I'll explain the contact page...

How many ways can you think of to allow people to contact you without using your web host's mail servers? Which one is the most user friendly?

Off the top of my head I can think of 3.

Option 1 was the easiest and fastest, but Wordpress wouldn't cooperate and allow me to add the javascript code to a post, and I am not about to install a plugin to over-ride the built-in security of Wordpress, that is causing the issue.

So I went with option 2 (the captcha) till I can set up option 3, which is an actual contact form that won't be sending the mail through my web host, like I did for tomos;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Free FTP storage using my own FTP client??
« Last post by app103 on November 08, 2013, 10:52 AM »
I hate to have to say this but it is very unlikely that you will find any free file storage services that use FTP. And if you find anything free that uses FTP, it's likely not going to be for the purposes of file storage, and will state so in their TOS. You will probably only find some free (and rather unreliable) web hosting services in which their storage space is specifically for storing your website's files and using it for anything else will likely get your files deleted.

But you are not stuck with Google Drive and their software that doesn't seem to agree with your pc.

There are others, and their software may be more agreeable.

Here are the ones I have tried that seem to work ok for me (YMMV)...

1. You can try Dropbox, which gives you 2GB free to start, 2.5 if you use my referral link. This is the one I like the best for a lot of reasons...including using it with a WP plugin to make automatic weekly backups of your website's database and files and storing them offsite on both Dropbox and an external drive connected to my PC. ;)

2. You can try CX, which offers a personal Starter plan that is essentially the same as their 10GB Starter Plus plan, except that it's free, and you have to login at least once every 15 days to keep it activated. You can use my referral link to get an extra 300MB of space.

3. Or you can try SugarSync, which has a free plan that gives you 5GB free to start with, 5.5 if you use my referral link. One thing I do not like about this one is that it doesn't support external drives. I pretty much only use this one to store downloadable files for certain websites of mine in which I do not have storage options for anything other than images, with the web host. (Sharing the links to the files on SugarSync does give me some basic download stats, which is something I do not get if I share Dropbox links.)

All of these require you to install their software, which does autosync files. But none of them require you to run the software at all times. You can sync and exit. The only one I keep running at all times is Dropbox.  ;)

Living Room / Re: YouTube finally forces creation of google+ A/C to comment
« Last post by app103 on November 07, 2013, 01:30 PM »
I don't mind needing a G+ account to comment, since I rarely ever comment on youtube.

But what I do mind is how when I share a video on G+, or comment on a video on G+, all the comments from the videos will now appear on Youtube. And this is retroactive. And it also means that if anyone replies to a G+ imported comment thread on Youtube, it will now appear on the original thread on G+.

Be really careful what videos you share on G+. If the quality of the comments are poor on Youtube, or there is a whole lot of trolling and flaming going on, you can now expect that type of comments to spread to your G+ like a disease.

Is this just about commenting?

So, for people who don't care about commenting (and don't want Google+), could they maintain their dual identity?

Or is the writing on the wall?

In which case the only viable option for someone who don't want to merge it with their real name would be to delete their Youtube a/c, I presume (if that's even possible)?

I have a youtube account that is not associated with my real name/G+ account. Google forced a secondary G+ identity on me that exists as a Youtube channel under my main account. It allows me to keep them separated, but not have to deal with having 2 google accounts to do it.

I was thinking that the funny part wasn't the animation, but the fact that there was a bench in front of it so people could sit and admire...

Well, in her bedroom, across from the bed, would be a perfect place to put it, so she can stare at it instead of counting sheep. Hanging on a wall, it wouldn't take up any extra space on her end table, like a lava lamp would. :P

« Last post by app103 on November 05, 2013, 01:53 PM »
Do you have the file and is it located somewhere within your Windows folder?

If the file is there, try this:

  • Hold down your Windows key and tap the letter R
  • In the Run box, type this and hit enter: regsvr32 gdiplus.dll
  • Restart your computer.

This will register the file. Now try whatever app was giving you the error and see if it runs ok.

Nobody has seen Krishean lately. Maybe he finally succeeded in uploading himself and is busy infecting computers.

Ofc, if he did do that, people wouldn't be afraid as much as they would be amazed...and quite happy, once he fixed all the software bugs and optimized everything to run better, faster.  ;D

<Krishean> and i'm working on getting my consciousness uploaded lol, thats a long term project
<Krishean> i'd probably end up being a virus

WOOHOO!

I'm going to send them in a robot that unplugs computers! :D

Better to send them a robot that can also encase them in a solid block of concrete, buried deep underground, and then stands guard against anyone that comes along with any type of shovel, so nobody can plug them back in, access them, or even move them.  :P

Hey, maybe mouser can do it as a NANY project and call it Unplug + Bury And Guard Against Access Robot? (UBAGAAR)

Living Room / Re: Facebook Requiring Government ID?
« Last post by app103 on October 29, 2013, 05:18 PM »
And they had a provision in the system to check 'government issued IDs' already in place where it could be "accidentally" enabled...why exactly??

They got some explaining to do .. NSAy what?

They have it in place not just if your account gets hacked, so they can unlock it only for someone that can prove the account is theirs, but also in cases of fake names & multiple accounts under different/fake names.

According to their TOS, you are only allowed 1 account and you are supposed to use your real name. But some people create multiple accounts for spamming, game cheating, puppet accounts for harassing people, etc.

I had a friend that had 2 accounts, one for real life family & friends and the other for gaming. She didn't want to annoy her friends & family with a ton of game posts and she didn't want strangers she was adding as gaming friends to get all up in her personal business, so she made the second account to keep everything separated....and then both got locked.

Since she could only provide photo ID for the account with friends & family, she ended up permanently losing her gaming account. I had to teach her how to set up filters & lists to separate everyone and retain her privacy, while using just 1 account for everything. And even though she has it all working properly with 1 account now, she still had to start all over with all her games, and adding new gaming friends, because she lost them all and her progress in the games along with the 2nd account.

There were more from other forums, but I couldn't grab a screenshot of them, as they had already been deleted, most likely as spam.

Which name does "Dannel" prefer to be referred to as? Dannel, Janertt, Daphene, or Frankwer?

And before anyone defends him by saying "oh, well he copied most of that from that newsletter and maybe those other people did, too", I used the least likely to be part of a newsletter portion of the text to find these: "I got the newsletter from digiarty saying that they are running a great Halloween giveaway of their DVD ripping software".

How likely is it that there are multiple people with a verbatim train of thought that would use that exact text to start a post on various forums, referring to the same newsletter...for software that has a notorious history of being marketed via forum spam, the use of puppet accounts, posting fake reviews, extortion, uncredited use of open source code, etc., etc.?

It's Halloween. Trick or treat, you know! Get it or let it go, it's up to you :D

Personally, I'd let it go...it's a trick.  ;)

Just a heads up for anyone considering downloading or using any of the software from any of the links provided so far in this thread. All of the domain names mentioned so far have had incidents of spamming this forum.

They are all from one single company that is running under close to 30 different names, offering variations of the same software under just as many names.

The most recent spamming incident right here on our forum was less than a week ago, from wonderfox.

They have a long history of spamming and other despicable behavior, and this article from Macworld will explain more:

http://www.macworld....eaking_spammers.html

And I might even be inclined to believe the person that started this thread to be one of the company's many puppet accounts, after reviewing their posting history.

Echos my feelings about PaintShop Pro.

Version 6 was brilliant.  :-* Version 7 still ok.  :)

It was nothing but annoying after that. At least AFAIC.   :-\

I never used v6 but I adore v7  :-*, and I agree with you about every version afterward, especially any since Corel bought it.

Windows Media Player, which got destroyed somewhere between Win98 and WinME.

Winamp, which was destroyed in one of the updates to v5.

3M post-it Notes, I documented what happened with that, here.

I recently upgraded Ubuntu and wanted to smack myself for it.

The MSN/WLM --> Skype "upgrade" forced on everyone still has me fuming.

Can't speak for all but I've noticed a recent tendency on my machines for flv to lockup or misload in Firefox (under Linux) when watching YouTube vids - sometimes to the point where the only alternative was to download the vid and watch it with VLC.

But I suspect thats likely more a YT or FF issue.

Other than that, Flash videos seem to work just fine.

This...and it is fairly recent, like the last few weeks. And I believe it's a Youtube issue, as switching browsers when it happens doesn't seem to fix the issue, when I come across a video that stops dead and refuses to play or continue playing.

JS doesn't crash your browser or system.

Obviously you haven't tried surfing the modern web with a really old, low spec computer. There was a reason why I once contemplated creating my own browser that would default to the mobile versions of sites, on the desktop.  :P

And I discovered (by accident) in 2001 how to crash all versions of a certain browser, and cause a BSOD, with a tiny bit of seemingly normal, harmless JS.  :-[
