Welcome and thanks for using the announce forum, from screenshot Polywick is something I (and I suspect others here) would be interested in trying. How about a link? :)

Oh look! Those columns on the yellow note-sheet in the image...
That looks very interesting to me ... like a PIM; like Lotus Agenda.
The only seemingly relevant reference on the 'net that I could find to it was a Twitter presence: https://twitter.com/polywick
 - but that wasn't about a "story" server (which seems to be a story-writing/development tool - e.g., as included in Scrivener).

Why would they set up an account just to prematurely announce it on DC Forum?

Maybe to generate hype?  That twitter account also leads to the following homepage: http://www.polywickstudio.com/

It looks almost identical to Ecco Pro 8)!
An indispensable program which I am using daily together with Ecco Extension.

How will Polywick Story Server differ from Ecco Pro w. Extension?
Do you have a beta version which we may take for a spin?

@ viking, I notice that they're from the Philippines... could they have obtained the code Sally worked on back then ? Wasn't she also from that country ?

Hi Pierre,
Sally is actually from Singapore. I doubt that this is her creation. Her alpha looked quite different. It is more likely Slang. There are some images on the Ecco forum that have evolved very quickly.

Here's a feature that was often requested - Console View.

Now you can view error messages when the rules or lua script give errors.

Has Ecco's memory limitations and risks for file corruption been taken care of by going to 64-bit?

For the file-corruption risk, this uses spanned saves and write-detect to prevent this.

For the memory limitation, each record has a 64-bit integer primary key.

LOL... when is the last time you tried InfoQube ? It has evolved so much...
and can be made to look so similar to Ecco:

It may seem daunting, but getting good use out of Ecco would seem to necessitate that you have an Ecco mechanic on hand to follow you around everywhere, to support Ecco's kludgy idiosyncrasies.

Nan nah nah, you guys have this all wrong... Both Ecco and InfoQube are dead simple.
The database contains items and each item can have any number of user-defined values. Other than values, items have parents and children. That's it !
Grid / notepads / calendar and other UIs show a sub-set of all items in the database, based on their values.
The rest is icing on the cake, to ease viewing / filtering / sorting these items.

(Similarities between IQ and this tread: of all posts ever written on DC, this thread shows a list of posts that share something... in this case, they share a parent subject)

I'd love to get a version of InfoQube - maybe a "beginner's version - stripped of all the layers of complexity, all the features that appeal to subsets of the main market, and then start with that. Maybe the time is past for a desktop outliner, what with Workflowy and Dynalist so robust, but something that takes the roots of TkOutline, NoteMap, and one or two other well-done (for their day) single-pane outliners, adds a modern policy, and puts it on the market would get an order from me ASAP.

I am posting mainly to be sure I get notifications.

As to Infoqube, I can testify that Infoqube's latest incarnations are much easier to follow than in the past, so I highly recommend it.

Just be aware that PPL targets a much more elaborate program than simply an outliner, and he includes gantt charts, calendar functions, and many other database-focused features.

For example, in PPL's screen shot, you see how in fact Infoqube can be made to look much like Ecco - but as in his screen shot, Infoqube does not have a close equivalent to Ecco's "tree / folder" view, which is what we see in the left column of the Story Server screenshots.  Over the years I think I've finally realized that I really don't need that tree view, but coming from Ecco that was something that  threw me back for a long time.  Ecco's strength for me is as more of a "single-pane" outliner, and Infoqube does that fine.

I think there's room for both approaches -- PPL's AND an outliner-focused reincarnation of the Ecco paradigm with modern technology

Not sure about the name, however.  "Story Server?"  :-)

But let me close with a big "thank you!" to the Story Server developer, and please keep up the good work!

Maybe Inspiration?  - not tried by me and not much mentioned on DC, but a mature program; been around for ten years at least.  Their claims:
For visual mapping, outlining, writing and making presentations, use Inspiration® 9, the ultimate thinking and learning tool. Brainstorm ideas, structure your thoughts and visually communicate concepts to strengthen understanding with the Diagram and Map Views. To take notes, organize information, and structure writing for plans, papers and reports, use the integrated Outline View to focus on main and supporting ideas and to clarify thinking in written form. With Inspiration's Presentation Manager, transform your diagrams, mind maps and outlines into polished presentations that communicate ideas clearly and demonstrate understanding and knowledge.

Here is an edited version of a comment I posted at outlinersoftware.com, so I can repeat the LAST suggestion primarily:

- PSS I hope you will not let any bad vibes discourage you.

- Yes we Ecco fanatics have been disillusioned in the past.  Yes EccoExt from Slang and Infoqube are the only exceptions from the rule that our hopes will be dashed—BUT

- After all these years I would like nothing more than what you appear to be working on - an updated and working new generation of software on the Ecco Pro model.

- Seems to me a lot of the concern comes from PSS’s phrasing (StoryServer?) (“tough”?).  I presume this comes from someone for whom English is not a first language.  If not, then trouble is ahead for sure—BUT

- I for one want to applaud these efforts and wish you the best.  The Ecco Pro model may not have taken the world by storm 20+ years ago, and it won’t take it by storm now, but from those of us who embraced it over the years then I bet you’ll find plenty of support for beta testing and initial deployment.

- To PSS, I say thank you for letting us know that this is on the drawing board and please keep us informed as you proceed.

- I see you have posted here and at Outlinersoftware.com.  One thing that has been missing from the Ecco world forever (as far as I know) is a dedicated forum where Ecco enthusiasts can communicate with each other and help with progress.  The Yahoo forum has been our lifeline but the software is absolutely awful.  The forum at Eccomagic had potential, but for some reason I never understood was not well used.  Donationcoder is better for the announcement, but we really need a FULL PHPBBS or similar forum (like this one at DonationCoder) but dedicated to your work where people can post problems and solutions and they can be found in the future without reinventing the wheel. Infoqube has that and it is VERY helpful.  PLEASE consider your own dedicated forum software location, and if you do please let us know about it!!!

The developers here, spent ages trying to figure out how the one-pane Organizer’s launch menu system worked.

The One-pane Organizer’s Launch System is totally unique. There’s nothing like it, in the market, or any off-the-shelf library available. It had to be custom-made.

Impressive.
Some design objectives, but apparently not a user requirement in sight?
Hmm. I feel that I may be missing something here.

The design is to make a one-pane organizer.
