that's web-facing a minor bug could easily mean you get rooted.

I wouldn't even consider a component that ships without source (not that it has to be GPL-style opensource, closed source is fine - as long as it's available).

+1,000 for that. (I think for different reasons though.)

I do use some closed source software, but only in certain situations where I KNOW that it's solid. I'll almost always go for a source license if at all possible, and abandon things where I can't get source.

I've been burned very badly from not having source available, and the developer closing shop. NOT a good thing.

I've heard very positive reviews of the latest FrontPage from people that HATE FrontPage.

As for VWD, I don't use it as I have VS 2008 Professional, but it's basically the same thing (albeit with extra bells and whistles). It rocks.

However, you do need to get used to the idea of "code behind" to get the most out of it. That's not hard though.

MS is far out in front of the crowd for development in this area. .NET truly is a huge departure from everything else and is the right direction. The basic way that you develop is a huge leap from the past as well (e.g. the Expression series). While it's still a work in progress, the direction is solid and you'll see in the future that others will need to immitate MS in order to make their tools as productive as the Visual Studio series.

Depending on your level of experience and needs, I'd say one of the best ways to make a web site now is to use VS with DotNetNuke (a CMS). Build the extra functionality that you need into DNN, but don't reinvent the wheel. At the end of the day, you'll end up spending much less time screwing around building things that people have done 1000x already, and 1000x better than you could do yourself. However, there is a learning curve for DNN and for the first bit it WILL be frustrating. Once you get over it though, you're in the clear and on your way to super-fast RAD.

What people need to understand (and this is what MS really "gets"), is that development today is becoming so horribly complex that nobody can possibly keep up with it anymore, and the workload needs to be distributed amongst many people. VS is geared towards that. The Expression series is the next step in the evolution of development where the front end is abstracted away from the developer and given to the designer. i.e. The various 'domains' are becoming much more granular and niche than they were in the past.

Another way to put that is that the VS development methodology easily leads to more scalable development.

While I haven't updated to SP1 yet, I'm finding Vista very nice. I do hate the copy stuff, but whatever. There are worse things in life.

Does SP1 fix that nasty copy delay thing?

MS is pretty good with their licensing. If you haven't heard of them, check out the Empower Program or the Action Pack. Both very good deals.

People who start getting onto the tube, bus, train, whatever public transportation BEFORE I or anyone else can get off it! What's so difficult to understand? You let us get out, and THEN you can get in. It's a very easy concept. Container is full, to add something to the container, something must necessarily be removed first. :wallbash:

AMEN!

Solids are NOT compressible!

Those people shouldn't have children...

And it's one of the reasons that I really enjoy driving to work now. I really don't need to as it's cheap and easy to use public transportation in Seoul, but geez... You NAILED that one!

When is someone on dc going to make a defense game staring cody!

Who are the game developers here?

I don't do any game development. I'm pretty much audio, database, utility, blah blah blah... But not games.

YES!

I'm glad Blu-ray won! I'm really only concerned about buying a burner to make backups, and the extra storage on Blu-ray is exactly what I wanted.

I'll now start actually looking to purchase one...

Just a note, but I think that you should make sure that you spin that code off into another thread and poll it for completion.

Otherwise you may end up with some nastiness.

General Software Discussion / Re: Free Microsoft Commercial Developer Tools
« Last post by Renegade on February 20, 2008, 03:15 PM »
good move but very late.
Ruby on rails.PHP,Google Mashup,J2EE,Spring,Hibernate,AJAX,XUL is all we need cause it is free.even if industry force MS technlogy usage but some hosting companies and individual will continue to save with open source.

Hmmm...

I'm going to have to disagree there... Free is usually not the answer.

I work with:

* Closed source commercial software
* Open source software (FOSS)
* Open source commercial software

I find that it is cheaper to work with commercial software most often. In general I find that FOSS software lacks documentation needed to use it quickly and effectively. The development time spent getting up to speed with some FOSS can cost more than just purchasing a commercial component where you get the docs needed to start using it right away.

Not always true, but very often I find that's the case.

If I were a student, I'd go for MS tools like that in a heartbeat.

As for the MS "attack" on OS, I think they "get it" now, and I believe that they will succeed for the most part.

I should probably post a deeper link for audio players at CowScorpion. Here's one example.

There are a lot more with a far smaller UI at Vector. (I can't connect to it for some silly reason...)

The minimalist simplicity of VUplayer (recommended by Allen) won me over.

You should see some of the Japanese players -- they take minimalism to the extreme! Play. Pause. Volume. Context menu for everything else. (Or there abouts.) Check out CowScorpion to see some.

But is there no love for the Satanic Music Detector? Is this forum filled only with godless heathens? Where are there the pious and the devout? Have we all lost our faith?  :P
