Hi timns - this looks like a very nice and useful tool!

However, I am having serious problems using Dutch regional settings and the US International keyboard. This keyboard allows me to easily use characters like ë in words like cliënt (the quotation/double quotation key becomes a dead key - you type "e to get ë). But Auspex does not feel happy about this. In fact, when Auspex is running, the dead keys no longer work - hitting the " key generates "".

Also, replacement strings with dead characters get mangled: the replacement string cliëntenraad gets rendered as cli¿enraad in the UI after closing and restarting Auspex, and generates clienraad when actually replacing. Also, sometimes the arrow keys suddenly start generating card symbols (cannot reproduce this reliably).

Hope this helps - keep up the good work!

I really need to mention OneNote 2010 here. Its implementation of live search -or whatever it's called- is pretty impressive. Also pretty essential in a note-taking application like OneNote.

there was an emphasis on not making it a door stop
The modern ones don't become door stops - they become paper weights instead: progress! ;)

By the way, DaddyDave, I don't know if you use OneNote at all, but I have recently written a similar utility to quickly create a OneNote note. See https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=23622.0.

jpijper:
My first stop when looking for Outlook tools is always Slipstick, specifically the add-ins page. I think you should give Sue a link to it, if she posts it there, I think more people will know about it. I plan on doing the same for TaskDaddy a little later. Notice there are lot of links in the Tasks section, but when you check them out, you see a lot of them are out of date. And I would suggest letting people know you can use it from the command line as well as FARR.

I can picture Lifehacker or the How To Geek doing a post on it as well.

Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out, not a bad idea. I know I use it all the time, so this small utility has served me incredibly well, and other might benefit also, but you're right, they have to know it exists first;)

Hi DaddyDave,

I just discovered TaskDaddy and wanted to point you to the QuickOutlookTask utility I wrote a couple of years back. Then I saw in one of your comments that you already found it  :D.

I'm going to check out TaskDaddy and let you know what I think. Always interesting to see how the same idea gets implemented by a completely different person ;)

Keep up the   good work!

Honestly, I would try your best to pickup XHTML and CSS first.

I second this, and want to add that I think www.w3schools.com might be a good place to start.

What does the Scroll Lock key do, anyway?

I mean besides toggle the LED on my keyboard.

Silly question! It scrolls the lock, of course ;)

Great to hear, Thomas!

I found the problem, I guess I am still not using RTM version of the office. I will try to upgrade and see if it works.

Thanks,

Thanks, keep us posted?

Thanks a lot, I have been looking for this for some time now. However, then I try it I am getting following error:

The type initializer for 'JrOnomNamespace.OnenoteHierarchy' threw an exception.

-Saurabh

Oops - this obviously should not happen ;)  It almost sounds as if OneNote is not installed. Can you give some more details please? Operating system, OneNote version, where are your notebooks (local, shared network drive, sharepoint, skydrive), stuff like that? I promise you we'll get to the bottom of this!

Another version of the OneNote 2010 Sort Utility.
I took out some bugs, mainly.

I installed this and the message 'Net Framework 4 reqd'  for it to work.

Yes, it needs .NET Framework 4. You can download it here: http://www.microsoft...2&displaylang=en.

I'll edit the post to include this information.

Pause/Break. The only drawback for me is that on some laptops it needs a prefix key.

Announce Your Software/Service/Product / Sort OneNote 2010 Sections
« on: August 03, 2010, 01:54 PM »
As a heavy user of OneNote, I am generally happy with the 2010 version. One of the drawbacks is that most add-ins, written for the 2007 version, no longer work for notebooks in the 2010 format, or are unreliable. I am beginning to get familiar with programming for OneNote 2010 and trying my hand at some utilities myself.

The OneNote utility I am sharing here is "OneNote 2010 Sort Utility". I found that the existing one by Daniel Escapa does not work for my 2010-formatted notebooks.
This utility sorts sections within notebooks and section groups and and (sub)pages within sections. The sorting can be done by name or lastModifiedTime, ascending or descending, and can be done recursively (for sections in section groups in the currently selected notebook or section group, etc) or not. The sorting routines respect subpage structure. For some reason, the section groups themselves apparently cannot be sorted.

I have only been able to do limited testing, but the utility appears to work well, also for notebooks stored on SkyDrive, as mine are.
I hope some gallant souls are willing to try this out and give me some feedback.

The zip-file contains a setup file. Just install and run and you get a treeview of your notebooks. Browse to the notebook, section group, section or page whose sections or (sub)pages you want to sort and press the button.

Requirements: .NET Framework 4, OneNote 2010.

Cheers,
Jan Roelof

ooh nice! will we get a farr alias for this too? please :-*

Very nice to use as an alias in FARR.

ah i  see you are way ahead of me!

Thanks Mouser!

I plan to offer this as a FARR alias as well, but I have to re-discover how this works again, with dcupdater and stuff.
Did you get my request for a reminder of my dcmember credentials?

@jpijper: Sorry, I don't quite follow this. In any application, I use Windows+n to bring up an untitled OneNote page. So what would be the advantage of "QuickNote"?

Hi IainB,

Thanks for your interest! For me there are two main advantages:

1. I want to be able to jot down the quick note with a minimum of distraction from the task I am working on. I found even doing it through the side window with Win+N too distracting. With QuickNote, I just type the note, hit Enter and am right back where I was. I never get to see the OneNote interface and there is no window to close.

2. With QuickNote, I can set the default target section for the quick notes. The side note is always a page in Unfiled notes, and I want my quick notes to go to my GTD / Inbox section.

These seem like small things, but they make quick note taking a snappier experience for me.

QuickNote

Overview

QuickNote is a small utility I have written that makes it possible to quickly create Microsoft OneNote notes, without using Microsoft OneNote itself. For instance, say that you are working in Microsoft Word and you suddenly remember that you still need to plan a meeting with Peter. To turn this into an OneNote note, normally you would switch to OneNote, go to the proper notebook and section, create a new page, type the note, and switch back to Word. Using QuickNote, you simply hit the Win-R hotkey and type "note Plan meeting with Peter". You never even leave Word.

Background

I use OneNote in my implementation of David Allen's "Getting Things Done". I have a section called "Inbox" in a notebook "GTD" where I capture all kinds of stuff for later processing. This utility makes it easy to quickly capture any random thoughts, inspirations and ideas to my GTD Inbox.

Installation and Prerequisites

  • The archive contains just the executable itself: note.exe, a config file and a readme file. Extract the executable and config file to a folder in your path, for instance the Windows folder.
  • This utility was written for OneNote 2010. Both OneNote 2010 and the .NET Framework 4 must be installed.

Basic usage

To use the utility, hit Win-R to get a command prompt, and then type something like: "note This is a note" (without the quotes). This creates a new OneNote page in the "Unfiled notes" section, with the title "This is a note".

Switches

The following switches are available:

/d or /disp or /display   Display the note  in OneNote after creating it
/s or /sect or /section   Specify the section where this note should be put
/set or /setting or /settings   Display the settings window
/h or /help or /?   Display some help

Settings

The following settings can be changed through the Settings dialogue (note /set):

  • Beeps: whether or not the system should beep to confirm note creation.
  • Confirmation dialogs: whether or not note creation is confirmed with a message box.
  • Target Section: the section where notes will be created by default.

Examples

note Plan meeting with Peter
note Plan meeting with Peter /disp
note Plan meeting with Peter /section todo
note /set

Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR alias: Quick Outlook Task
« on: September 14, 2009, 08:50 AM »
I use it too, everyday since I first installed it! Very convenient, especially with my AutoHotkey auto-complete strings providing a nice template that I just need to fill. Outlook tasks are then synced with toodledo (todo web service) with a handy little syncing app (Toodledo Outlook Sync). Not perfect... but almost !

Vinayak : I just dismiss all the message boxes at once when I'm finished entering all needed tasks. I got used to it... (I actually find it useful to see confirmations that all went well...)

Very nice, Armando ;)
You know that most confirmations can in fact be turned off? Use "do /settings" and uncheck "Confirmation Dialogs".

This is a cool utility!
Is there a way of turning off the "Do you want to update.." confirmation message?

- Vinayak.

Thank you Vinayak! It is nice to see that even more than a year after the last post some people are still discovering this utility. I myself still use it all the time as well.
As to your question, I don't think that that message box can be turned off, sorry. I hope this doesn't turn you off.

Developer's Corner / Re: Best way to sync programming projects?
« on: August 31, 2008, 03:13 AM »
Have you tried SyncToy from MS? It is great to sync (with many options: sync one way, both ways, contribute, etc) between multiple computers. You can save sync configuration and selectively execute one or all. It is fast and free...

http://www.microsoft...7&displaylang=en

I second the SyncToy suggestion. Works great and is very easy. And totally free ..

Just came back from a 2 weeks break and slowly going through all my "new" emails... 320.  :'(
On the bright side, running DcUpdater, I noticed several fun software updates.
But with QuickOutlookTask (in DcUpdater) the updating process seems to "freeze" at the end of the download, giving me and endless "retrieving update"... . Anybody else having this problem?
(I did slightly modify the QuickOutlookTask.alias file in the QuickOutlookTask folder... could this be the culprit?)

Welcome back Armando. Speaking for myself, I don't recognize this, and have not heard others complain about this. If you just download and extract the zip file by hand, do you still have problems?

You could also try Redemption http://www.dimastr.com/redemption/ which is something i used a while back and seemed to worked well.

i used redemption at my last job/computer and it worked fine for me.

Thanks for pointing me to Redemption, sstrebo and newave. I will certainly explore this! Stay tuned :)
