NANY 2015 Release: WhenLast (Android app)
« on: November 22, 2014, 12:40 AM »
I decided to combine my recent experiments with alternative programming languages/platforms with NANY this year, and release an Android app for NANY 2015.

My first Android App is tentatively called "When Last".

DOWNLOAD: https://www.donation...whenlast-release.apk

It's a simple app that helps you keep track of the last time(s) you performed some activity (like changed the batteries on your smoke detector).
This is actually an idea that I think was discussed on the forum in the context of a desktop app several years ago -- and it may have actually been coded as one at that time?

I haven't looked at those apps, but a quick suggestion just occurred to me if it's not already in there - a reverse or "detriment bar" you try to keep down.

Now excuse me while I eat my 5 slices of pizza ... er ... I mean baked ham and cucumbers!
: )

Ok so my first Android app is just about ready for alpha testing.
Do I have any volunteers who know how to install an android app from a .apk file who are willing to test?

The APK installed and ran fine on my Moto X (2014) and my Nexus 7 (2013) both running KitKat 4.4.4.  I didn't totally try to stress test it but the small run-through I gave it seemed to perform fine.

After adding a single test-entry and pressing the Now button, I 'closed' WL using the Back button (Samsung Tab2 10.1, Android 4.4.2), and went for supper. After returning a bit later it had forgotten the time I pressed the Now button, though I'm very sure it was there when I closed it.
I have been unable to reproduce this behavior  but I'll keep an eye on it.
I did add another entry, and it kept the Now setting, when I last checked, even after a forced close of the app.

This is looking just like any professional Android app, kudo's

New version of the APK is uploaded with tons of bug fixes, support for drag+drop, big improvements to GUI refreshing behavior.

I'm going to start using the google play store alpha testing feature, so anyone who wants to test just message me with your email address and ill add you to the list of alpa/beta tests and youll be able to access and update the program through the normal google play store (or keep downloading and sideloading the apk manually, either way).

Seems to work fine in my tests.

The grey colors are kind of boring and ugly in Lollipop's Material Design theme.

yeah i should maybe use the dark theme.
i also dont like how the buttons are different sizes and all that whitespace on the edit button.
also it looks like its not doing a good job of highlighting the current section ("Home") in lolipop.

Yeah, I added another section ("Work") and I can't tell which one is the current section. There is no indication on the screen. Except, I suppose, that "Home" has 2 entries and "Work" has 1 entry.

I'll be a tester as well, if you should need.

Misc should say (1) too, shouldn't it?

It looks like the count makes the tab-title too long. Turning off All in the settings, or shortening the word to Misc should show it.

Feature-request:

As Ath says -- its cutting off the tab title.
Actually once you have enough tabs it will stop doing that and give each tab as much space as it needs and let the tabs scroll.  But when you have a small number of tabs that will all fit on the screen it will sometimes cut off the tab title as you see.

New version is up with better drag+drop.

Do you folks think its important to start the new user off with some pre-made initial entries? Or leave it blank on first start?

Yes, but preferably make it an option at installation.

That is not an option when installing on Android.......

Could be an option in the wrench-menu: "Add demo-data", and maybe also an option to remove those items (only them added using this option, or delete all items? )

Running this on my HTC One.

Only issue I see so far is one of my categories does not have a count for how many things are there.

So I see

"All (7) |  Aquarium  |  Home (2)"

Aquarium has 5 tasks

I was actually looking for something to help me keep track of regular maintenance on my son's aquarium, and this is perfect.

EDIT - Nevermind, I see that was addressed already with the titles being cut off.

EDIT Again - I've added enough tabs to allow them to scroll on the screen, and Aquarium is still cutting off the number of tasks.
