OK... thanks for the clarification of NO and NEVER. I didn't notice the choice for never when I voted - can I change my vote?!

If I knew how, I would change the vote.  But you could also think of it this way.  In the end, when the statistics are compiled, a vote for 'Never' is like a 'No +' , whereas a 'Sometimes' is like a 'Yes - '.   Will that suffice?

Tekzel: when compressing files of roughly 4.7GB of size (*cough*), speed is certainly an issue. Also, WinRAR can practically be used as a backup tool because of all it's commandline options, as well as unicode filename support, NTFS security & alternate streams support, etc...

Now, if 7zip was actually cleanly written and was extended to have the same support as winrar...

F0dder, I *cough* don't sit there and stare at my screen when compressing a large amount of data.  I let it go and do something else!  Either way I don't believe the difference is enough to make it worth worrying about, and I KNOW it isn't enough for ME to worry about. :)

Hi all,

IMO, in the near future, when dual cores will get everywhere and quad cores will be common, and the standard RAM will be 512MB, (coders/designers: 2GB), isn't there some obvious way that the *slow* .7z compression will get fixed?

Of course we'll also stack up HD-DVD's / BluRay's so that .zip is fine as well.

So, then what happens?

opinions, predictions?

512meg ram is already standard for normal machines, anything used for gaming or developing tends to come with a gig or more. If you buy a machine today with only 256 megs, you're being ripped off.

Also, even the dirt-cheap Pentium D processors are dualcore... amd64x2 CPUs are also pretty cheap now... too bad that some people write crap code that doesn't work properly on dualcore machines without various tricks - like, all unreal engine based games, ufo afterlight, ...

I can't believe that no one has voted for Blue  :-\

What is it? Has everyone got so caught up with the question that they can't see past the petty seriousnesses into the unbounded freedom of spontaneous colour??

I think we needed more colour:
Do you use 7-zip?

I know Spike Milligan would have answered Green:)

Sorry, just obscure silliness: no offence intended  :)

Do you know the Pink Panther? One of my favourite parts was when he entered the Hotel and finding a dog next to the owner asks "Does your dog bite?"

The owner answers "No", but when he bends to pat the dog, the dog of course bites him.

When asked the Hotel owner says, "That's not my dog"

Hey Perry, what do you say we start a humor thread or pester mouser to start a jokes section. We are pretty good at restricting it to respectable, acceptable humor, IMO.

And yes, I wanted a mixed color option, blue happens to be my favorite color but it's democratic world, give everyone a chance!
Even not-so-well-known PowderBlue , OldLace , LightGoldenRodYellow, Chartreuse and BlanchedAlmond ;) ;)

- can it have to do with mouser being an American,
and as such are to use colors but not colours?

Maybe I will just leave that humor thing for others to handle...  :-[

Good point... and one that constantly amazes me: that even non-alphabetic language people still code their programmes and web pages in American English.

No, it was a good and an amusing point  :)

I use .zip when I am going to be distributing files to other people and I am unsure if they will have a copy of winrar.

The reason for this is that Windows ME, XP, and Vista can handle .zip files without having to go fetch a program to open it. (I don't know if 2k can)

I don't want people looking at a file and scratching their heads wondering what to do with it or making a face and deciding it's not worth it because they have to go hunt down yet another tool, just to open one of my files.

I am better off using .zip because it's familiar and people know what to do with it and usually already have what they need to open it.

Even people on other OS's generally have what they need to open .zip.

I would have voted for the color, but it was blue and reminded me too much of my bad Win98SE days. Why couldn't it have been purple?

I still can't believe 7-Zip does not have a keyboard shortcut for "Extract." I've been writing and asking for that since version 2 and am flummoxed as to why [not].
