General Software Discussion / Re: Strange Windows wallpaper trick
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:10 AM »
no, even turning on "adjust for best appearance" didnt fix it :(
There's an article on the Windows Shell blog about MS having to fix scaling for Vista, so there may have been a Windows Update patch that fixed something there for XP as well.

Something's not quite right here...
For machines where it's not working as a gradient, try IrfanView (.com). Once you load the pixels into it, you can either do ctrl-shift-S (for Stretch) to show it as wallpaper, or go fullscreen and tap the "3" key just to view it. (Ctrl-R will let you Resize it to save it permanently -- the recommended setting is "resampled" with Lanczos filter.)

ps.all this talk makes me realize that this might actually make for a good firefox extension task..
That's a great idea -- I wonder if there's a way to get at IE's scrolling by hosting the IE control? IE has the smooth scrolling built-in, and when you middle-click a textfile in IE and move the mouse up/down you can get it to scroll by pixel instead of by line. Maybe that'd be a way to avoid reinventing the steel-belted radial?  8)

This app would also be good on big screens as a karaoke display if there were a way to use it fullscreen (like IE/Firefox with the F11 key).

ps.
I've been moving apartments for the last two weeks so i've been a little scarce on the forum, but i'm back now, and glad to be back  8)
What, you didn't like where the apartments were located before? Where did you move them to?

Love the newsletter, as always. [tipping hat]

(Unless you are on an airplane with your laptop and freaking out about the wasting batteries during the 10 minutes bootup).
Heh! MS did put some effort into optimizing the startup process for XP -- maybe they've tweaked it some more in Vista. Still, for battery considerations, maybe it's better to do the initial boot/login on A/C power and then use hibernate mode until you're ready to use it. The tradeoff for the potential battery savings would be a little less security protecting the logged-in account. 8)

Thanks, actually modifying in HKCU is indeed a better choice, no drawbacks as I see it.  (updated ver 1.0.52 reads/writes only in HKCU->Run)
Good deal!  :D

On the flip side, the StartUp folder lets you temporarily bypass running those items at login (shift key) and you can drag & drop items in and out to change their behavior.
True. However I think users can still easily enable/disable the auto-run behavior in Moby just as what they can do with it in Startup folder
Yup -- except for the part about "temporarily bypass running those items at login (shift key)". Still, if it's easier to program the reg check, that's a reasonable consideration too.

The shortcut properties sheet also lets you specify whether to start minimized, maximized, or "normal". What would the benefit be of a registry-based start? ;)
Would anyone want Moby to auto-start in any other way than "minimized"?  :D :D
I doubt it. Just detailing all the benefits of the startup location. :P

P.S. you know I always let moby stay in my system tray, this 1.0.52 ver prevents it from auto-hiding from me even if I ignores it.  8)  (am I being unreasonable? :P)
You mean it overrides the "hide when inactive" thing in the XP tray somehow? Definitely not unreasonable -- I think that function is pretty unreliable anyway. I've got a number of programs that don't stay visible even when I set 'em to "always show". Very annoying! Here's hoping they made sure it works reliably in Vista...

82
I have added the option to "auto-run and minimize-to-tray when windows starts". When you enable this option, the program adds a key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
That's a neat idea, but why not just use the StartUp folder for more user control? The reg "run" key is more for security software or stuff that might have negative side effects when it's not running. (It also starts a little earlier in the login process.)

On the flip side, the StartUp folder lets you temporarily bypass running those items at login (shift key) and you can drag & drop items in and out to change their behavior. The shortcut properties sheet also lets you specify whether to start minimized, maximized, or "normal". What would the benefit be of a registry-based start? ;)

BTW, HKCU is usually better than HKLM unless you need one local account to make the loading decision for all accounts. Again, it takes away a layer of control for the individual.

83
On-screen character recognition has always been one of the features i want to add to moby, however it seems v tricky to me and I'm not sure how to code it.
One idea might be to just send a doubleclick to the active window at the current pointer location. That'd select the word in most programs -- then all you have to do is copy it to the clipboard. OCR might be overkill for that particular functionality. :)  Actually, the user could doubleclick the word desired (so that clicks aren't accidentally sent to the wrong place) and Moby could do the rest, but a <hotkey>-click might be pretty neat.

:) Try DelEmpty v1.2. It's got a few of your suggestions incoporated.
Awesome, Skrommel -- thank you sir! And, good to see you back around the board.  (BTW, the quoted link is "1hoursoftwrawe.com", but I figured it out...)  :P

Code: AutoIt [Select]
  1. (although of course the gal that plays Buffy is drop-dead goreous)
I have it on good authority, umm from James himself, that's she pretty much a witch to work with.
Wow, sorry to hear that. (Hmm, maybe my "goreous" typo was more accurate, as in, gored by a bull.  ;D )  Then again, maybe they didn't hit it off, but that doesn't guarantee that Gellar's like that with everybody. ;)  Still, it could be the curse of a beautiful face -- so many times, "the beautiful people" (really attractive men & women) tend to be rather self-centered if they're used to people fawning on them. Kind of a vicious circle -- they come to expect it.

85
Sorry about my typos.
Ehh, no harm done.  8)

It helped out a lot, thanks again.
Kewl! Glad it did the trick.

However I am appalled that you don't know who James Marsters is!
Heh! Thanks for the background info -- sounds like the guy must be talented to be working so much. Guess I never really got into Buffy or Angel (although of course the gal that plays Buffy is drop-dead goreous).  :D  The P.S. I Love You movie sounds worth seeing -- I'll have to check it out when it opens.

Did I mention I have been happily married for 14.5 yrs and this was my birthday present?
Sounds like a memorable one. :P  Way to go, too, on the marriage -- it's always nice to see people that make it work instead of cutting and running after a couple of years. :)  Nice to meetcha!

Finished Programs / Re: DelEmpty File Question...
« on: January 11, 2007, 09:19 PM »
The only problem I have with it is I can get to to go into my program files or hace and an icon on mydesk top.
Hi, Jennie -- welcome to the board! I tried to figure out what in the world you were asking. (Reread your note -- the message uses words that don't even exist. Heh! The message "preview" and "spell check" buttons work wonders. ;) ) I think you're asking about "installing" the program so it shows up on your Start Menu (and maybe the desktop). Let me know if I misunderstood.

If I'm reading it right, the easiest way is to move the program to "c:\program files". After that, right-click it, and move down to the "Send to" submenu at the bottom. Pick "Desktop (create shortcut)". Then, if you want it on your Start Menu, you can just drag it to the Start button, which will show the menu. (Don't let go of it yet.) Then drag it to "All Programs", and drop it on the programs menu that pops up. Finally, you can delete it from the desktop if you don't want it in both places.

Hope that helps! By the way -- who the heck is James "Spike" Marstons?  :)

87
Hi, Skrommel -- been getting lotsa use out of DelEmpty. Thanks -- it's very handy!

A few suggestions for 1.2:
  • add something so that one could see if the program is still scanning the folder. Of course this is only a problem when you scan BIG folders, then then it really IS a problem.
  • maybe add a "stop" button to stop it from scanning?
  • IMHO, the tool should not set the checkmark for folders that contain 0 files, 0 folders BUT 1 .exe!
  • when you mark several folders with Shift-CursorUp/CursorDown and hit Space then, only the last marked folder will get/lose its checkmark, not all the marked ones.

The one about auto-checking folders with EXEs is very pertinent -- in one case today it checkmarked a folder with 9 executables and a subdir. Do you know of a quick tweak I might be able to add? :)

Finished Programs / Re: Advanced GUI for UPX

I don't know what to do with the source code.
Good point. If you go to www.autohotkey.com you can download the program that lets you run the .AHK files, and it can also convert them to executables.

Looks very nice! 8)

Cavalcader, check out the new alpha (1.0.44) - Safe Search!  ;)
Nice! I'll check it out. :D

The next feature to add to moby will be "auto-detection of inflections and spelling variants"  :)
Aha -- fuzzy logic. Sounds good!

92
Okay, I had to try it again since it's been awhile.  :D

If that takes your lamp, is the attaching screw that rearranged?

The phrase started its life as
a more normal question
How many lawyers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

...and was boomeranged through German, French & Japanese (2 loops). It then became totally insane after a single loop through all the languages:
ZOWIE
Sheep Borgi bulbs to a large number of lawyers? ;D

Mouser, I don't see "reset after each" in the help file -- what's it do?

93
Cavalcader: Words in blue are headwords in the existing Moby database, on which you can click to see more synonyms, while red words are just synonyms.  ;)  Sorry I didn't make this clear.
No problem -- I see it now after browsing the pages a bit.  :)

I'd like to allow users to freely & easily edit this profane words list after installation based on the default one.
If it's been edited by the user, it won't get replaced next time he upgrades, unless he "restores default".  :)
That's a great idea -- the profanity category definitely varies from person to person, and culturally as well.

94
Definitely, quite a list!

lesbian..
penis..
prostitute..
are these "profane" words?
Took me a minute to figure it out -- but the color code tells the story. Blue words listed have candidates for the filter but are not themselves in question.

95
That's a good question! Here's probably a good place to start:
http://en.wikipedia....&fulltext=Search

Thanks for looking into it.

96
Hey, Anderson, with debugging and stuff, you never did comment on my note awhile back:
What would you think about a "safe search" option
...etc.

Is there any chance you'd consider an optional vulgar/profane language filter?

1 this is a quality alpha, not a bug-ridden one. ;D
Heh! Love it.  :D

i probably should not make those red - i did so to draw attention to them since they are new and very important
How about bold instead? Of course, that makes the text bulkier, so it might have to be reformatted a bit.

98
Process Explorer is a super powerful & handy program, no wonder Microsoft bought Sysinternals
Yeah, those're a couple of creative guys. They've done a lot for the Windows community, and not just in all the free tools they've posted. Hopefully they'll be able to make a difference at MS too...

99
Tried Outpost firewall 4.0.969.7020 (584) and if the system's loaded down it doesn't let Moby through, so I get either
[attachimg=#1][/attachimg]

or

[attachimg=#2][/attachimg]

Then it got through, and I saw

[attachimg=#3][/attachimg]

No problems from Moby. :) (Dunno about the difference between the two initial dialogs, though.)

I'm a bit excited about this new "Suggest Roots" tab in v1.0.35.  8)
Very nice! You don't let any grass grow under your feet!

What would you think about a "safe search" option, especially for people that might be using Moby in an office or customer-support setting? It could complicate things if language like bull* (or worse) popped up at the wrong time. :D
