Newsletter for July 19th, 2006
Codename ''Best Of Blog"
"If you read nothing else on our site, read the newsletter!"
1. Best of Blog - Major New Feature Added to the SiteWe've just added a big new feature to the website that we are really excited about and proud of, called Best Of Blog. It's designed for the casual reader; a daily blog highlighting the best and most interesting threads on the forum every day. It's the perfect page to bookmark if you can't find the time to read all the new posts on the forum every day, and it's the perfect page to send your friends for an introduction to the DonationCoder.com website. Please help us spread the word about this new page!
2. New Member Mini-Review SectionUsing the same technology as we have used in our Best Of Blog, we've created a new page with nice friendly overviews of the member-written mini-reviews on our forum. We haven't finished adding all the old mini reviews, but drop by and pay it a visit - you might discover some new cool software. We are also using the same technology to make a page for coding snacks which we will make live soon. Members have also written some nice new mini reviews:
3. C++ Builder Programming Contest Entries Now Available to DownloadWe've extended the deadline of our C++ Builder Programming contest until August 14, but in the meantime we've invited the entrants to make their donationware program submissions available to the public, and we've created a special page where you can see screenshots and even download and play with them. You'll find a nice mix of games and utilities, and we will be adding more in the upcoming weeks. Thanks to all of the coders who have entered so far. And don't forget to send them a donation if you want to support their work!
4. DonationCredits and CodyCoinsIt's been a little over three months since we unveiled the DonationCredits micro-donation system at DonationCoder.com, as a way to encourage and make it easier, safer, and more economical for people to make small donations to one another to support each others work. In those three months over three thousand dollars worth of credits have been exchanged between users. But we think we've only scratched the surface of the usefullness of the DonationCredits system and we are going to be redoubling our efforts to make them a more useful way to support people who are doing good stuff in the donationware scene. This week we've made it easier to add a CodyCoin image and link to your own web pages that will let people know you are asking for donations and will bring them to your donaion page on DonationCoder.com where they can make a donation to you. Soon we will be making a page listing all member websites or donationware programs that include CodyCoin links.
5. Audio Radio Show Podcast Producer WantedThis past week we released the third DonationCoder.com audio radio show podcast, our mix of humour and computer/software chat. And now the time has come to pass the torch of producing the podcast show to someone with better broadcasting skills. Like everything on our site, it's an unpaid volunteer position for someone who would be doing it for the love of doing it, but we will try to encourage member donations to the producer as always.
6. New Software UpdatesThe most recent versions of Screenshot Captor and URL Snooper have finally come out of beta. Screenshot Captor v2.18.03 now includes a huge and completely up to date Help file filled with tips and tricks you probably didn't know about before, as well as some very handy new features like quick deletion of images and quick path copy to clipboard. URL Snooper v2.13.04 now has some great new features designed to make life easier, including automatic network adapter detection and a new optional simple mode which can making everyday url snooping a care free pleasure. We've also improved the URL detection to identify more streaming media urls, and added more troubleshooting pages in the help file.
7. New Coding Snack ReleasesAs always, the coding snack requests for little utilities continues to be a popular section on our forum, and a new autohotkey coder (db) has been posting some fun solutions. Skrommel as usual gives us some great new stuff as well.
- Sync Network Folder Contents as Shortcuts - gsull asked for a way to have links for all the contents of a remote directory. dB came to the recue and made Shortcut Maker. then, skrommel gave some help too and made ShortcutSync.
- "Open" icon - Drag and drop icon2 onto it and icon2's Open action. DanD said "My attempts to double-click on an icon don't always work" and he got some interesting solutions, including dB's fun Bump-n-Run.exe
- Systray keyboard lights - Prosayist asked for an utility to present the current state of the keyboard toggle keys at the tray. jgpaiva made KeyInfo, and prosayist made a few iconsets for it too!
- DoOrDel - A small deadly utility by Skrommel that will delete files on boot up if the wrong password is entered.
