^I cant comment on most of your post there Steven,
but:
'realtime' CPU usage of MBAM is fairly stable here at <0.01 (i5 / 3.10GHz)

And BitDefender played a painful recurring billing scheme, a fairly common trick where they try to gotcha on the install, which may be part of some super-duper-special, and then a year later can bill you on a credit card that you might not notice.

Thank you for jogging my memory regarding this. I worked for a credit card processor for a couple years (and got an education on credit cards that can't be learned in any school at any price) and we had thousands upon thousands of calls from cardholders who disputed a BitDefender charge on their monthly statement.

Back on-topic, I bought a MBAM license a few years back, not because I wanted/needed the real-time protection, but because I wanted to support them because they have helped me get *metric tons* of crap off of the computers that people have dragged in front of me begging me to fix over the years.

I just bought licenses for 2 computers for the same reason. But we here at DC believe in supporting software developers, right?

It looks like the license change has been made.  If you purchase MBAM from here on out, for $25 you'll get a 1 year subscription to a 3 PC license.

However, if you feel like you really, really want a lifetime license, they've allocated 5000 of them for a last gasp sale.

You can go here until they run out ($25 per PC, lifetime license, no discounts that I'm aware of):

I run Malwarebytes on my Win7.
When I installed it in my WinXP, I think I merely used the same download to save time.
Both work fine.
I wonder now if I'm running the same install on both?

$20 instead of $25
- but of course merely the new 1-year license
Ends at 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday, April 15.

From the release history for 2.0.1:

  • All scheduled scans should now run without popping up the main UI so that users are not interrupted

Still pops up the window after every scheduled scan here :-\.

And they need to fix it so the new version can update itself without having to be run directly from the admin account.

All I can say concretely is that MBAM significantly helped to remove some malware - Conduit Search Protect - that got onto my wife's machine.  Technically, Search Protect is a "potentially unwanted program", but it's malware in my eyes since it actively attempts to prevent being uninstalled.

It's possible that the real-time aspect provided by MBAM Pro wasn't necessary for this - note that Search Protect got on the machine while MBAM Pro was running.

As an aside, a recent evaluation of Webroot SecureAnywhere that I did showed that product was effective in blocking Search Protect from getting on the machine in the first place.  I hope to write up some of my findings of that evaluation sometime soon.

My wife also had this Search Protect, we removed it manually: http://cookieverwijd...ackers/searchprotect

This is a brilliant move, IMHO, because when a licensing change like this happens it doesn't matter how much notice has been given, but there are always people coming out of the woodwork screaming they didn't know & didn't have a chance to buy the product at the old price.

Now, realistically, this is only going to delay the whining, but it was a nice offer.
