My understanding of the suggested procedure is that it requires a tedious line by line review of the entire document (unless I was not doing it correctly) and I gave up.  However, I would describe typical document fonts as follows:

- Draft document before removal of rogue font types:  2 or 3 font types,  with one or two font sizes.

- Final document after removal of rogue font types: 1 font type with two font sizes, as well as some All Caps of the same font

Word 2003.  This example is about 7 pages long including two pages with tables and figures with caption.  They usually start as an existing document (template) but several rogue editors add comments and cut and paste stuff through several iterations of review.

I often realize, too late, that I have published documents created in MS Word, that unexpectedly contains mixed font types and or sizes (e.g., a few unwanted Arial sentences in the middle of a Veranda document).

Is there a way to search for font types and/or sizes in an MS Word document other than scanning with the naked eye?

I am also color blind so it would be nice if it could search for font colors but this would be a secondary requirement.

Deozaan, I use the Outlook calendar along with Remind-Me http://www.beiley.co.../remind-me/desc.html.  It's not free but it does all or most of everything that you mentioned, and it automatically syncs with Outlook (separate option must be purchased).  You can use it for alarms, events and recurring items which can send an email notification and or pop-up or alert.  If you get a a meeting 'invitation' in Outlook it will automatically be added to the Remind-Me calendar, if you bought the sync option.  I find it useful as a quick reference rather than depending on all the bloated stuff in Outlook.

If I knew how, I would change the vote.  But you could also think of it this way.  In the end, when the statistics are compiled, a vote for 'Never' is like a 'No +' , whereas a 'Sometimes' is like a 'Yes - '.   Will that suffice?

I use 7-Zip (the application) because it has proven reliable and fast for quite a while, and I use it constantly at work to sling files off to clients and fellow employees.

I'm not sure whether I'd prefer a special DC discount for the upgrade, or a 7-zip plug-in....Hmmmmm.  Scratch that, I would definitely prefer the 7-zip plug-in which has been talked about on the DO forum for a long time but never seems to go anywhwere.

I am glad to see that my initial inquiry has generated some good discussion but it has confused the heck out of me.  I have a significant quantity of large pdf's that I keep as permanent reference on my laptop that are indexed and searchable.  Since I spend a great deal of time on the road, I am highly sensitive to bloating the hard drive.

Many of the pdf's I keep on disk have been sent to me (created by other people) or downloaded from the net so I have little control over the fact that someone else was inefficient in creating the original PDF.

What I find so distressing is that my software tests gave exactly the opposite result that Darwin found.  In other words, my limited testing indicated that PdfCompressor 3.1 kicked butt, while PDF-DocPro was completely ineffective.  I will do some additional testing and report back.

On a related note, while I was searching for a program to compress large PowerPoint files, I came across another (more affordable) gem called NXPowerLite http://www.nxpowerli...e.com/index.php?ld=n.  This program will dramatically shrink PowerPoint as well as Word documents.  What appeals to me most is that it retains the native file format (e.g. .ppt, .doc., .xls) so the file can be edited at a later date.

I downloaded a trial version of pdf-DocPro and it would not compress any of my test files by more than a few %.  I had already tried the free PDF Compressor without much luck.  This other program (PdfCompressor 3.1) will crush a 10 to 20 Meg + pdf file by well over 50% and the resulting quality is very impressive.  Too bad it's so damn expensive.

urlwolf, I also use SB so I want to make sure I uderstand your comment.   Do you mean to say that the recovery will restore ALL the files, including the incremental backups whereas you would like the ability to restore only the incremental portion of the backup set?  Did I get that right because now I am worried that I may have lsot some files during a recent restore operation.

For highlighting, I strongly recommend Hilitext at http://www.fanix.com/hilitext.html  :Thmbsup:.  It highlights words in all kinds of media and documents inlcuding Word, pdf files, txt and web pages. Options allow for match case or not match case, and complete word match or partial match.  ...You can even download the last free version if you know where to look. ;)

I have been using 7-Zip which has always been free and Open Source.   And I was under the impression it has greater compression ratio than WinRAR, especially with multiple files .  Can someone set me straight?

The main features of 7-Zip:

I have used Fix It Utilities registry fixer for several years on different laptops and never had any problems, provided that you remove only those recommended by default (and I never tried to delete any others). :up:

I have recently been using the trial version of jv16 Power Tools.  When it finishes scanning, I have been choosing "Select all" and then "Fix".  I find that jv16 PT comes up with a much longer list of items to delete.  SO far have not had any problems. :up:

I have always run them in the manual mode.

The bigger and more important question that I cannot answer is how much better or worse things would be if I had not flushed them to begin with. :-\
