My current workaround:
0. drop sync (at least for now) since I'm migrating to a new device.
1. Export entries from OLD device (let's name it OLD.json), transfer it to new device.
2. Export default entries from NEW device (let's name it NEW.json).
3. Using text editor (I'm using QuickEdit in this case, for its ability to handle text encoding) to do following:
3-1. Open OLD.json
3-2. Select all content.
3-3. Copy (into system clipboard)
3-4. Open NEW.json
3-5. Select all content.
3-6. Paste (from system clipboard) to replace all content.
3-7. Save NEW.json
4. Import NEW.json. Since the file permission is kept, there is no permission issue reading its content.
5. That's it. Done.

So it seems more like a permission issue.

Multi-device sync stopped working when dropbox api stopped working.. That's probably not something easily fixed.

No no, I'm not using dropbox to sync. I'm using own sync tool option (DriveSync with Google Drive account in this case).
I suspect that it's JSON parse error problem. I can provide my cbsyncdata file if that help.
Otherwise it may be the read permission issue?

There are some problem in v2.26 I encountered:

1. Crash: Preferences -> Advanced Settings -> Item Date format
2. Failed to get permission: android.permission.READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Import data from file
3. Failed to get permission: android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE: Export data to file
4. Import data from file (from other/older/working devices) won't work even using internal storage. The file doesn't show up in the selection screen. Only files exported from the same device show up.
5. Import data from url doesn't work. There is no detail message. It downloads file but imports no entry.
6. Multi-Device Synchronization (Public folder and own sync tool) doesn't work. It keep saying everything is in sync but it's not.

Recently I switch to a Sony mobile phone running Android 14 and find out that WhenLast won't work on it. (It keeps crashed.)
Now I have to keep my old phone on my desk just for using WhenLast.

Is there any chance that WhenLast will get an update to newer versions of Android system?

I find out an workaround to this issue.

If I delete all visible items first (so that there is no item at all) then any import/sync operation crashes.
But if I add any random item first (so that it is not empty) then import/sync operation works.

BTW, how about make a Google Drive sync? Since it runs on Android system.

Hummm, WhenLast (on new device) crashes while importing file, exporting file, or sync with Public folder.
I already granted WhenLast the permission to use storage.

Android Apps / Problem getting When Last sync with Dropbox

I recently get a Samsung Galaxy Tab Active2 with Android 9 system.
I install When Last (v2.21) app from Google Play Store, delete all visible (default) items then set to sync with Dropbox, authorize with Dropbox (app version 170.2.8, installed from Google Play Store) with Dropbox Plus (paid) account. But it does not sync yet.
Status report: Waiting for initial Dropbox sync to complete. I know it takes a while, but it takes already 3 full days.
It's been years since last time I set up When Last sync with Dropbox (on another ancient Android tablet). I don't remember how long it shall need to initial Dropbox sync.
Please help!

I also noticed that the datehistory entry is (likely) in localized format.

date history is just a bunch of text.  The only thing that the program ever uses for computations is just the single most recent date, and that is stored as utc.

As for an ipad/ios version -- i keep meaning to tinker with some ios coding, though my past experiences trying to code for mac's when i was a kid was traumatic

But I'm not sure it will be anytime soon that I work on an ios version of whenlast..

I also noticed that the datehistory entry is (likely) in localized format.
In theory, won't that cause problem when syncing between two devices with different locale setting?
I can live with that for now, but wish I can change it as YYYY/MM/DD format or so, and using 24-hour format.

I am too a silent WhenLast user for many years. I am loving it. In fact, I haven't seen any app that can beat it across all systems.
Too pity that WhenLast is available for Android system only.
Recently my Android device start failing me. My alternative device on hand is an iPad mini and some Windows laptops.
Is it possible for you to make iOS or Windows version of WhenLast available? Or better, make them sync via Dropbox?
I sure am willing to donate to support this. For WhenLast saves my days more than once.
