I also would like to learn more about this.  We tried creating one of those "free" certificates and now we have two certificate verifications to do.  <sigh>

General Software Discussion / Re: how to turn off XP's accessiblity options

From the wrong perspective... I don't think so.  This would be in a K-12 computer lab where students, mostly K-5, are using the computer to learn keyboarding or typing skills.  Most keyboarding programs require them to type a key multiple times in a row.  When these other options do start up it then causes the student other problems since the computer is not behaving the way its supposed to.

If we ever have a student with this type of a disability that would need one of these options, then all I would have to do is re-image the computer and then those options are back.  So I don't think we are breaking any laws (USA) since we do not have any students who require it.  We had a Kindergartner for a semester who had a severe handicap but it was too severe for her to do anything on the computer.  She passed away from these complications during her first semester.

Adults do not use these computers as they have their own to use.

No can of worms for me, glad you brought these to light.

I found this option just now but it doesn't seem to work very well. It has been serveral years since I have looked for a fix.  After deleting the folder in regedit but the "Accessibilty Options" in control panel still exist after a reboot.  and when I look at the registry key all that shows is the "Serial Keys".  I did try and so far nothing is coming on so maybe it is working.

Removing Accessibilty Options forever
Posted 5/29/2004 by TweakXP Member

Forget the other tweaks that mask or disable the accessibility options only to allow it to run again once scandisk, windows update or another slip of the keyboard puts them into full swing and you are resting your finger on the shift key and ... never mind-

To remove the Accessibility options FOREVER-

1. Start button/ Run type in regedit

2. find HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Accessibility options

3. Delete the Accessibility Options folder.

NOTE- If you feel like there will EVER be a time you will need these features do NOT delete the folder-

General Software Discussion / how to turn off XP's accessiblity options
« Last post by techidave on February 09, 2008, 03:39 PM »
I have been looking for a way to permanently turn off XP's Sticky Keys, Narrator, Magnifier, etc.  Since I work in a school and we have students using keyboarding software that require them to press the same key many times in a row.  I have went in and unchecked all the options, told it to ignore multiple presses of a key and those programs keep on starting.

Does anyone know of a way to keep these from starting?  I haven't found a way to uninstall them or keep them from installing in the first place.

Maybe this post is in the wrong place but didn't know where to place it.  Feel free to move it.

There are several things that "annoys" me about VSM.  It probably is customizable but for me it would take way to long to get it to something more to my liking.

The all black background.
different default order than the default XP start menu.
I don't find it easier to remember where things are at in VSM.

One of things I did like was the search bar.

In the mean time, I will keep trying the Launch Bar Commander unless I can find something else that strikes my fancy.

Check out the Reg Hacks on have on Viewing / Printing a folders contents.  Might be able to quickly modify for your needs:
http://www.veign.com/download_main.asp
(bottom of the page - Print Directory / View Directory)

Thanks Veign, this works really well for me.  the registry hack adds a right click print directory and there it is.

I haven't really weighed in here so will do so now: I like the start menu and don't think it's going anywhere, but I REALLY wish that Microsoft would innovate more with it. I think that Vista Start Menu is where they SHOULD have taken it with XP.

I am trying both Vista Start Menu and also Mouser's Launch Bar Commander on 2 different XP machines.   Vista Start Menu looks like Vista menu but I don't like saying this but... I hate it!  Its so annoying and I am ready to unistall it.  Perhaps its because I am not used to it.  LBC has a very nice layout, fast, but so far is a little harder to customize than I think it should be.

I am remembering the start menu is one of the things I didn't like about Vista last spring when I tried it.  Oh well, it will be a whlie before we implement Vista here at school.

Hello everyone,

My name is Dave and I live in western Kansas in a small town of 250 people called Burdett.  I don't remember exactly how I stumbled accross this site but have been reading it for a while before joining last month.  I am 54 years old and am the husband of one wife who is the mother of my 5 children.  We currently have 2 remaining at home.  We all like computers and are pretty much self taught with the exception of my wife who majored in programming in college back in the good ol' keypunch days.

Our first computer was the Tandy Color Computer with an external cassette recorder.  Then we graduated to a 386SX, then to a PII-233 in 1998.  from there I had a Athlon XP1800 and just recently built a 1.6 Dual Core computer.

I am in charge of IT at a small K-12 school district composed of 2 districts and 3 buildings in 3 different towns.  I handle the network, hardware, software and any other problems that come up.  When I came here in 2002 we had 45 computers, one server in 2 buildings.  Now we  have 250 computers, 10 servers in 3 buildings, so we are coming up in th world.  We now have 10 Macbook laptops for our high school yearbook and web design and I do not like them at all.  I also have one of them that also has Windows on it and for that I am thankful.  Enough said! :-[

In 1997 at 44 years of age, I answered a call of God to attend a bible school, Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, Tx.  How we got there is probably not for this post and if anyone is interested I can email this amazing story to you.  I did become an ordained minister, had a church for a year and half but am not currently pastoring at this moment.  But I am active in a church.

I have 2 grandsons living in Alvarado, Tx that we don't get to see all that much but I do not like the 9 hour drive it takes to get there.  We are 300 miles from Kansas City and Oklahoma City, 500 miles from Denver, Colorado and Dallas, Tx but only 140 miles form Wichita, KS.  So we are aways from any city of any decent size.  But its hard to get the country boy into the city (no, I am not a cowboy).

I do use FARR, Screenshot Captor, and some other programs from this site and I do APPRECIATE all the help everyone has given me and for putting up with my "silly" questions on how to do stuff.  I really appreciate the fact this site doesn't have a lot of the bad langauge and flame wars like some other sites that I used to read do.

Keep up the good work!

Dave

I have used PCI32 by Craig Hart in the past which has kept me from having to open the case.  It can be found here http://members.dataf...ft0802/downloads.htm, it has over 19,500 records in it.  It will give more info than Belarc Advisor does.

Living Room / A+ certification books and practice software
« Last post by techidave on February 02, 2008, 07:25 PM »
Not that having certification means anything to me but I am trying to climb the financial ladder of success.  I have been looking at study books trying to make heads or tails and see what the best one is.  Preferably it should have some sort of practice software included.

As far as repairing pc's i would consider myself in the intermediate range.  I am pretty much self taught in this area outside what I have learned from several close friends who know more than me.  I have been building, repairing computers for the last 6 years primarily in a school setting.

What do the gurus out there recomend?

How do I place an image (jpeg or bmp) into an email message using Outlook 2003?  I see others do it.  I would prefer a way to do it without using a third party software if possible.

When I try it, it gets added as an attachment.

thanks

I just downloaded this program.  It is much faster than the windows default viewer.  Is there anyway that I setup Thunderbird as my mail client instead of Outlook?  The software defaults to Outlook and I added Thunderbird as an external program but that didn't help either.

Any ideas?

that is correct.  I have set up restrictions using the net user routine but it won't log them off if they are already logged in.  So lets say I have "son" set to end at 9pm and would like for the logoff utiltiy to run at say 9:05pm and then in 5 minutes it would log him off at 9:10pm.

is this doable?

Living Room / log users off at a certain time using task scheduler
« Last post by techidave on January 27, 2008, 01:50 PM »
I have been trying to use the shutdown in a batch file to log a user off at a certain time but am having difficulties getting the switches right.  I am using shutdown -c-l 300 -m "Time restrictions are now forcing you to logoff in 5 minutes; please save all your work."  But the problem with this is it defaults to 60 seconds instead of 5 minutes.  It also grays out the option to cancel which is what I want.  If I reverse the c and l switch then it will do the 5 minutes but the cancel button is now active.  All I want it to do is log them off but this will shut the computer down instead.

The l switch is suppose to log off only and if I remove the m switch then i cannot get the 5 minutes and it shutsdown.

Any ideas on how to fix this?  Maybe this could be a coding snack?
