Sorting - latest copy on top
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:32 AM »
It strikes me that each time when I bring up the main window, CHS sorting is so that it starts on the oldest 'entry' , i.e. the olderst data copied.

It is not really a big deal.

I just have to shift the slider

CHS Slider-10112014 082910.png

to the top.

I vainly tried to find an option to have the slider started at the top, i.e. to have the last clipboard copy displayed, instead of the oldest.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Does this help?  Note the direction of the arrow in "Created".

Forgot to add; you may need to choose which columns you see by clicking on the very small icon below:

The clips are sorted on modified date by default with me, as said, when re-opening CHS I starts off at the bottom, i.e. the oldest clip, even though it is sorted on Modified date. When launched CHS should start at the top, newest clip, at least, that's what I think..

dcwul,

I actually messed with some code recently in CHS to be better about not scrolling to the end of the clips unless it was appropriate..
That is, in past versions it was always scrolling to bottom when a new clip was added, etc., but not CHS will try to avoid doing that if it thinks you are somewhere other than at the bottom of the clip list when a new clip comes in.

But it sounds like you are describing a slightly different scenario.  Can you try to explain what's happening and what you think should happen?
Is it that you have your columns sorted to show new clips at the top (not the CHS default which puts new clips at the bottom), and that your problem is that when CHS *STARTS FOR THE FIRST TIME* the clip list is scrolled to the bottom?
Or are you saying that this clip sorting is always a problem every time you show the CHS window?
Or are you saying that CHS is not remembering which column you had sorted?
etc, etc. I need to understand the nature of the problem.

When I launch CHS the slider is at the bottom, the oldest clip, whereas I think it should be at the top.

Like this

So the *only* problem is when CHS is first launched, and this issue does not present it self when the window is closed, reopened, or when you browse around and add new clips?  It's purely an issue of the initial position in the grid when the program is initially launched?

no, with me, it is always the case.
not only at launch, but also when rightclicking taskbar button - show main window

however, also when changing folders within CHS
e.g.
- folder 'new' is selected. slider is at the top.
- then select 'my notes'
- then go back, slider is at the bottom again

I usually get CHS to open up with 3 panes:
  • The left pane is the "Tree" pane, selected "All".
  • The middle pane is the "Grid" pane, with the slider at the bottom, corresponding to the most recent item captured.
  • The right pane is the "Memo" pane and displays the contents of the most recent item captured.

I got this by setting up the view I wanted, then saving it as a Layout called "3-pane". I have several different Layouts saved, giving different views or sort orders - e.g., one Layout is called "3-pane hide", where the "Tree" pane auto-hides.

When one shuts down CHS in a  specific Layout, it starts up in that Layout by default.
It all seems to be user-settable.

Scarily, I'm feeling quite blond right now, trying to attach an image.

Here's how to do it:

► Set up your layout however you want it.
In your case, you would have the "Created" column sorted with the little arrow pointing down.
MAKE SURE this is the case, in every folder you care about!

► Go to Layouts (Top left, part of the menu)

► Go to bottom of the drop down and pick "Save as..."

► A small window will pop up - it allows you to save certain features of your new layout.
Live on the edge like a true madman and check all 3 boxes.

► In the small box, there's a button that says "Save Now As...."
    Click it.
If you didn't terminate the human race by clicking it, then go ahead and name it.
The file manager will close and you'll be back, staring at the little open box.

► Dismiss it like you do your lowly servants, by clicking the "Done" button.

And that, sir, is your solution. :)

Thanks, I did that and it works as you state.  However, there are two issues that maybe you can help me with.  First, when the program is closed, not just minimized, and reopened I have to go into Layouts and select this one I created.  Is there a way to make this new layout the default so when the program is reopened it will have this layout active?  Second, I have another folder that I need to sort by the Notes field, is there a way to have one folder sorted by one field and another folder sorted by a different field?

Yup and Yuppers!

The first issue gets resolved here:

2014-11-20 ~ 009 [TURNIP].png

The second issue is actually the default modus operandi...
IOW, when you save a layout, each folder is saved just exactly like however that folder it looks, at the moment you save the layout.

So, you can have some columns visible for your collection of cat porn, and your clips of funny knock-knock jokes sorted by how many times you snorted while laughing when you first heard it.

Sort the cat porn according to how many kittens resulted, add the viewed column to your folder of pictures of salted and buttered popcorn, and save the layout.

Then reopen Clipboard Help + Spell.

It's like Christmas, but even better, thanks to kittens and butter!!!

Cheers,

Spammy.
Wistfully wanting a kitten.  <sniff>

Thanks for showing me that setting for the first issue, but that doesn't quite do it.  And it's the same issue as dcwul62 brought up in this post.  I have a layout to sort so latest clip is at the top.  Close CHS completely and reopen.  The grid is scrolled to the bottom and now I have to scroll all the way up to get to the top clip.  What am I missing here?

I must also be missing something here on the second issue.  Whatever field I sort on in one folder applies to all the folders, no matter what layout I use.  I understand that I can create a different layout for each different sorted folder, but that would be more time consuming than just manually sorting whatever folder you're in at the moment. It would be nice to have one layout where say folder A is sorted by date, folder B is sorted by order number, etc.

I think the conclusion is that CHS always sorts to the bottom when you start up, and I have to try to fix that.

wrbird,

For the first question:

Thanks for showing me that setting for the first issue, but that doesn't quite do it.

Can you clarify what is/is not happening?
Just a reminder that Clipboard Help + Spell will open up with whatever layout was being viewed at the moment you closed it.
So if you're like me, maybe you were testing stuff and closed it down when you were in a layout that's not the one you want?

As for the scrolling to the bottom upon first start...

I see what you mean.
I closed down Clipboard Help + Spell completely.
I then restarted it, (minimized to tray) and added a few clips.
I opened the Main Window and although my newest clips were at the top, the scrollbar was near the bottom.

I dragged the scroll bar to the top and scratched my head for moment...

Then I tried this:

I minimized Clipboard Help + Spell.
I added a few more clips and reopened the main window.

The newest clips were at the top, and so was the scrollbar (yay!)

So, I think it's a case of having to drag the scrollbar up to the top when you first start Clipboard Help + Spell... and just that once.

Subsequent maximizing and minimizing of Clipboard Help + Spell's main window will "remember" the scrollbar at the top.

Try it, and see if it "sticks" for you, also...

For the third issue, I see you are correct!  I was wrong about the individual folders being unique.  I often show and hide columns and sort and filter, etc, but I'm really partial to a specific set of columns being displayed and the sort order overall, so I never noticed that all folders were affected by the changes to one folder.  (I can be quite brain dead at times, trust me...   )

Now that my brain hurts from thinking, I've gotta take a nap.

Cheers!

I just tested this. I see what you mean. Though the options say it sets sort order etc. in the layout you select, it always positions the pointer at the logical "bottom" of the captured items in the pane, regardless of whether they were sorted in ascending or descending order.
I never noticed this before as I always want to sort in ascending order with the last captured clip being shown at the bottom of the pane.

If you grab the latest beta, you will find on the Tweaks tab a new option to change the default behavior and make it go to TOP of grid when selecting a new group:
