Strange... I thought that "Leave it to Beaver" would have been #1! :)

I haven't seen all of them, but quite a few.

The genre is always a favorite of mine. There are quite a few more movies that could be added to the honorable mentions though.

Some of the rankings are no surprise, e.g. "Blade Runner" is right up there, but some are a bit more puzzling, e.g. I thought "12 Monkeys" would have done better than some ahead of it.

I remember seeing the uncensored version of Akira when it came out (at an indie theatre). It was good, but the massive amounts of blood was overkill and really just a tad too much.

I however will not be adding anything to my DVD 'to-get' list as I really doubt that anything would be available here. :( I would like to see that "Serenity" movie though. Sigh...

I was thinking, my second favorite, and very close to #1 is "A Woodland Critter Christmas" -- SouthPark. Absolutely hilarious! I almost died laughing when I first saw it.

Seriously -- I was laughing so hard that I could barely breathe and was somewhat worried that I'd suffocate, which only made things funnier! I still laugh when I see it, but am in significantly less danger of dying. :)

Today I'm getting back to some DotNetNuke development (ASP.NET with C#) with CodeSmith templates that I'm writing (based on previous work -- not reinventing what I don't need to there).

So far I've got over 30,000 LOC done (plumbing) thanks to the templates. There's lots of stuff that I'll need to do manually, but templating it just saves sooooo much time.

Living Room / Favorite TV Episode???

Not your favorite TV show. Specific episode...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 6 - Episode 7 -- Once More, with Feeling

Off-the-hook crazy, insane amazing! Music. Plot. It all just works perfectly! This one, it really does go to 11!

(IMDB listing)

Absolutely the most brilliant TV episode I've ever seen. Better than anything from The Prisoner (imdb), The Twilight Zone, or anything else.

There are a lot of very good ones out there, but I won't list them all... That's YOUR job! :)

So... Favorite episodes... (Not shows.)

I hate the record industry. Hate++, actually. Their greed knows no limits. I really like what Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails is doing with the release of ghosts - I hope they'll keep doing it that way, and that it will inspire other artists too.

+1,000,000 for f0dder

I would add in that, "Their idiocy and laziness knows no limits." There are many ways to monetize things, but they're too stupid or lazy to do some real work and make things happen.

And good on him for Trent doing some work and putting himself out there. He's a brilliant musician, and showing that he can take that to the business level as well.

Criminal behaviour is one thing. Treating me like a criminal when I'm not is another thing.
So if someone engages in criminal behaviour on the internet everyone should just take their word that it's not?

That just doesn't make sense. I was referring to the vast majority of people that are not criminals. Why should anyone need to prove their innocence for no reason? Why treat good people like criminals?

The counter argument is usually, "Good people have nothing to hide." That doesn't cut it for reasons outlined above (see the Russian example).

This is nothing short of beautiful, wonderful, gorgeous, uplifting, <add in more praise here>, news.

The RIAA and the MPAA need to figure these things out, and see that there are other revenue models out there.

If someone makes harassing and threatening phone calls to someone else or writes them harassing or threatening letters the government can step in and find the perpetrator and charge him with a crime.
Do you agree that those things are a crime and not protected speech?
Why should people be allowed to do the same thing on the internet anonymously and not be charged with a crime?

Criminal behaviour is one thing. Treating me like a criminal when I'm not is another thing.

To those that would treat the innocent like criminals, I have only two words. One starts with "F" and the other with "O".

Most people are good people and don't engauge in that kind of behaviour. It is not necessary to monitor them.

Most people are not capable of doing things anonymously on the Internet. To do that, you need some kind of real obfuscation to cover your tracks. e.g. Anonymous proxy, TOR, etc.

The Internet is already wide open now. There is no sense in trying to pass a completely insane law that is equally technically insane. How could it possibly be implemented? Nuts. Sheer, complete, total, utter, unabashed insanity. The only reason to do it would be to restrict freedoms and bring the world yet one step closer to Big Brother.

Then again, the US, Canada and the UK governments have been whittling down and diluting freedoms so much over the past few decades that nobody sees it when it happens anymore. It's shameful.

10114
It's just too much power to give to the government. There's no good reason for any government to "listen in on me." It's only ushering in Big Brother in the most blatant and insane way imaginable.

When I get drunk and rant about how assassination is a legitimate political tool (I think Machiavelli would agree), there's no reason for the government to hear that, or throw me in jail, or execute me, or whatever.

It's just dangerous to allow that kind of power to a government. Period.

The Russian example is proof enough.

You can get design done off-shore for relatively cheap. A fresh grad in some countries makes $300+ out of university. $100 can go a long way there.

Some of the best 'clueless ideas' come from software companies that:

1) Include a license inside the shrink wrapped product that you have to agree to BEFORE opening the package (MS and Adobe figure largely here)

2) People who design installers that only unpack the installation instructions so that you can read them after installing the product (almost all shareware and freeware seems to fall into this category)
-Carol Haynes (March 09, 2008, 06:58 PM)

:) Hahahaha~!

For #1, I wonder if you could open it, read the license, then return it because the license is too restrictive...

For #2, all too true. But the installer itself should usually guide you through. I like to package my own software in a ZIP file so that I can include instructions before the installer is run at all. I don't always include that, but sometimes.

I think that it's a generally good idea to know when people are better than you at something, then bow out and be smart enough to go with their work instead.
Depends on whether you're trying to be productive, or you're in it for the fun & learning. But I do agree :)

Very true.

When I'm in it to learn, I'll reinvent the wheel. But most of the time I'm just trying to be productive.

Good point though.

PowerGrep will certainly do it, but is perhaps overkill for most people.

Most decent text editors will do this. Editplus does. Just use the "Replace in files" function. (Or whatever it's called --- similar to that anyways.)

Today is working with an FFT component. Not so much learning stuff, but rather not reinventing the wheel. Especially when the guys that do this stuff are highly specialized and all have a Ph.D. in the field... Yeah... I'll just trust them instead! :)

I think that it's a generally good idea to know when people are better than you at something, then bow out and be smart enough to go with their work instead.

This is one of those things that I _could_ do, but would be foolish to think that I can do a better job.

Third Normal Form

Fourth Normal Form -- This is what I aim at as a minimum in general. Which generally satisfies:

Fifth Normal Form

There is also:

Sixth Normal Form

Not useful for most people though.

Another important concept: Denormalization

I agree with you that many things are better offloaded to the database.

I am often apalled in web development how little is offloaded to the database. I think it is the fault of the way people learned, often learning database abstraction layers and learning on databases like mysql which until recently did not have foreign keys, subqueries or other basic tools of the DBA trade.

My favorite databases has been Postgres in recent years, it's a beauty to develop for/with - although I hate the absence of easy, simple replication

It really is a terrible sin.

If you have a bug, you then corrupt the data in your database. The cost to fix it is immense. Say you have 20,000 records (a small table) and you know that at least 50 have been poisoned by some bad logic in code... OUCH! Database == haystack. Bad record == needle. Not fun.

In the past I would never ever have touched MySQL simply because it wasn't a real RDBMS and hence couldn't be trusted.

I fiddled with PostgreSQL a number of years ago, but it's just easier for me to deal with MS SQL Server whenever possible. And I never understood why anyone would use MySQL when they had PostgreSQL available. That completely baffled me. RDBMS vs. huh?

Spinning off from another thread...

So? What do you like to do? Hate to see? Scream/cry when you see?

I like to a bit beyond 3rd normal form for a lot of things. I'm certainly not shy about spinning off data into a 1:1 identity relationship to ease the load on a table and keep less "immediate" data in another table (or to keep the table small -- they have limits for row size).

One thing that makes me scream inside is when I see structures that are below the 3rd normal form.

Another thing that makes me scream inside (and sometimes outside) is seeing tables with extra columns to store derived data in a parent/child relationship that needs to be controlled in code, when the simple and safe solution is to relate the table to itself with a foreign key to indicate the parent in the table.

Basically, any time I see a design where things need to be controlled inside of code, and not in the database, a little piece of me dies...

I do like joining tables on themselves for parent/child relationships. I don't really like it much for anything beyond a single join, but I'd go for 2 or 3 if I know that the usage won't be a problem and that it won't go beyond that.

I suppose that whenever possible, I like off-loading the work to the database.

I love working with databases. It's just fun! :)

I can't recommend any better books, but I would probably say that it helps to read one on the database that you're planning to use. I generally use MS SQL Server, MySQL (if I absolutely have to and have no choice), and VistaDB.

MySQL has a lot of things that just irk me. VistaDB I only use for desktop applications. MS SQL Server I like for everything else. There are a lot of things in T-SQL that expand on SQL that are good to take advantage of if you know that is what you're going to use. Similarly, other databases have their own "tweaks".

Time to spin off another thread -- got a related thing I'd like to chat about...
