ProcessTamer / Re: Processes running as IUSR_SERVER
« Last post by Sentinel on July 01, 2005, 03:47 PM »
It appears I was dead wrong on this.  I'm *still* waiting for some accurate feedback from Microsoft (and I do have some very good contacts there - yet it appears their own OS is a little complex for them ;) ).  It appears that it is possible for sessions owned by a user other than that which spawned a process can legitimately alter a processes settings.  Some of  this may be due to Local Security Settings, but I think some of it may be the result of features added to Windows in more recent times, such as 'Show processes from all uses'.  The fact that Process Tamer cannot see these appears to be the first stumbling block.

Mouser, it may be worth mailing JC from Bitsum (some excellent products for anyone interesting in EXE compression or process handling) to see how he avoided this problem with Process Lasso.

Discounts on software are excellent, quality donationware is also excellent, as is a forum to discuss the best software in any given field.  I feel that perhaps new forms of advertising (I had problems thinking of a more appropriate term) should be found to really get this across to potential new members though.  I joined not so much for the discounts, but for the excellent coding work Mouser had done.  I now realise that this was only a fraction of the benefits I would get here as a member.  I think we have to think of new and inventive ways of getting across the true range of benefits to prospective members to convince others to invest in such a worthy project.

Poll of members, of course  ;)

Whatever could you mean?  :o

Although I don't mind polling anyone!  ;)

id bet my life there is a freeware tool out there that monitors free space and can be told to run an app or email you on full disk.

I'd bet not.  What do I win?  ;)

I've looked long and hard and haven't found anything that quite fits the bill.  Definately a Coding Snacks cadidate I think.

Yes, poll is the way to go...

Yes, I rather like the idea of a poll.  Although this probably does panda to popularist appeal.  ;)

Be glad it is VMWare you are using with Outpost.  I use Virtual PC for work purposes and find making Outpost rules for it a complete nightmare as all network communication is handled by a shared service as "svchost.exe".  Try making a rule for that without opening a whole can of worms.  :(

Living Room / Re: Scripting utility suggestions?
« Last post by Sentinel on July 01, 2005, 01:09 PM »
I can confirm that both Automate and 4NT (my personal choice) are very good scripting utilities (though rather different uses).  Python is also meant to be rather good and is free.  Wintasks is massively overpriced and overrated in my opinion - A product without a real purpose.

Ultimately I guess it depends on exactly what you are trying to script.  ;)

I find "Empty Recycle Bin" from http://www.optimumx.com/ is rather good (and free).

Unfortunatly you still have to provide the determination for when your recycle bin is "full".  That is where 4NT comes in.  ;)  http://www.jpsoft.com

I thought you were going to give me all of your money, then I find you are talking about backups. :-(

Thankfully I make nightly backups to another HD device, bi-weekly backups to DVD and weekly backups to DAT tape.

All thanks to Genie Backup Manager Pro.  It's safe to say that I love it as much as I hate it. ;-)

Unfortunately I believe it is the latter, but I'll confirm this from one of my contacts at Microsoft.

I get a feeling that running the Tray as a service will only fix the problem for the user account that the service runs as (either LocalSystem or whichever credentials are specified for the service).  This should be ok for taming specific applications such as IIS on a dedicated server, but will not be a universal solution for machines running processes as many different users.  Citrix/Terminal Services is probably the best example of multiple users running processes this way.

I'll test this at work on Citrix and a 2003 application server and post some conclusive results tonight.

Yes, the only way for Process Tamer to control processes running as other users is to run a copy of Process Tamer as that user, so it has the ability to interact with that particular users processes.

As mouser said, you may be able to run the tray program as a service.  Alternatively you could run the process directly using 'runas'.  If you want the tray program to run automatically as a different user every time you start your server you could use RunAsPro or TQCRunAs.  I don't think that it is possible to run multiple copies of the ProcessTamerTray.exe, so it will only work for one user at the time.  That is unless mouser adds an option to run multiple instances.  ;)

TQCRunAs http://www.quimeras.com
RunAs Professional http://www.mast-comp...er.com/c_9-l_en.html
MakeService http://www.bitsum.com/ (I've found this to work well in the past and it is free!)

I hope this is of some help.

Best E-mail Client / Re: ASRT 5/14/05 - EMAIL CLIENT
« Last post by Sentinel on May 10, 2005, 01:09 AM »
You can edit received message with a little hack in The Bat!

If you move a message from the Inbox to the Outbox, you can double click it to open it in the editor and put it back in the outbox when you're done editing. Then move it back to the Inbox again.

It does seem to change the dates in the headers though, but that's the price for a hack I guess .

Jibz, that is horrible!  :-[

I'm still gonna give it a go though.  Thanks!

Mouser, if you've ever had to deal with Qualcomm support you'll see why nobody uses Eudora any more.  ;)

I'm still using Eudora http://www.eudora.com as it has excellent mail filtering, decent protection against viruses & phishing attacks, the best 3rd party spam blocking around http://www.spamnix.com and the single most important feature that no other mail package seems to have - editing of incoming mail.  I often like to edit incoming mail to add extra information or highlight a key area (such as a serial number) so it is easy to find in future.

If it wasn't for the editing I probably would have changed to 'The Bat!' ages ago as Eudora updates are expensive and startup is sloooowww if you have thousands of messages.

Outlining/note-taking gets my vote too as there are so many good ones to choose from, so making a choice is rather tough.

The main factors that matter to me include: Focused (uncluttered but powerful) interface, flexibility, resident abilities (minimise to tray on close, small memory footprint, auto-save on minimise etc.), import/export and of course, price.

I'd almost certainly buy AM-Notebook Pro if it were half the price, despite infrequent updates, as it appears to best fit my criteria.  It's just too expensive for what it is though.

Oh yes, we mustn't forget GoldenSection Notes (A cut-down targetted version of WinOrganizer) which is also a rather nice product.

Win some - lose some.  As a lifetime license customer of UltraEdit I can assure anyone considering purchasing it that they will not regret it, discount or not.

Thanks for trying though Mouser, your efforts are always appreciated.

Defragmentor would be top on my list right now... so many options, but no real way to tell if they give what they claim.

Yes there is a lot of fud in this area and an awful lot of fanboys for each product.  I'm pretty certain this should make any review rather contentious, no doubt leading to a rather interesting discussion. :)

It might also be worth considering reviewing Spyware cleaning apps, especially as more than one is required to give any kind of real protection and these days you are much more likely to be a victim of spyware than of a virus.

Trojan cleaners/protectors may also be worth looking at, as is disk encryption.

If there were a single piece of software I couldn't live without, it would have to be 4NT from http://www.jpsoft.com

It is an excellent cmd.exe console replacement for Windows with more features than you can shake a stick at.  Great for UNIX bash/tcsh addicts, batch programmers and anyone with an aversion to these weird clicky gui things, like me.

There is a lot of other stuff I also use on a daily basis, but I'll save that for another time.  ;)

Best Text Editor / UltraEdit 11 - Best text editor?
« Last post by Sentinel on April 24, 2005, 07:52 AM »
Another excellent Saturday review.  I've been a user of UltraEdit for many years and find it indispensible for day to day text editing use, such as logs, ini files, reg exports, config files, generic text and program dumps.  From my viewpoint the main strengths in its favour is its small size, fast handling of files of all sizes, unicode support, ability to run self-contained from a USB memory stick and cheap(ish) price.  I almost forgot to mention, the support is fantastic and IDM are always willing to listen (and often implement) new suggestions.  It also has a lively support forum with expert users who are always willing to help with any aspect of the program.

For developing I find the compiler integration and flexibility of MultiEdit a much better choice.  Almost the entire product is based on compilable macros with the source included.  It is expensive though, so unless you are going to spend a lot of time using it or your company is paying, it can be rather tough to justify the price.  Unfortunately it *still* doesn't support unicode format files despite myself and others requesting it over many years.

We'll see how well IDM competes with the upcoming version of UltraEdit for Programmers, UltraStudio.

Another interesting point regarding UltraEdit is IDM also offer an unlimited upgrades version for around the same cost of a single upgrade to MultiEdit ($100 approx).  I don't think you'll ever regret paying that much for a lifetime of support and updates.

Thanks for letting me express my viewpoint on such a great site!  :)
