So far I'm not seeing any issues on my XP Box, but use at your own risk.

I've been using it since I got my XP Pro machine several years ago, and on another XP Home machine I occasionally use.  Have had no problems at all.

552
And I use a simple utility to swap the Control, Alt, and Capslock keys to put them back where they belong system wide.
...have a link?

I think I got this from the Windows Resource Kit:

RemapKey Version 0.99g2
Copyright (C) 1996-1999 by Hirofumi "Hiro" Yamamoto

But I've seen several others out there in a Google Search.

They all work the same way, changing Registry Settings, Current User
or Current Machine, I think.  You have to reboot or log off then back
on but then the keys stay remapped even when the machine is rebooted
until you re-set them.

I haven't gone thru every single point he's made, but I have both Word and Boxer Text Editor customized to use WordStar (or similar) keyboard commands across the board.  Plus I have VBA macros to do more complicated things assigned to other keyboard shortcuts in Word.

And I use a simple utility to swap the Control, Alt, and Capslock keys to put them back where they belong system wide.

I don't even like reaching for the backspace key.  That's what Ctrl-h is, and always has been, for.  AutoHotkey does that system-wide.

I'd be surprised if all of WordStar's functionality couldn't be duplicated in addition to having the power that the newer programs offer.

(also use most of the same keyboard shortcuts in Excel, but you have to use VBA onkey to assign keys to other than Ctrl-letters, and AutoHotkey for shortcuts while editing cells since macros don't work then).

DialogMove v1.8.93 updated 10-12-06:

The occasional problem that I was having where a window jumped that wasn't supposed to, either shrinking or not, seems to have gone away.

Do you thing the revised code (which I didn't really look over) is responsible?

There's a Display setting, under Appearances>Effects, that toggles "show window contents while dragging".  If you turn this off, is this what you want?

That does seem nice alright, but $60 is a bit expensive for an editor.

It's shareware, so you get to try it out to decide if it's worth $60.  Over the last 14 years, including discounted upgrade charges, it's probably worked out to 2-3 cents/hour for me.

Been using Boxer for years, couldn't live without it  The author is completely accessible, like the people around here.

Very nice, thanks!

Recent doesn't record opened and closed windows.

You're right.  I played with this and I had to open a file in the opened folder to have the folder's shortcut appear in Recent.

A utility to show recent windows would be pretty useful...

562
The Recent folder (\Documents and Settings\<username>\Recent) shows shortcuts to mru files *and* folders, even though the Start Menu "My Recent Documents" only shows the files.

Not elegant, but a shorcut to the Recent folder at least would give you a quick list.

I find VirtualDimension to be the best virtual desktop utility.  It has the best interface I've seen for switching between desktops and for controling which applications go on which desktop.  Also, I like how it syncs the Windows taskbar with whatever virtual desktop you're viewing.

VirtualDimension gets my vote also.

564
I'm running more AHK scripts than I used to, 8 including DialogMove.  I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

565
As for your other request, i'm right now working on it!

That's great news.

btw, I've been periodically getting the "window shrinks to very short Titlebar" syndrome.  It seems to happen sometimes when I close a dialog box which was moved properly, and then the focus goes to the next open window.  That window shrinks, and because it is small, it then jumps to the cursor.  Once in a while, an unshrunk window that gains focus will jump to the cursor.  None of it happens often enough to make me even think about not using DialogMove.  I'm 95% positive in all cases it only happens when I close a moved Dialog box.

566
the previous suggestion of dialog jumping so that highlighted button rests under cursor is really what i'd like to see implemented.

That would be especially slick.

567
instead of the dialog window 'jumping' to the mouse cursor position, how about the dialog window was seen to move to the cursor position, i.e. there was a little bit of animation involved - say one or two steps that the window would travel along a path until it landed under the cursor.

i can imagine this looking quite nice if it was smooth enough but it would probably look horrible if it was too jerky.

Myself, I kinda like the instantaneous automagical appearance of the dialog box under my cursor.  Even months later an occasional "damn that's neat" still comes out.

568
The little I use the Start Menu, it's not worth me looking for an alternative.

My problem is with any kind of "fly out" menu, that when I'm moving quickly, the mouse can excape the menu and then I have to start all over.  I have several toolbar menus and the Quickstart menu that I do use often.

So if skrommel figures out a way to fence the mouse in, it would be slick.

569
I stumbled across this:

http://www.autohotkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=50920

I commented out the titlebar middleclick options because all I was interested in was closing a window by middle clicking on its taskbar button.  Seems to work ok so far.

570
i look forward to seeing the result.

me too

A shortcut to an application will almost always open a compatible file dropped on it.

I have a shortcut on my desktop whose target is "C:\pgms\lister.exe", which I drop text files on to read.  My default "open" for a text file is a text editor, Lister is just a reader.

Sometimes you have to add a %1 to the target.

Oh, wait a second.  Sounds like you want *one* "Run" icon that will open any file with it's default executable (.doc with Word, .xls with Excel, etc.).  So you'd need a program that would find the files default in the registry and then take it from there.  I bet it could be done, but it's beyond me.

I've been using virtual desktops for years, find them quite handy.

Recently stumbled across Virtual Dimension, freeware, works better
than what I was using so I switched.  Been a few weeks, no problems.

I tried it quickly the other day and couldn't get it to work either, but I thought it might have something to do with the configuration of my scroll wheel/middle button.

So I fooled with the configuration, but still nothing happens when I middle click a taskbar button.

574
Good idea!  (I have Donation Credits burning a hole in my virtual pocket...)

I won't be able to spend any real time playing with this for a day or two, but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to identify the names of the Controls I want to fence in.

One set of menus I am interested in is the All Programs fly-out menus.  I'm constantly mousing too far to the right and losing my selection, instead ending up in the second column of All Programs when I wanted to stay in a sub-group of the first column.
