NANY - Image Capture and Upload Program
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:24 AM »
UPDATE: imm.io was shutdown. Not sure if I will update to a different service or not.

Application Name Image Capture and Upload Program
Version 1.0.1.12 beta
Short Description Take screen shots and upload to imm.io
Supported OSes Windows XP or higher
Web Page LINK REMOVED
Download Link LINK REMOVED
System RequirementsWindows OS
Author   Chris Gingerich - http://vdsfreak.com

Another NANY submission. I have been using this for a while and decided to release it for NANY 2014. I know there are A LOT of other screen capture apps out there but I wanted one that I can take a quick shot, have it upload right away, and copy the URL to the clipboard. I also wanted to make one myself.  :)

This only uploads to http://imm.io because it is the only one I use. I may add support for other sites in the future.

Visit the web page for more information. Feedback is welcome.

That's fascinating Chris.

A few times when I wanted to show some silly joke graphic, the only way I knew how to "get it in the cloud" was laboriously upload it through TinyFile or some such site.

Do you know how long the site holds the images? Aka is this mainly for quickie uploads to the cloud or is it worth the time to save that link in a more permanent reference file?

The other thing I am trying to figure out is how to get it to play with SC Captor saving the actual image to the clipboard to push into a Sticky. It could be useful to have the image link in that sticky!

But then it becomes a bit of a puzzle because you can't have both the url and the image in the clipboard at the same time.

But anyway, fascinating little tool! And it is useful for among other things ... rule 34 content!
 :D

imm.io will delete the graphic after 30 days if it is not accessed. So as long as it is accessed once in a 30 day period it will be kept on the servers. http://imm.io/faq/

Glad you like it :-) I use it almost every day to share info.

Hmm Chris. So okay, the "quick flash upload" is def the main use case. Heh I just used it over in another thread to talk about Kingsoft writer!

So if I'm making more permanent resources, I'd guess I'd use the "more durable" method via SC captor, into Stickes, into saved files, and then if was necessary to smash them into the web for remote use, if the audience is "just me", I sometimes just make "index pages".

P.S. I can't always get it to take the screen shot. So for example it fights with Stickies and isn't grabbing the image of the sticky properly. Any thoughts?

Not sure why it is not capturing properly, I think I may need to update the capture method. I'll look into it. What Windows version are you using?

Hi Chris. I'm on Win XP.

So when I tried to capture the sticky it started to pull the windows desktop behind the sticky! (Or not at all, on other times.)

Ah. I think that is because the sticky is set ontop. For some reason it has a problem with windows that are set to ontop. I'm looking into it, thanks!

I updated the screen selection code and it should now allow you to capture ontop windows properly. It also now allows you to just copy the capture to the clipboard. You can move the selection window around and reselect if needed. Once you have selected your area you can press enter to capture and upload or right click on the selected area for more options.

Another version: 1.0.1.3. I added a button that creates a thumbnail page of all images in the history for easier viewing. They can be clicked on to view the full image.

Gave this a test and I like the very well-designed interface and history functionality.  However, I cannot make successive captures work.  I'm doing the following:

  • Start the app.  Icon in tray.  Good.
  • Press F9.  Cursor changes to crosshair.
  • Select a region.  Cursor changes again.  Right-click and choose Upload.
  • Image is uploaded, url copied to clipboard, and all is well to this point.
  • Press F9 again.  Cursor changes to crosshair as before.
  • Selecting a region does not work now.  That is, I don't see the translucent window.
  • The only way out is to press Escape or kill the process.

Tested on two W7/64 systems with the same results.

Interesting to note here.

I had the same deal as skwire.
I was taking shots of regions in Firefox.
Messing around I saw that F9 brings up this in Firefox.
With ICUP closed -see shot attached-
Closed tabs I think....
Then after a few tries, ICUP started working like it should.
I noticed when it misbehaved, I could take the first shot in Firefox and the second of the desktop and it worked. But not two consecutive shots of Firefox.
And after that it started working normally for some reason.

Ignore this post if needed, :) , I'm just rambling on with what I saw....or think I saw.

Ok I found the problem, I forgot to clear a variable :). There is a new version 1.0.1.4 should fix the bug when trying to capture back to back.  See first post for download link/page.

Updated to 1.0.1.6 beta - Added support for Pixlr. You can select an area, right click on the selected area and Open in Pixlr. You can right click on a URL in the history and edit in pixlr. Removed the left click to copy and just added Copy URL to the context menu.

Meanwhile it looks better first run here too.

From a Sticky (of a webcomic) http://i.imm.io/1ml9v.png

So bugs will be bugs but it looks better here now too.

Heh Chris I'm a bit known for my Scope Creep, so at worst tell me to go away!

But it just occurred to me there are like 3 things missing from making this the Ultra Tool for use cases like mine.

1. Option to toggle on/off posting to the web. Really, my screen capture needs are ultra simple. But they don't always involve posting to the web!

2. Toggle Capture Image vs Capture WebAddress When Posted.

This one will take a min to explain.

I do a ton of work with Tom Revell's Stickies. I capture images, paste them into stickies, draw annotations on it, then save the sticky into an image file. So not only does the initial version not leave me with a captured image, but then some "random wrong version" is the one posted.

Much faster would be if the tool captured the image, I paste it into my Sticky, annotate it, save it, and then pull your tool to "post to the web". At the end of all that, don't dump the address into my clipboard (thus wiping out whatever is there!) - Make a text file with the address on my comp. Because after all I'll want to save a note where my posted image went!

Whew! Does that sound like too much? It feels really simple. It's only about 3 more features. But for ex right now I only use exactly 1 feature out of Mouser's SC Captor. I'm a bit of a minimalist. With a bit of development fun I'd rather use your version! Efficiency and all that!

Further minor process notes to follow later if you feel like thrashing this stuff out.

Cheers,

--Tao

GO AWAY!!....  :D

It already has what you are asking for... at least the most current version does v1.0.1.9.

1. On the history/settings window there is a toggle for copying to clipboard or not.
2. If you right click on the select area you will get a Copy to Clipboard menu item.
3. Once you have your annotated image you can open the history window and drag/drop the image onto that window and it will upload to imm.io.

Might want to read the help/website next time. LOL http://icup.pen.io/

 ;)
