Living Room / Re: Microsoft Releases SyncToy 1.4
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:40 AM »
Yep, the update is nice, and long overdue. I grabbed it right after it was released; it's always been a favorite for the same reasons 'cranioscopical' stated. Two of the XP PowerToys take you to MS validation d/l pages  The whole collection can be found at MajorGeeks as one .zip.

Living Room / Re: Buying New PC. Suggestions?
« on: October 11, 2006, 09:03 PM »
Hmmm...

Lots of good ideas. I've built and re-built 9 machines in the last five years. They're all in service, working fine. Five are shared more or less by Bite-sized trouble and I, and the others are virtually networked to my primary box.

I've used Newegg and Mwave, (even Tiger Direct once or twice), so the links from tinyvillager are nice to see. I agree that Dell is flexible in configuring to a customer's wishes, but their reliability is suspect, IMHO. Worse is HP; their machines are so proprietary as to be nearly impossible to alter. (They rivet drives in place!)

Unless you need to live on the bleeding edge of tech, I've found that it's easier to build solid, robust boxes using components that have been out long enough to get thorughly discussed in their respective forums. I also wait for the inevitable price drop!

Frankly, I've learned everything by trying. We was all newbies once, after all...
After I overcame the terror the first time I cracked open a case, it was Wahoo! from there.

lol!
Thank you Mouser and everyone for a terrific thread!

a) I used to make egg creams with seltzer and a real seltzer bottle I found at a garage sale.

2) y'know, there's No egg and No cream in an egg cream?

Bite-sized trouble doesn't like to watch me clean my ears. She says I shouldn't have that look on my face unless she's involved!

I have that ladder!!

I've never had any luck rewinding a DVD; spinning it on a pencil never works. (only for VideoCD's--you can rewind those any way you like.)

This guy's really got a handle on the process...
This kind of photography was done by Prof. Edgerton of MIT for years and years. (He developed the strobe flash)
Waugh may be standing on the shoulders of giants, but he's definitely adding to the view!

I've contributed to WikiHow a few times. (It's one of the items on my personal Google desktop) Sometimes I've had trouble with the format rendering the way I write.
:(

Over all, it's not bad. The search can yield some quirky results, but that should smooth out with more pages.
Give it a look, if you haven't. OEF

Yup, only for U.S. peeps.  ;)
I wish I knew how I could check the checkbox "    I agree to the Contest Rules." in a way that tom does not give me an error message: " Must check to agree to Contest Rules "

I mean the checkbox is ticked, what more can I do? I bet one needs to live in North America...

Ha! I wish Bite-sized trouble was a secret shopper. She's always leaving her credit card statements for me to find, 'cuz she knows I'll pay 'em!

I've done some "comparision shopping" for my company, but it's really all about scoping the competition. We send underage test shoppers to our own retail stores to see if our employees make sales without proper ID. It's very rarely a problem; we've got good people.

Wow!
Bite-sized trouble and I were out of town (camping; no computers, just a GPS!) in Northern California for a couple of weeks. Thanks!!!

Zoom Player Pro rocks!   :D

Living Room / Re: how tall is Cody?
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:20 PM »
!!!
It's perfectly clear Cody has no fixed size; big as Godzilla and as small as an ironic thank you.
This has been an expensive thread. Bite-sized Trouble went to Blick's art store and came back with over $100 worth of products. She got Sculpey, too.
We spent an entire afternoon making stuff and getting covered with colors!

BTW, we think the coin should chocolate.

If you lined up all the cars in the world end to end, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them, five or six at a time, on a hill, in the fog.

I've tried Star Office, Open Office, and a few others, but I stay with MS. Starting with Works, I've been through Office 97, Office 2000 Professional, Office XP Professional, and Office 2003. I just got the beta for Office 2007, but I've been a little busy to really get into it. Along with Publisher, IMHO MS Office is the best code MS ever wrote. Yeah, the suite's getting pretty fat, but at least every version has been an improvement, unlike the OS. (Vista looks like the WinME of the 2000's; they gutted the original code down to fluff.)

Living Room / Re: Unprotected Wireless Lans?
« on: June 25, 2006, 03:37 PM »
I have several machines/peripherals tied together in a partly wired and mostly wireless setup. Except for a couple of times, Bite-sized trouble and I live just far enough away from other houses in a residential area that we've never run into the issue. Our stuff's very secure, so it's not a problem for us.
I've never gone looking for any wlans with the laptop; just not my style.

Hi Skrommel!
Tried this on a sandbox; seems to work ok. CPU usage about 30% on a P3 733. I don't think that's much of a problem, 'cuz the box isn't doing anything any way, right?
It's nice work, you get a  for it. I don't use screensavers that much, so I probably won't install on my other machines right away.

The newsletter just gets better and better. I pass along some of the links to a small circle of friends (separately, of course!) whom I know will appreciate the effort.
