Living Room / Re: So how long IS too long for a thread.
« Last post by nosh on March 26, 2008, 03:29 AM »
in all seriousness, do you think if we added the "ignore thread" option to the forum, so people could mark threads as those that shouldnt show up in "unread topics" list, it might help this situation?

It would definitely help but I guess there'll always be a niggling doubt that one may miss something significant by completely ignoring a thread.

There's also the "off-topic" factor which could contribute greatly to the size of longer threads, a lot of us are guilty of this and I have a small suggestion about this. What if you let a person posting OT, mark the post as such. OT posts could have their headers displayed inline but the post would be collapsed, so someone reading the thread would not be forced to read the OT posts & could just skim by them unless they clicked those posts to expand them, something like how gmail displays email threads.

Thanks Armando, but the dog in the avatar doesn't belong to me, saw him at a pet shop and couldn't resist posing with him. :D
My doggie can be seen in this thread. He's a distant relation of Tinjaw's. ;D

My dog's a southpaw :-*, so right brain makes sense.  I think he's gay too* but that's besides the point.  ;D

Clarification: *too = in addition to being a southpaw. :)

You could compress something like 1 GB to under 5 KB, it all depends on what you're compressing. ;)
I'd upload the file but I'm scared some forum AV might try to peek into it.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Ever have your tray icons disappear randomly?
« Last post by nosh on March 24, 2008, 11:58 AM »
I was facing this issue even as I read the post. Started Process Explorer, killed explorer.exe and ran it again via Process Explorer's run command. The missing icon's back again - so I'd have to say something simple like Explorestart would do the trick. Off to download it, thanks for the tip PhilB66.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox Portable vs Regular Firefox
« Last post by nosh on March 24, 2008, 08:45 AM »
Right then, portable is out. Thanks for saving me on time, edbro! :)

Edit: Got a heads up for f0dder's comment. Nice to know. I also noticed it's really simple to copy all your settings to the portable version.
Copying Your Local Firefox Settings
If you're using a local copy of Firefox, you may wish to just copy your local Firefox settings right into Firefox Portable. Your local Firefox profile is usually installed in [...] Just copy the contents of that folder[...]

Guess I'll just work on the normal version and port everything from there.

« Last post by nosh on March 24, 2008, 08:01 AM »
Really?  :'(  I obviously need to research this thing a bit more. I've noticed that apps like KMPlayer take quite a bit longer when they're saving settings to the disk, rather than the registry. The bottomline is, I want the fastest (talk about a misnomer!) setup of Firefox I can get. I have 47 extensions installed & have discarded several more in the past using the same old profile so even if I don't go the portable way it should be interesting to see if building an identical profile from scratch makes any sort of difference to performance. Will update this thread when I'm done, whenever that may be. :P

Thanks all. I'll build a fresh profile on the portable version and if it seems snappier than the regular one I'll stick with it.

General Software Discussion / Firefox Portable vs Regular Firefox
« Last post by nosh on March 23, 2008, 04:29 PM »
Would it make sense to run Firefox Portable instead of the regular non-portable version right off the HDD?

I read about an extension that lets us import/export settings for (most of) the existing extensions & intend to start a fresh profile from scratch. I was wondering if I should just go with FF portable - unless there's a performance hit involved! It would make backing things up so much simpler, not to mention the obvious advantage of having a fully configured portable version.

I'd have gone with mouser on the security app thing (doesn't necessarily have to be an AV, could be something like a firewall bundled with HIPS) but your claim that CPU usage is very low blows away that theory.
Use Process Explorer to single out what's using so much CPU power during file operations.

I lined it out coz I realised that the browser, though loaded from the remote machine, would still run on the local machine where the command was issued. :)

Living Room / Re: OpenDNS - safer, faster and smarter DNS
« Last post by nosh on March 22, 2008, 01:56 AM »
Digital Inspiration has a useful tip for OpenDNS users who would like to keep using Gooooogle as the default search engine associated with the address bar.

Long story short:
about:config
keyword.url  ---> http://www.google.com/search?q=
keyword.enabled ---> true

It's interesting to note that the string in my keyword.url already pointed to Google but with different params, changing it to the simpler string actually enabled Google.

The article has similar info for IE users too.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by nosh on March 21, 2008, 07:35 AM »
when I try to open my D:\, explorer freezes for some seconds (trying to read the many dirs and files maybe?)

With a file manager there would also be a lot of overhead processing the drive. I'm not a DOpus user but things like the view you use, field(s) on which the files are sorted, color coding, would all have an impact on the load times for any file manager.

If you want a really fast file manager try Servant Salamander.

General Software Discussion / Re: Tool for editing mp4 videos
« Last post by nosh on March 20, 2008, 02:54 AM »
Thanks Jim. I tried ImToo (along with a whole lot of other) tailored-for-PSP converters last night. A few of these do have trimming features but you can only snip off the start and/or end of the clips - no real editing functionality. :)

General Software Discussion / Tool for editing mp4 videos
« Last post by nosh on March 20, 2008, 02:21 AM »
I need to do some basic editing (cut & paste stuff) to a bunch of .mp4 videos before I move them to a PSP.  I looked at a few recommendations in the video editing threads but most of the intermediate level tools don't support mp4 all the way. I do all my editing with VirtualDub-MPEG2, it does let me edit the files but will only save them if I let it encode them to avi (which I then have to reconvert to mp4  :-\). Is there anything that'll let me do this in direct stream mode? I assume Premiere or Vegas may be up to the task but they seem like total overkill for this.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: FillCD equivalent
« Last post by nosh on March 18, 2008, 07:44 PM »
Xplorer2 has a function that lets you mark a combination of files upto a total file size but the algorithm used is rather simplistic and can often be improved on manually. You could still use it if the file/folder sizes are relatively small, minimizing the margin for error. Perhaps some other file manager does this more intelligently.

Just tried FillCD and it's awesome! Which one of the reasons you've mentioned is really putting you off it?
Reg abandonment - who cares? It's a really well done/refined app.
Downloading the latest build - [3.0.4] - not a problem.
Shareware - Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've read I think it just gives you a nag screen once you're past the due date - if you genuinely cannot get in touch with the author I really don't see why you shouldn't keep using it. Donate the amount to PETA or something if it helps you sleep better. :)

PS: I agree about BttB, didn't care for it much.

More than ten responses, I knew there had to be something fishy going on with this thread.  ;D

That's a pretty interesting quote, Zaine. Some of my favorite quotes are from "American Psycho" (no, that's not meant as a snide/sarcastic comment  ) - Bret Easton Ellis is a genius... highly recommended!

I wouldn't be altogether surprised if there's some seriously FUBAR app out there that take upwards of three weeks to index.  ;)

xyplorer can only search files, not emails or contacts  :(

Nice in its own right, but not exactly uncommon if I may be honest.

A feature I've always wanted in such a utility is to show me the top [userdefined number] resource hogs at any given time in a tiny 'always on top' window. Process Explorer shows this data as a tray icon tooltip. A Yahoo widget I had installed did this really well but Y-widgets itself was a bit of a resource guzzler.  :-\

Nice idea. A simple Autohotkey script that closes FF (through its menu system), used in conjunction with something like Xecutor should suffice.

Yup, the links you hover over are displayed in the address bar with a hover.jpg preceding them so you know they're hovered links, they stop showing up in the status bar if you have the feature enabled. I've disabled that, find myself instinctively glancing down all the time & I need the status bar for other stuff anyway. The connection status is nice though, much more noticeable in the address bar.
