General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox Extensions: Your favorite or most useful
« Last post by cmpm on February 15, 2010, 06:42 AM »
Tab Utilities is updated, but it will not update the normal way.
I think it's because it's experimental, although I thought I had updates to those as well, through the normal update method.

Anyway here's the updated add on, some better features and operation.

The greed of one or a few with even a little power can halt real progress.
And 'non-profit' does not mean someone isn't making money.
To which the doers of the work deserve,
yet unfortunate that too much management will divide the capital.
I have no idea wtf they do or are doing, but money is involved.
More then anticipated I expect.
Which is a deception or perceived holding of power.

Atlantis can be portable.
This is instructions for the paid version.

I could not find how to do it with Atlantis Nova, the free version, but it should be possible, I would think.

Yes, Zaine, it was the adblock extension.
Disabled it and the page is fine now.

Funny, I have adblock+ on FF and it does not interfere.
Thanks for your input.

Here's a Winamp solution if you use Winamp.
Or want to try it. You probably saw this in your search.
I don't know if it works.

General Software Discussion / Re: SubmitToTab - a Firefox add-on
« Last post by cmpm on February 05, 2010, 09:24 PM »
You could add this Boolean value to 'about:config' and set it to false.

extensions.checkCompatibility

Skipping any compatibility checks for all add-ons.
I would not use it for anything and everything though, just if you really want to see if it will let an add-on that is really special work, one at a time.

If it's set to true the add-on will be disabled.
If you click the compatibility warning to check in the add-on console, this value will be deleted from about:config. I just toggle it as needed.

Chrome is slower with more extensions.

For some reason it's not rendering my chess games at chess.com.
FF does fine but chrome will show the site but not the pieces on the board.
Must have something to do with images, cause that's what the chess pieces are, images.
I have Java and Flash, does Chrome block java?....I don't know.

If anyone wants to look at it, I imagine you would have to register and start a game.
It is free, and also has membership services to pay for.
But to play there is no cost.

I've put Chrome on my laptop since the addition of adblock, flashblock and xmarks.
But FF is my default still on this rather slow machine, 1.8 sempron.

With this latest add on, Webpage Decorator, I may make it the default. Since I've been waiting to see a similar extension to FF's No Squint. This is...similar.
Using Control++ to change the website size is tiring.
This new extension remembers your font settings, a big plus imo.

General Software Discussion / Re: Multiple DropBox instances
« Last post by cmpm on February 02, 2010, 09:28 PM »
Hacking dropbox will kill it's it's free 2gb account eventually in this way, imo.
I don't know if I would do it, but to each their own thoughts on the matter.
Windows Live offers 25gb of storage and 1gb through Office Live for free.

Wouldn't it work if you set up dropbox as a different user on your machine?
Even then, your ip address is read, or can be, I don't know if they do.
I would think using two user accounts on your computer would be more acceptable should it be spotted.

just sayin'.....

Living Room / Re: What's the best registry cleaner? Ask Leo says: none
« Last post by cmpm on January 31, 2010, 10:19 AM »
There is a massive amount of registry cleaner software that will destroy a computer.

There are very few that would actually remove what it should and leave the rest alone.
No more then 3 regcleaners I would even consider using, if at all.

I don't run them anymore, but I used to.
And would argue for some for their usefulness.
Cleaning the temp files would be, and is better anyway.

And run SuperAntispyware and Malwarebytes occasionally.

Other then that consult a pro with any problems.

General Software Discussion / Re: Make XP look like Win7
« Last post by cmpm on January 29, 2010, 09:30 AM »
Is there a guide to making Win7 look like Win2000 and behave like XP?

Because I am very happy with my XP system with classic theme, and I'd rather not upgrade if I am going to end up forced to look at a bunch of eye candy that I'd rather not, and lose functionality with all the crap they changed.

You can change the start menu with "Classic Shell" to look like XP.

http://www.raymond.c...-classic-start-menu/

The rest you can do through "Personalize" (right click desktop for options).
Except for the taskbar, which I haven't seen anything that I remember to change it to a 'classic' look. You can kill the Aero easy enough but still the quick launch is W7 and not XP. I switched to small icons on the taskbar which makes it easier on the eye and mind.

Overall I'm getting used to W7 as it is, and like it better then XP.
Searching is quick with W7's indexer.
The start menu search box is programs and a 'run' box.
Help is actually helpful, if you can believe it.
I've indexed the entire computer for working with windows explorer.
That helps and doesn't slow anything down that I've noticed.
The tray is much more usable and easier to deal with.

General Software Discussion / Re: Add item to Firefox context menu?
« Last post by cmpm on January 23, 2010, 08:42 AM »
It's not a context menu item, but I use the bookmarks toolbar.
You drag and drop bookmarks to it from the address bar.
Right click a space in the menu/navigation area to customize and check 'bookmarks toolbar.
Click and hold the icon in the address bar and drop in the bookmarks bar.
You can also move the bookmarks bar to where the address bar is or where the menu bar is and make it one button with a drop down of whatever you put in it.

Keeping an index for searching these folders is convenient.
Using windows indexing I can open the 'Owner' folder and search.
Even AppData files are in it, 'show hidden files' will reveal that.
This is in case I don't know where a file went.
Though sometimes the file is in the program files for the app.
Some kind of standard is needed, or set your own when clicking save.
But some things don't give a choice on location I think.

My Documents gets crowded as apps create their own folders in it.

This looks close to the problem. The first post starts at the bottom of the page and go up to see replies.

Hope it helps.

Looking at it closer I have to agree it does not meet that requirement.
"Folders that do not contain".

Maybe something in here that would work, I haven't tried any of them.
It's a simple google search, watch for reliable sources and check the developer's site.
That's my habit anyway....

General Software Discussion / Re: Ready Boost?
« Last post by cmpm on January 18, 2010, 02:59 PM »
Windows ReadyBoost: does give a bit better performance on really low-memory systems, if the USB drive is fast enough.

Yes, thanks f0dder, that's what I've been hearing from all sources on the net.
Right now the cost of more memory is too high for me. Money needed for other things.
Although that could change soon. But I'm not sure if this old laptop will last anyway.
It's an old Acer 3500, which works fine, but if something goes wrong, I'm upgrading to a better laptop since this one is single core (probably slows it more then the memory) when the money is right.
