Eudora was always pretty good.

Not perfect, but the new beta is still pretty good.  8)

Very minor stuff still needs attention though: the Eudora beta forgets that it's supposed to always start in the inbox (e.g., if you close after perusing a different email folder once, Eudora beta remembers to start in that folder for the next few startups). No show stoppers though.

Any reasons to switch yet ?  I definitely do not want to lose the robust
filtering and any searching capabilities, or any stability.

I think I would delay any switch yet. I've encountered some minor stability issues on two machines that took some time to surface (as might be expected with a beta version). I started testing Sylpheed's beta for comparison and it is superior IMHO. (Sylpheed takes a little getting used to though.)

Yesterday iPrint v6 was released free for business and/or personal use at http://www.clicktoconvert.com/iPrint/

I've been using it for several months and it's rock solid on WinXP. A really decent way to save on printing costs. :Thmbsup:

I really like this kind of software (saves me considerable on toner). aardvark works great in Firefox, but its bookmarklet is problematic in Opera. Fortunately, Printliminator works OK in Opera.

"Eudora 8" is based on Thunderbird v3 (not TB v2) + Penelope.

Now I'm scratching my head about the incompatible Adblock extension. Since I use ad muncher on my main machine it is not an immediate problem. Possibly this is just an issue with the beta version.

The name Eudora 8 is a mistake - it's actually Thunderbird v2(I doubt its v3)  + Penelope extension to make it resemble Eudora v7.

Well, I guess that explains why Eudora chokes on recent Thunderbird extensions (e.g., AdblockPlus).

Anyway, thanks for the heads up about MailForge.

Back in the day Eudora was indeed payware. $40 if I remember correctly.

$40! How times change. Eudora's new beta sports some interface tweaks that I like--such as no solo tabs--but no sea change from Thunderbird 3.

Back in the day, I think Eudora was payware so I used Outlook Express. Now Eudora is open source.  :Thmbsup:

The Bat! was also high on my list of apps to try.  (I may still take it for a spin.)

I didn't especially care for the new Thunderbird interface in WinXP (I use claws in linux) so I downloaded Eudora 8.0b7 at http://www.eudora.com/betas/

This Eudora beta is built on Thunderbird anyway, but I *really* like it. :-*  No stability issues here and very easy to configure.

I can't believe there isn't an Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala thread yet.

I've been experimenting with the minimal install suggested at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal for karmic and my pc really flies (Dell Dimension 3000; 3 GHz; 1 GB RAM).  :Thmbsup:

Frankly, I triple boot this machine (WinXP, CrunchBang & Ubuntu 9.10). For ordinary surfing--read: security--you can't beat linux; OTOH, some online video really works better from a WinXP platform (e.g., divx). Moreover, certain applications like BitWare, Spider, etc., keep me booting up WinXP everyday as well.

(a) No. I like linux, but applications like BitWare have nothing comparable in linux so I run two WinXP boxes as well.
(b) Win7 looks pretty good. I expect MS will keep it around for awhile.
(c) definitely only when I need another machine

Chrome is my default browser for WinXP (even though I mostly use Firefox 3.5.1 with Sandboxie & noscript for casual surfing). Nothing beats Chrome in my experience for speed when I access my email newsletter/webzine links from Google via Thunderbird.

Anyone have any insight, experiences or suggestions?

I upgraded my Dell Dimension 3000 from intrepid to jaunty this week. Everything was cool until I went to the Archeology Channel. The upgrade borked my multimedia big-time. Flash was easy enough to fix; I installed RealPlayer and that took care of anything with real or wmv format; mpg format (among others), however, was a no-go. Consulted the forums--nothing.

OTOH, the experience was not altogether negative: I wiped the drive and installed CrunchBang. Totally works.  :Thmbsup:

(I'll check on 9.04 again after it goes final.)
