The WordPress project is testing out Slack as our main real-time communication platform, replacing IRC and ad hoc Skype chats. When compiling a list of things people liked about our existing options, it was obvious that Slack was all of that and more, including:

You should make a DonationCoder slack team.

So I've noticed that when it's minimized to tray, if I double click or right-click and select "Show Main Window" it will make the window show up in the task bar, but it doesn't actually show the window until I click it in the task bar. So that's kind of useless.

Also, while it's in the state of still minimized but showing in the task bar, it also still shows it in the tray, which I think it should only do when it's minimized. Which... erm... I guess it is/does. So once you fix the first problem, this second one will also go away.

I'd also like to request a portable/zip/non-installer version.

Not going to lie...those audio alerts are driving me insane...It's not that they "don't" work, as I didn't remove anything to kill the functionality.  It seems that there is something bugging it out making them stop working for no reason at all...not sure why to be honest and really something I have to look deeper into.

An international team of researchers has developed the fastest network cable in the world. It can transmit 255 terabits per second, which is equivalent to all of the traffic flowing through the Internet at peak time.

Right now, the fastest fibre optic line on the market is capable of transmitting 100 gigabits per second (gbps), which converts to 12.5 gigabytes per second (GBps). That’s pretty impressive, but an international team of researchers has decided that it really isn’t enough, and is developing a new fibre optic line that can carry a whopping 2,500 times more data. That means 255 terabits per second (tbps), which works out to be 32 terabytes per second (TBps). In other words, you could transfer 1 GB in 0.003 of a second.

"255 tbps is mindbogglingly quick; it’s greater, by far, than the total capacity of every cable - hundreds of glass fibres - currently spanning the Atlantic Ocean,” says Sebastian Anthony at Extreme Tech. "In fact, 255 terabits per second is similar to - or maybe even more than - the total sum of all traffic flowing across the Internet at peak time."

The technology is being developed by researchers at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands and the University of Central Florida in the US. The sub-sea cables that currently support the Internet consist of what’s known as single-mode optical fibre cables, which means they can only carry a light signal from a single laser at a time. This signal is guided down the centre of the cable through a ‘core’, which means the amount of data able to be transmitted by these cables is, quite literally, limited by the laws of physics. We can only fit so much through a single core.

This new cable, on the other hand, is a multi-mode, or 'multi-core', cable, which means it has seven cores arranged like a hexagon that run along its length. These multiple cores allow data signals from seven different laser sources to be transmitted simultaneously.

The team has tested their new fibre cable in the lab along a one-kilometre stretch, and is now working on the (admittedly very slow) process of getting it to the market. According to Extreme Tech, multi-mode fibre is set to eventually replace the single-mode cable that currently supports the Internet, but that means physically manufacturing and installing millions of kilometres of the stuff, which will take many years.

"It’d be like replacing every two-lane highway in America with eight-lane raised freeways. It’s totally possible, just not economically feasible,” adds Andrew Tarantola from Gizmodo. "But, given how fast the Internet is currently growing, it won’t be long until we need this technology."

I can work on it locally, then package the whole thing up, database & all, and then hand it over to mouser. It would then be up to him to use it or not. And if he chooses not to, do I then host it myself? Does etiquette say that's an acceptable thing to do? Or do I end up having to accept the idea that I just did a ton of work for nothing?

Sites like Download.com just collect everybody else's work and make them all available in one place...and to be honest...if we had a DC version...life would be MUCH easier...I mean...It took me 15 minutes the other day to find something _I_ had released here lol

What I mean is that it would be hard for someone without mouser's approval to make wholesale changes to the site.  And this would be pretty much a wholesale change.  He's also on the line as a pig, whereas we're all chickens.  I try to always keep that in mind with anything for the site... I might disagree, but I'm not the one on the hook when it comes down to it.

I do get what you are saying, and yes...the decision ultimately comes down to mouser.  However, App could create some sort of service like the wanted to and host it separately to DC.  I know it wouldn't be the ideal solution...but something like that would be easier to implement as it would not require mouser to intervene any further than (possibly) giving approval.

Site wide changes for a website of this structure and scale are never going to please everybody...you only have to look at what happens every time Facebook make a change to their UI...people bitch, moan, and within 2 days, completely forget anything happened

I can tell you why not... it's not her site.  That's just one reason that I'd think of if it was me.  But I think that's the big one that's been holding her back if you look between the lines.

Actually, as far as I am aware, there are other mitigating reasons that have held her and many others back from doing something like this.

Not being her site wouldn't make much difference as I don't think any of us really see DC as "This is mousers website...that's it"...more of a community project.  DC is now, and will always be "Crowd Funded" in the sense that without the supporters, DC wouldn't be anything like it is...I know mousers Software does bring in the greater majority of users...but without the community...this whole site would be just based around those, and be a support forum for mouser's Software instead of what it really is.

Overall, this is probably one of the most depressing threads I've read in a long time. 

I'm not a coder. But I am a musician. And if musicians (as a collective) can routinely gather "fiercely independent personalities" (including the occasional hyper-talented albeit bona fide sociopath) to collaborate on artistically valid, and financially remunerative projects...I'm wondering why coders can't do the same?

Is this 'problem' real? Or is it just something coders have programmed themselves to believe?

That thread was started after a discussion in the IRC channel, and mouser suggested I post about it and get some input from the community.

Almost 3.5 years later and I am sitting here with the feeling that I should have just gone ahead and done it, and handed it to mouser. And it still bothers me enough that I am considering just doing it and calling it my NANY project for this year. 

And I don't care if it ends up only being used for a few months, or ultimately, a few years.

So, it's not that there isn't a desire to contribute, and not that we don't want to work together. Some of us are still waiting for their assignments, have sat by and watched someone else end up with the assignment they were best suited for, watched that person eventually abandon the project, and are getting the feeling that they are never going to be taken seriously, and are trying really hard not to take it personally and feel insulted by it.

Is that how big projects get done? Obviously not, if 3.5 years later we still don't have a DoCo 2.0 or at the very least, a proper software repository.

While this may sound gimmicky, removing windows has the added benefit of weight reduction and would also simplify plane construction. It would also allow greater flexibility when designing the interior of the plane.

Windows, window frames, and bracing for the hole where the window goes would all be removed. Then the screen material (which would also be plastic) would replace the currently used interior walls...so yeah, I can see it dropping a bit.

It might not even be plastic.  The screen could realistically be a material of some sort (I have no clue what but suspect it is possible).  It would certainly provide some good views either way if done correctly!

Bvckup is a handly little utility (less than 500kb in size) for backup up files to different drives/computers.

From what I can gather, it does not actually upload the entire file, each and every time you process it.  Instead, it locates the changed data, and only uploads that portion of it to the original file, saving very large amounts of time on each upload.

Don't know if it is still in Development, but it was released here at DC so you might be able to contact the developer or find something about it.

Also, just as a hint - You can upload your application directly to DonationCoder if it less than 8MB in size (Which, your Filesize is: 2.020 MB so would be fine.).  Makes more sense to have it hosted here then people don't have to go to a less-than-known download site

I don't get it.  468 messages deleted as spam by 700 spammers banned.   
Does this mean that each spammer only created, on average, 0.668 of a spam?
How do you create a partial spam?

I think the spammers who didn't post, got caught by other Anti-Spam methods such as IP recognition or using a known spam e-mail address on registration.  Those "members" would have been banned BEFORE ever reaching the "New Topic" screen.

No.  One must copy and paste from Personal Area in order to move it to a live forum section.

I have a tendency to have a lot of DC tabs open at any one time and sometimes multiple "New Topic" tabs for mocking up posts before making them, and sometimes I don't realize I have posted something live that should have been a test post.

Yes.  The Personal Area is a private area ONLY you can see. - It looks and feels like the public forum sections, but nobody else can see in there.

If you want to move something from that area to a public section, then you can do so by copy/paste method, or by speaking to mouser and asking him to move it for you.
