Me thinks I'll be sticking with f00der's fskrit & OpenDNS.

@IainB
I opened the link in Opera and IE and the only adware/spyware related thing on that page is google analytics. No popups / ads.

Just did a minor update to the review details in the opening post (now re version 5.2, as at 2012-04-30).
Thank you for this review, IainB. FreeFileSync installer is now powered by OpenCandy.
@PhilB66. I knew that, but had forgotten to add it in to the review update. Thanks for reminding me! Done now.
Good. There is no mention of OpenCandy on the FFS Website. Its SF page and the Readme file too fail to mention OC. I do not mind the "new" ad-supported installer trend at all but the developer should make it public knowledge. When it is done in a sneaky way, my trust is gone. I dumped FFS for that reason.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Rarma Radio (Raimersoft) - Mini-Review
« Last post by PhilB66 on April 26, 2012, 08:23 PM »
@Renegade

Listen, you can try to twist my words, put smiley faces all over the place, whatever, but let me tell you, neither IainB nor the mini-review is the issue (never was, and not going to be), so stop implying otherwise.

Fact is that Raimersoft (the developer) does not inform users about the ad-supported installer, there is no license agreement/consent for the BetterInstaller product/service, and the Installer's "opt-out" mechanism is tricky by design. Not everyone who will be reading this review / following its recommendation is behind a a two-way firewall, technically sophisticated, etc. etc., hence a warning should be added.

Search for BetterInstaller, Somoto, DealBulldog to see that it does way more than just recommend software.

@IainB The folders names in %Temp% are unique. The the third one (which you did not get) has these files in it:

_isetup (folder), check.xml, itdownload.dll, temp.html, BetterInstaller.exe, and bi.exe

temp.html is a script to 'Like' the application on Facebook and check.xml is for a pre-offering checks (registry scan) for the following:
- Babylon (and BabylonToolbar)
- Incredimail (and Incredibar)
- Somoto (and SomotoToolbar)
- SweetIM

The install did try to phone home, but my Windows 7 Firewall Control trapped that and I did not enable it.

True, if you block the installer, you will not get the BetterInstaller adware, junk offers, Facebook script, etc. I still think you should include a warning about the installer in your review.

All the products on raimersoft download page are powered by BetterInstaller (an OpenCandy type installer) but without the users knowledge/consent. The installer also leaves BetterInstaller.exe behind.

Hint: launch the installer and check your AppData\Local\Temp folder

The "Notification Area" icons can be with 16x16, 20x20, and 24x24 pixel versions only.

Read all you ever wanted to know about the Notification Area in this article.

I saw in Windows Explorer of Windows7 a search field at the top right, that also searches inside the content of the files of the folder (even xls files, etc)

There's also Pending File Moves:

Pending File Moves is really simple application that displays a list of pending file rename/delete operations, that take place the next time the system boots.

Living Room / Internet - from the 1990's point of view

Trine Gallegos hosts this segment shot in 1995 when the Internet was first becoming an icon. This is an interesting look back at how clunky the applications were. I don't even think they were using a computer mouse yet.

Y'know, it kind of makes a good case for countries to have a "CI" page on a web site - Country Image instead of Corporate Image.
Kazakhstan should. Similar blunder happened earlier this month.

Living Room / Kazakhstan's glorious anthem mishap
« Last post by PhilB66 on March 24, 2012, 09:44 AM »
This is just unbelievable... a spoof version from the 2006 satirical movie Borat was played at the 10th Arab Shooting Championship in Kuwait instead of the Kazakhstan's national anthem.
