AT&T pushed out an OTA for the Samsung Galaxy S5 a week or two ago that patches the vulnerability as well.

However, I haven't heard anything about any pending fixes to Certifi-Gate, though.

This is why I only recommend GOG.com. The game is downloaded direct to your PC, no DRM, it's your forever, and you can log into your account to download the installer any time you wish if you happen to misplace it.

They don't have the Mafia series, though....sorry.

Hm...interesting. Could be a very serious bug if it affects other audio files as well (such as MP3s) as it could potentially affect every Android device that stores audio files on SD cards.

Regardless, hopefully it will be fixed soon.

However, following a Win10 update today, MS Money is now working perfectly again.
Kudos to MS for fairly swift action on this. I don't know whether the error was a bug, or if it only affected MS Money, but the effect of fixing it seems to indicate that MS is listening and just might be aware of the need to support this and other legacy applications in Win10.

This really isn't all that much different from how Android and iOS operate, but you expect that from phones and tablets that depend on the cloud for much of their functionality.  A personal computer is a different matter altogether.

I think you answered your own question. I think if Microsoft has their way then personal computers *will* have to rely on the cloud for much of their functionality. If you doubt me, ask yourself why can't we pick and choose which updates on Windows Update? Why does every update come across in one blob under the label "Cumulative Updates"? Even if you click the "WTH, MS!!! What did you just install?" link, you're redirected to a web page that has a non-sorted list of everything that's been updated since Windows 10 was released with no easy way to tell exactly what just got installed on your PC.

I agree with Stoic Joker that Delivery Optimization is an awesome tool to have available & while on the surface it seems weird that these same people don't have issue with torrents, but do with Delivery Optimization, the key difference is consent. When a person runs torrenting software they are making a conscious decision to do so. Delivery Optimization, on the other hand, is on and running with no notice given to the user.

I think if MS would have just put a radio checkbox in the installer that said "Turn this on if you'd like to speed up your Windows updates by downloading from alternate sources and PCs connected to the internet. Otherwise Windows will only download updates from Microsoft which will result in potentially slower updates." then everyone would be fine with it. This doesn't strike me as being a technology or capability issue. It's an issue of transparency.

Came into this thread to say what michaelkenward said. Every Windows 10 key you'll find in PC registries is the same key.

When I installed Windows 10 clean, I just skipped every prompt for a product key during installation & I booted into a fully activated Windows 10. No key entry is needed.

Annnnndddddd....this behavior just spontaneously started working out of the blue last night. Windows 10 works in mysterious ways.

I'm glad all my irritants are solving themselves one by one, but I'd like to know the how/why of the solutions rather than just materializing out of nothing.

The new screen could use some improvement, but it is far, far better than the installation screens of yore where you're sitting at what looks to be a static DOS-type screen & the only indicator anything is going on a status bar line at the bottom of screen displaying text that this file got copied....all rendered in a fuzzy font that was rescued from 1983.

It has a few quirks that most people won't see. As long as you make sure all your apps and drivers are Windows-10-aware you should be fine. I had a few speed bumps, but some Google searches got things going. Now that everything is configured, I like it better than I liked 8.x...maybe not as much as I liked 7, but I'm not completely used to it yet.

While I understand everyone's privacy concerns, especially people who have never owned a cell phone, the simple truth of the matter is that the general public does not care that their privacy is being violated. Owning something that makes their life easier is all they care about.

Trying to resist going on a full-on rant here, but even when you sit down with them, connect all the dots, and prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that this erosion of privacy is not a good thing for anybody, they just shrug their shoulders and say they don't care.

As for the Chinese, they say there are two types of businesses in the world: the ones that have been hacked by the Chinese and the ones that don't realize they have been hacked by the Chinese.

Must be a graphic card driver issue on my side then. I only see hover/highlight color changes when a program is open and has that blue underscore line under the icon image. I'll be patient then. It'll eventually be fixed.

I don't think we're stuck. Enterprising, smart people are analyzing Windows 10 and everything it brings us as we speak. Sooner or later someone is going to bring us a program that will ask us a few questions about what we want to get out of Windows 10 and then will make all the registry changes needed to turn on or off the privacy-threatening bits that offer or take away 'enhanced' functionality.

I'm also sure someone will make an app that will reliably suspend the Windows Update service & hopefully, allow us to pick & choose which updates to install & which ones to blacklist. Until MS makes the registry a black box users cannot pick apart and analyze, there will always be intrepid souls who will work to leverage it in the users' favor.

I think this is a fair statement. I also think this is the way they had to go. They have to embrace the post-desktop PC world while still appealing to their core audience so they don't lose customers. If they went any other way they would have been criticized far more than they are being currently.

As for me, now that I have conquered the problems I've encountered during my install, Windows 10 is settling into being a very solid OS for me. The only thing that nags at me now is clicking icons on the taskbar offers no visual feedback one has clicked them as previous versions of Windows have done. It's a minor nit, but still a little weird to see.

This is very true. Suppose it depends on what products of theirs you are interested in. I liked the looks of ObjectBar. Abandoned. I also liked Fences Pro, but internet searches reveal that bugs that have been in the product since the beginning are still there and largely ignored by the programmers.

I guess I am always interested in the wrong Stardock products. That and the fact their president is a misogynist.

I don't like how Stardock does business. They spew forth a ton of different programs and don't address bugs. The only time you see a new release is when they have a paid upgrade & it'll have its own set of bugs.

The only program I've seen them update with any frequency & with any commitment to fixing bugs is their WindowBlinds product. Do people even use that anymore?

Even stranger yet (while home machine worked fine), the GS button on my comp here at the office is greyed out...yet both were upgrades with the same x64 MSDN.iso Now the other guy here in IT has an active GS button...he too upgraded with the same x64 MSDN.iso - All machines mentioned are Pro Ed. domain members.

Mystery solved....I had turned Diagnostic and Usage Data Sent to Microsoft to Basic. This setting must be set to Enhanced or above in order for the Get Started button to become active.

Makes sense as MS would want enhanced diagnostic data if someone were using Insider updates.

I haven't checked into it extensively yet, but I imagine our smart phones are passing along more information to The Man than any desktop OS ever will. Unless you're walking around with the battery pulled and only put it back in for as long as you need to use the phone & not a second longer, your phone is capable of telling somebody where you are every second of every day its with you. Where you drive, where you shop, where you spend most of your time....and The Man can monitor this (and more) even if the phone is turned off.

Most of this privacy stuff is all over MS needing collect information to customize the OS to you (and the ads, too). I half-suspect that all the legal jargon in the EULA that has people up in the arms is just CYA boilerplate in case a government agency drops a subpeona on a Microsoft executive's desk.

Just my theory...could totally be wrong, though, as I haven't had time to dig deep into it yet.

I wanted to post the solution for my "network was configured as public when the darn thing should have been configured as private problem" just in case anyone else runs into it and needs a solution....and because it was so hard for me to find!

The type of the network can changed in the registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\

Category:

0 = Public

1 = Private
