Problem with Windows XP MCE Sound

For some reason, I had an issue today with my pc's sound. The sound was working when I came home for lunch, but after returning home from work for the evening, my sound didnt work right. The sound plays on startup of windows (The windows xp startup sound) but after that all sound ceases. So, I tried reinstalling drivers. That didnt work. So, I tried reinstalling windows, same thing.

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this? I think I had this once before, but I cant for the life of me figure out how I fixed it. If anyone has ideas for what I can try, I am desparate. Please help

go to C:\WINDOWS\Media
and play the wav files in WMP, is it ok?

Thats just it, nothing else plays in any player :-/

only the windows startup sound plays fine?

it should not be a hardware prob coz the startup sound is fine.

go to ctrl panel>sound and audio>check the volume and mute option, go to audio tab and check the default device.

Nothing has sound :-/ No players, no web stuff, not even windows event sounds.

So, I tried reinstalling windows, same thing.

After reinstalling windows you still have no sound?
That's very serious!

Just thinking out loud: if it works on windows start up, it might be related to one of the apps that start with windows. After it's started, it disables sound or something.
Definitelly a weird issue.

Heads up to all. I managed to fix this issue. I powered off the PC and reseated the card. This shouldnt have made a difference being that the sound worked on windows startup, but I guess it did.

So, problem solved. My thanks to those who replied!
